CLEANING YOUR CELL PHONE DURING THE COVID-19 OUTBREAK

PEXELS PHONE

With the outbreak of COVID-19, there has been much emphasis placed on preventive actions, such as frequent handwashing, social distancing, staying home and cleaning commonly touched surfaces often.

Numerous studies have found that our cellphones can be carriers of microbial life forms, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to clean commonly touched surfaces. One type of surface that we touch frequently is our phone touch screen. Phone touch screens can usually be cleaned using disinfecting wipes, but check with the maker of your phone first. The frequency of cleaning will vary depending on your habits and the likelihood of exposure.

“Touch screens on our devices are an often-overlooked source of microbes that can be brought into our personal space,” said Dr. David Westenberg, associate professor of biological sciences at Missouri University of Science and Technology.

While many of these are harmless, according to Westenberg, there are also disease-causing organisms like the coronavirus that can survive on surfaces long enough to be transmitted to you or another person.

According to Professor Donald Schaffner, a specialist in food science at Rutgers University, the most likely way that your device would become contaminated with high levels of the virus is for someone to sneeze or cough near it. Microscopic droplets containing the virus could then settle on the phone, he explained. So, if you have been near anyone who is coughing or sneezing, it would be a good idea to clean your phone.

Westenberg recommends cleaning your cell phone on a regular basis, especially during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Exercising During Quarantine

dog workout

Exercise is a great stress reliever and a good way to keep your immune system in excellent shape.

Besides the health benefits, it’s also good to stay active to ward off going stir crazy from being cooped up for an extended period of time, like eight weeks of isolation due to the current COVID-19 pandemic!

Alexandra Ellis, creator of AE Wellness and host of The Body Nerd Show, says there’s a lot you can do at home that requires no equipment.

“Focus on the basics such as planks, pushups, squats, leg lifts, or bicycles and burpees for an easy workout that will build strength and get your heart rate up. My favorite way to build a workout is to do 4 rounds of 5 exercises for 45 seconds of work, followed by 15 seconds of rest,” Ellis said.

“Choose exercises that target different areas of your body and you’ll have a full-body workout in less than 20 minutes,” she said.

For people looking for more guidance during their home exercise, there are plenty of tutorials available online, whether on YouTube or other websites.

One such example is the online yoga website EkhartYoga.com, which is offering free gentle yoga and meditation classes online to people during the outbreak to help counteract the escalation of stress and anxiety that comes with it.

We all know the stress of being in isolation during this worldwide pandemic. Esther Ekhart, the owner and a yoga teacher, said. “While, thankfully, the majority of us aren’t in physical danger, we can’t fail to escape the news, which in itself can cause worry and anxiety.

Exercise to stay healthy, physically and mentally, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Have your kids and pets join in to make it a fun family activity.
