Broad Run Park will be closed to public access from sunset to sunrise starting August 24.
Louisville, Ky. (August 17, 2020) — Beginning Monday, August 24, 2020, entrances to Broad Run Park will be gated and locked from sunset to sunrise. This new protocol further emphasizes and enforces the park’s existing hours of operation in the southernmost section of The Parklands of Floyds Fork.
“In closing off access to Broad Run Park from sunset to sunrise, our goal is to prevent overnight vandalism and property damage to Broad Run Park’s natural areas and amenities,” said David Morgan, President of The Parklands of Floyds Fork. “This extra step will help protect the investment our community made in our donor and visitor supported park.”
The nearly 4,000-acre park system in Louisville, KY includes four parks—Beckley Creek Park, Pope Lick Park, Turkey Run Park and Broad Run Park—and is open from dawn to dusk 365 days a year. There is no admission fee to enter and use the park’s amenities, including 80+ miles of trails for hiking, biking and paddling.
On Monday, August 24, 2020, all visitors to Broad Run Park should exit the park via Bardstown Road by sunset. Both the Bardstown Road and Broad Run Road entrances will be locked shortly after to prevent vehicles from accessing the park overnight.
Broad Run Park is the only area affected by this change. The rest of the park system is open from dawn to dusk, unless otherwise noted.
Throughout the pandemic, The Parklands has seen an increase in visitation, as people look to the outdoors for recreation and respite. As of August 1, 2020, the four-park system has seen more than 2.2 million visits. The annual record is 3.1 million visits in 2019.

Did you know it’s always free to adopt a Pit Bull from LMAS? Don’t shop, adopt! Fancy is a stunning 1-year-old Pit Bull/Boxer mix who despite her name, is more like the girl next door type. She’s a very friendly dog, who thinks every stranger she meets must pet her. Fancy’s also affectionate, she loves to cuddle and be held like a puppy. Fancy has great manners and knows several commands, plus she’s already housetrained. She would enjoy daily walks but running around the back yard with her favorite squeaky toy is ok, too. The playful beauty is a master at the ‘trade game’ and she’ll happily trade her toys for a treat. An approved adopter can adopt Fancy for free, thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. Fancy weighs 47lbs. She’s already spayed, microchipped and up-to-dated on vaccinations. In Fancy’s ideal home, she’d be the only fur baby getting spoiled rotten. Fancy can be tested with children by request. For more info about Fancy, email animalservicesadoption@louisvilleky.gov. Unfortunately, carjackings are up 400% this year and are occurring all over Jefferson County. In response the US Attorney’s Office announced a federal task force to combat carjackings in Louisville. Please be aware of your surroundings.
Tips to avoid carjackings:
- Always have your mobile phone handy — and charged.
- Avoid being alone in your vehicle in certain areas, such as high crime neighborhoods, isolated roads and intersections and desolate areas of parking lots.
- Be aware of your surroundings. Pay special attention to people who seem to be lurking or cars that suspiciously follow you into driveways. Call 911 and use your key fob or other car alarm if you feel a threat.
- Be wary of how carjackers lure victims. These include bumping your car, pretending to be stranded motorists or flashing their lights as if there were something wrong with your car. In each of these scenarios, you might be tempted to pull over -- only to have your car taken. Stay inside with the windows shut and the door locked and, if you feel a threat, drive to the nearest police or fire station.
- Practice safe parking. Stick to well-lit areas. If you have any doubts about where you parked after the fact, find a security guard to accompany you to your vehicle.
- Don't sit in your car with the door unlocked or the windows rolled down.
- Don’t stop at isolated ATMs, which might put you and your bank accounts as well as your car in danger.
Lastly, always remember to lock your doors and remove all valuables form your car, including firearms. Thieves often just try door handles to see if a car is unlocked. Locking your car it is the #1 thing you can do to prevent you from becoming a victim.
