Waste Collection schedule not affected by 4th of July Holiday

There will be no interruption to residential garbage, recycling, yard waste or bulky waste collection within the Louisville Metro Urban Services District (former Louisville city limits) on Friday, July 4. To receive automatic reminders of changes due to holidays, download our Recycle Coach app at the App Store or on Google Play. Residents who rely on private waste haulers should consult those haulers about holiday collection schedules. The Waste Reduction Center, our staffed recycling drop-off locations, and the Haz Bin hazardous waste disposal site, will be closed on Saturday, July 4. A map and complete list of the drop-off sites and regular operating hours can be found at our website.

Fireworks Safety

A message from our Training & Safety team: Independence Day, the Fourth of July. One of our traditions is to watch fireworks displays or shoot them off ourselves. In 2006, 9,200 fireworks-related injuries were treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms. The trend in fireworks-related injuries has been mostly up since 1996, with spikes in 2000-2001, primarily due to celebrations around welcoming new millennium. The highest injury rates were for children aged 10 to 14. 75% of all injured were male. Most fireworks injuries involve burns, but there were also contusions, lacerations and other types of injuries. Let‘s look at some safety precautions if you‘re around fireworks: Be Prepared, before you light fireworks: • Use legal fireworks, available at licensed outlets • Store fireworks out of children‘s reach • Keep pets safe indoors • Always keep water handy Be Safe, when lighting fireworks: • Only adults should light fireworks • Only use outdoors • Do not throw fireworks or hold in your hand • Protect your eyes • Light one firework at a time and move away quickly • Never relight a dud Be Responsible after you finish: • Soak used fireworks in water • Be considerate--clean up used fireworks • Keep matches and lighters away from children For more fireworks safety information visit the National Fire Protection Association. Free electric fans for older adults and disabled individuals starting July 6, 2020

LOUISVILLE, Ky (July 2, 2020) - Thanks to the generosity of local businesses, community organizations, and residents, hundreds of electric fans have been collected to provide heat relief for older adults and people with disabilities. 

The Fan Fair giveaway qualifications and guidelines are as follows:

• Person 60 years of age or older
• Or documentation verified by a physician of a disability
• Resident of Jefferson, Oldham, Henry, Shelby, Spencer, Trimble or Bullitt Counties
• Proof of address and age
• ​One fan per household
• Household must not have functional central air conditioning

Beginning Monday, July 6, qualified individuals may call one of the sites below for more information and instruction on how to apply to receive a fan.  Appointments are required in advance due to most sites remaining temporarily closed for walk-in clients in accordance with the CDC and Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness guidelines. Fan Fair is an annual event sponsored by KIPDA Area Agency on Aging and Independent Living and Louisville Metro Office for Aging & Disabled Citizens (OADC).  These organizations first joined forces in 2016 to implement a Fan Fair and Community Resource event in response to the numerous calls they received requesting heat relief. Mayor urges residents to stay vigilant in protecting themselves from COVID-19

Mayor Greg Fischer today urged residents to remain vigilant in protecting themselves and others from the COVID-19 virus as the Fourth of July holiday weekend begins.

“Independence Day is a time of celebration, tradition and holiday gathering, but we have to be smart and remember that this virus doesn’t care about our traditions or our country,” said the Mayor. “Even though we’ve reopened nearly all of our businesses, the pandemic is still with us.”

Louisville is experiencing a plateau with its COVID-19 positive case counts, but other cities across the country are starting to see a surge.

“In several areas of the country, outbreaks of COVID-19 are tied to bars and indoor gatherings,” said Dr. Sarah Moyer, Chief Health Strategist and director of the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW). “This pandemic has taught us how we’re all connected. The virus doesn’t move. People move. If you’re in a crowded setting, not socially distancing or wearing a mask, you greatly increase your chances of being exposed to COVID-19.”...To read more.

Fireworks safety for pets: Fireworks and pets don’t mix! While many look forward to the traditional celebratory sights and sounds of fireworks in the sky, it can be a scary experience for pets. The loud noises associated with the 4th of July often result in frightened pets running off, and a spike in stray animals entering local animal shelters. The best way to keep your pets safe this 4th of July weekend is to leave them at home while you enjoy the festivities. Public Service Announcement: The LMAS Shelter is open for citizens needing to purchase or renew pet licensing  or pay a violation. There will be a grace period for pet owners who cannot show proof their pet’s rabies vaccination is up-to-date.  Citizens can also visit the LMAS Shelter for adoptions, lost and found services, and donations during normal business hours, which are Monday-Saturday from 12-6pm. Crime Mapping

First Division

Major Andy McClinton Andrew McClinton began his career in law enforcement on January 22, 2001 with the former Louisville Division of Police (LPD). As a patrol officer, he served in the former Sixth District (LPD) and First Division. As a detective, he served in the First Division Flex Platoon and in the Criminal Intelligence Unit. He was also a member of the Dignitary Protection Team for three (3) years. After being promoted to Sergeant in 2008, he served in the First Division, Robbery Unit, Professional Standards Unit and the Public Integrity Unit. In 2016, he was promoted to Lieutenant and worked in the Third Division and Administrative Services.  In 2017, McClinton was promoted to Major and commanded the Administrative Services Division. Major McClinton holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Political Science from Hanover College. He is a graduate of the Academy of Police Supervision at Eastern Kentucky University and the 136th Session of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officer’s Course at the University of Louisville. Major McClinton is married with two (2) children.

Second Division

Major Ryan Bates Bates began his law enforcement career in August 1997 with the Louisville Division of Police. He served in the former Second, Fourth, and Sixth Districts. He was also a member of the Street Crimes Unit and the Gang Squad. After merger, Bates served as a patrol officer in the First Division. He was promoted to sergeant in August 2005. He served as a sergeant in the Second Division where he supervised the mid-watch platoon, FLEX Unit, and Detectives Unit. In 2012, Bates was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Fourth Division. He also served in the Second Division, where he supervised the mid-watch platoon and Division Resource Officers (DROs).   After being promoted to the rank of major, Bates commanded the Fourth Division. Major Bates served on the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team for 14 years. He served on the SWAT Team as an officer, sergeant, and lieutenant. He was appointed as the Assistant Commander in 2012 and Commander in 2015. Bates has also served on two (2) task forces which were created to address violent crime in the community. Major Bates is a graduate of Xavier University and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Business. He is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officers Course.

Fourth Division

Major Tim Burkett Major Tim Burkett began his career with the former Louisville Division of Police (LPD) in 1999 . He was a patrol officer and division detective in the former Fourth District. Additionally, he was a Sex Crimes detective and served on the Dignitary Protection Team (DPT). In 2007, Burkett was promoted to sergeant where he was a patrol sergeant and a division detective sergeant in the Eighth Division. In 2010, Burkett was promoted to lieutenant and commanded the Property Room. He also served as a Special Events lieutenant in the Special Operations Division. While in the Special Events Unit, he was responsible for planning and operating medium to large scale special events. He has been part of the command group for the PGA Championship, the Ironman Triathlon, Thunder over Louisville, the National Rifle Association (NRA) National Convention and many other events. He has been the lead on numerous events including marathons, parades, Muhammad Ali's Memorial Service and the world renowned Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby. After being promoted to major, Burkett commanded the Special Operations Division Major Burkett holds a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice with a cognate in Public Administration. He was a Dean's Scholar graduate of the University of Louisville's Southern Police Institute Administrative Officers Course. He is a certified instructor with the Commonwealth of Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training
