Dear JCPS Families,
We promised to keep you informed about your child’s education during the ongoing school closure. Here are some updates and pieces of information that might be helpful as your child begins remote learning through Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) on Tuesday, April 7th.
Chromebooks
Only families in the Free and Reduced Lunch program or who have a student in the Exceptional Child Education (ECE) program are eligible to request a Chromebook computer from JCPS to use during Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI). Special considerations will be made for English language learners and our homeless families. Families who have already submitted a request online or by phone do not need to take any additional steps. JCPS will be contacting you.
Chromebook Request - Deadline Extension
Because of the high volume of calls we received Monday and Tuesday, we are extending the deadline for eligible families to request a computer until Thursday at 5 p.m. The JCPS help line (313-HELP) will be open from 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday for eligible families who have not already submitted a request online or by phone to ask for a Chromebook. Please DO NOT CALL the help line if your child is not in the Free and Reduced Lunch program or in the ECE program. We ask for your patience when calling the help line. If you don’t get through the first time, please call back.
Emergency Food Sites Schedule
The Emergency Food sites are open Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Children can receive two breakfast and two lunch meals on Monday and Wednesday and one of each on Friday.
NTI Information
Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) begins April 7th for your child. JCPS’ NTI web page is the most important place for you and your child to get lessons and other information from schools and teachers. There is a video on how to navigate this page as well as other educational materials. We suggest you check out this page with your child before their required school work resumes on April 7th.
Hard Copies of Educational Material Available at Food Sites
Families who don’t have a computer or access to the internet can pick up hard copies of new Choice Boards for every grade level at the Emergency Food sites. These educational activities and exercises could be used by students as a part of required course work developed by their teacher(s). Students should be in communication with their teacher(s) next week.
Additional Education Options
- Kentucky Educational Television (KET) is now devoting its entire daytime schedule to on-air learning. Lessons for every grade level are available on KET’s main channel. You can find the schedule here.
- University of Louisville student athletes are reading books for JCPS’ young students. The videos are called Tuesday Storytime and can be found on UofL Athletics’ Facebook page and Twitter feed. This week’s reader is basketball player Keith Oddo.
Superintendent and Mayor News Conference
JCPS Superintendent Marty Pollio and Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer are scheduled to have an online news conference Thursday at 11 a.m. to discuss internet access for ECE students during NTI and ways the community can help. The news conference will be live streamed at www.youtube.com/jcpsweb.
These are difficult and unusual times. We thank you for your kind comments, encouragement, patience and understanding as, together, we figure out the best ways to continue educating every JCPS student.
COVID-19
What is it?
Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new respiratory virus that has the potential to cause serious illness and pneumonia in some people.
How is it spread?
- Through the air by coughing and sneezing
- Through close personal contact, touching, shaking hands
- By touching an object or surface with the virus on it, then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes
What are the symptoms?
The diseases can be mild or, in some cases, serious enough to require hospitalization. The symptoms of this respiratory disease mainly include:
- Fever
- Cough
- Shortness of breath
How is it prevented?
Prevention is similar to that of other respiratory diseases, including the flu:
- Wash your hands frequently
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
- Avoid contact with sick people
- Stay home while you are sick; avoid others
- Cover your mouth/nose with a tissue or sleeve when you cough or sneeze
Symptoms may first appear 2 to 14 days after exposure.
When to seek medical advice and evaluation:
If you have symptoms like cough, fever, or other respiratory problems, call your healthcare provider. Isolate yourself and wear a mask before leaving the house. Do not go to the emergency room. Emergency rooms need to be able to serve those with the most critical needs.
CALL your healthcare provider if you feel you have COVID-19 and follow their advice.

Spearheaded by Public Works engineer, Steve Kurowsky, the Rockford Lane new sidewalk project is now complete thanks to a partnership between Public Works Transportation & Engineering Division, and District 1 Councilwoman Jessica Green, who had this to say about the project, “I am so excited about the Rockford lane sidewalk improvement project. I am grateful to all of the city and state employees who have worked so hard on this project. This project will improve the quality of life and the safety for residents in and around this area.”
The project connects the sidewalk along the north side of Rockford Lane from just west of Dover Road to Dover Road intersection. This helps make the pedestrian connection to Western High School (which is just east of the project site). • Improved and relocated 1 TARC bus stop location • Improved the drainage along the project corridor by filling in and piping the big open ditch. • Had to get a KYTC Permit because Rockford Lane is a state-maintained roadway. • A floodplain permit had to be obtained from MAD as the project limits were just inside MSD’s floodplain.
