Happy Labor Day!

Labor Day image

Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers and is traditionally observed on the first Monday in September. It was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century and became a federal holiday in 1894.

No Labor Day waste collection, drop-off location closings

There will be no residential garbage, recycling, yard waste or bulky waste collection within the Louisville Metro Urban Services District (former Louisville city limits) on Labor Day, Monday, September 7. Collection through the week will be delayed by one day because of the holiday. To receive automatic reminders of changes due to holidays, download the Recycle Coach app at the App Store or on Google Play

Residents who rely on private waste haulers should consult those haulers about holiday collection schedules.

Also, our three staffed recycling drop-off locations, the Waste Reduction Center, and the Haz Bin hazardous waste disposal site, will be closed on Saturday, September 5 in recognition of the holiday and closed on Monday as usual. A map and complete list of the drop-off sites and regular operating hours can be found at our website.

Rest in Peace, George Hauck

George Hauck

We join many Louisvillians in remembering George Hauck, who passed away Tuesday at 100 years of age.

Hauck, known as the "Most Popular Man in Germantown-Schnitzelburg," had celebrated his 100th birthday in late May. Due to COVID-19, the party was a drive-by parade at his residence of several years, St. Joseph's Home.

"He was a legend who will be sorely missed," Councilman Mulvihill said. "He’s everything good about this world and we should all strive to follow in his giant footsteps."

In the photo above, left to right, were Katie and Councilman Mulvihill, George Hauck and Mike Morris at the 2017 Cyclouvia on Goss Avenue.

The World War II Navy veteran took over Hauck's Handy Store from his mother just after the war and operated the store until 2016.

Hauck is also known as the creator of the annual World Championship Dainty Contest. Schnitzelburg's famous street game of German origin is played with a wooden peg pointed on both ends and a long wooden stick.

Proceeds from the annual contest benefit the Little Sisters of the Poor. Hauck was a supporter of the Sisters, through the Dainty Contest and volunteering. He was honored with the St. Jeanne Jugan Award in 2017 for 65 years of volunteering at St. Joseph’s Home.
