Welcome: Rain on Our Parade

Over the last two weeks I have been in France, half the time in Paris on either side of a trip to the Dordogne region in the country’s southwest.  Paris is my favorite city and it inspires me in so many ways, including city services and systems.  Originally, I thought I would come home and write in this space about Paris’s street cleaning operation – its separate set of underground water pipes used to flush the gutters and its army of workers dressed in green and holding a broom or a water hose to help the debris along; fascinating stuff! – but instead I have to write about the coronavirus so that you and my colleagues and co-workers know that you don’t have to be afraid of me.  Upon my return home from abroad I reached out to Drs. Sarah Moyer and Lori Caloia of the Department of Public Health & Wellness to discuss my recent travel and risk.  After interviewing me they concluded, “At this time (Tue 3/10/2020 12:37 PM), the CDC states that China, Italy, Iran, and South Korea are the only recommended locations from which travelers should self-monitor / self-quarantine x 14 days.  Your recent travel itinerary did not take you to one of these higher risk areas.  You would be considered someone at low risk of COVID-19 and therefore do not require these extra measures.  You do not pose any risk to any coworkers and may continue working without that concern.”  So, if you see me on the street or at a District 8 event* over the next two weeks it is okay to stop me and tell me about your small cell antenna problem.  (That is a joke; there is more on small cells in the Streets Report below).  In all seriousness, though, clearly the world is dealing with an evolving public health situation and seemingly every aspect of our daily lives is being touched by it.  We just got word that the St. Patrick’s Day Parade has been postponed to a future date uncertain.  Public Health & Wellness advises persons over 60 or having a chronic medical condition to not attend any events until further notice.  We must go on living but do so with caution.  The administration has created a resource for What You Need to Know About COVID-19 here.  I support our mayor, his public health and leadership teams and I ask everyone to do the same.  Now do you believe we’re all in this together?
