| Dear Neighbor,
While there is still much we don't know about the new coronavirus (COVID-19) and its future in our community and the broader impact here in the United States, you should know that Louisville Metro is working on a plan to address this virus and its spread in our community.
The Mayor and his counterparts in the 82 small cities in Jefferson County have been working with public and private hospitals and other healthcare providers to make sure resources and procedures are in place when an infected person comes or returns to Louisville.
Please know that all of these organizations, together with Dr. Sarah Moyer, the Louisville Metro Public Health and Wellness Director, are working together on this situation.
I sat down with Dr. Moyer last week and we discussed some important things I wanted to share with you and your family:
1) Louisville has handled public health situations well before (remember the Hepatitis A outbreak, H1N1 scare, and HIV outbreak in Indiana over the past few years). Louisville Metro was instrumental in helping stem those tides.
2) Louisville citizens are at much greater risk (right now) from seasonal flu than from COVID-19. Louisville has 7,800+ confirmed flu cases and 8 deaths so far this year.
3) The best defense is frequent (and more frequent) 20-second hand washing. Especially before and after eating, using the restroom, or interacting with many people. Also, refrain from touching your face as much as possible.
Please do what you can to keep your family safe. There is certainly reason to be concerned about this new virus, especially given the lack of our understanding of it and little guidance for what its trajectory may be.
Don't hesitate to reach out to our office or the Health Department if you have additional questions or concerns.
Thank you,
Brent T. Ackerson 26th District Councilman

The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness is offering free radon test kits while supplies last.
You can request a kit by calling 574-6650 or visiting https://louisvilleky.gov/government/health-wellness/radon.
Radon is a gas that you cannot smell, taste or see. It forms naturally when uranium, radium and thorium break down in rocks, soil and groundwater. People can be exposed to radon primarily from breathing radon in air that comes in through cracks and gaps in homes and other buildings. Radon can cause lung cancer through prolonged exposure. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, behind smoking, and the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, causing between 15,000 and 22,000 lung cancer deaths each year.
The entire state of Kentucky is at high risk for radon exposure with about 40 percent of homes estimated to have unsafe levels. The only way to know if radon exists at dangerous levels in your home is to test for it.
