Louisville Parks and Recreation is offering free lifeguard training to those who are willing to work at two Metro-owned outdoor pools and the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center for the summer 2020 season. The next training class begins Sunday, March 1, at Mary T., located at 201 Reservoir Avenue near the Crescent Hill Reservoir within Crescent Hill Park. Lifeguards must be 16 years of age and be able to fulfill prerequisites relating to swimming, diving, and water treading skills prior to successful completion of the course. Training for lifeguards not employed by Louisville Parks and Recreation is available for $200/per person. For more information, call 502-897-9949. The department is looking for at least 15 lifeguards for the upcoming season at Mary T. and the two outdoor pools that will be open this summer, Sun Valley in southwest Louisville and Algonquin in west Louisville. “Becoming a lifeguard is a great way to meet new people, stay fit, and help out in the community,” said Margaret Brosko, Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation. “We’re looking for candidates who want to have fun, work hard, and carry a positive attitude.” Starting pay for lifeguards is $10.50 per hour. In addition, Louisville Parks and Recreation is also seeking swim instructors with the opportunity for more pay.  Mayor Greg Fischer, Louisville Metro Government agencies, Municipal Complete Count Committee members and other community partners are joining together to declare March 1 - 7 Census Awareness Week in Louisville. Events taking place across the city encourage residents to learn more about what’s at stake in the 2020 Census and to take action in their communities to help ensure a complete and accurate count. The Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District (District) proposes to issue a construction permit to Hexion Inc. (formaldehyde and phenolic resin manufacturing plant), 6200 Camp Ground Road, in accordance with Regulation 2.03. This permit is being issued to revise compliance demonstration methods for Hexion’s Wastewater Treatment Plant. The Recuperative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) is no longer needed as a permitted control to have compliant toxics emissions based on stack testing performed on August 28, 2019. The 30-day public comment period starts on February 13, 2020 and ends on March 16, 2020. A public hearing may be scheduled if the District determines that there are germane, unresolved issues or substantial public interest, in accordance with Regulation 2.07.

Do you love parks and want to take a bigger role in your community? Do you believe in taking care of them as you would your own backyard? Louisville Parks and Recreation is seeking 10 Volunteer Ambassadors willing to keep an eye out on their neighborhood parks, help guide volunteer projects and make suggestions for park improvements.
“We are going to rely on our Volunteer Ambassadors to be our eyes and ears in the field,” said Dana Kasler, Director of Parks and Recreation. “They are going to play a pivotal role in engaging the public and strengthening our park system.”
Volunteer Ambassadors must be at least 18 years of age, agree to submit an online application and complete a training led by Louisville Parks and Recreation. The department is hoping Ambassadors will commit to serving one year at a selected park, averaging approximately 1 ½ hours of service work per week.

Louisville Parks and Recreation is partnering with Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Reviving Baseball In Inner Cities (RBI) program to increase interest and participation in the game of baseball and softball as well as to encourage academic participation and the value of teamwork. As a budget cutting move, and to reduce the number of trucks operating in low-demand months, Louisville Metro Solid Waste Management will be suspending the curbside collection of yard waste in the Urban Service District (USD) which began January 20 through March 27, 2020.
Yard waste will be collected on your normal day BY REQUEST ONLY. Call 311 or 574-5000 to request yard waste collection. Regular yard waste collection will resume the week of March 30. (Residents with private waste haulers should contact their company about yard waste collection.)

City garbage carts and recycling carts are built to last, but our relationship with them is a two-way street! Here are some tips for showing your carts some love:
1. Don't overload. A full cart should weigh less than 200 lbs. Heavy carts are more likely to break when emptied. Set out weekly so it doesn't get too full. Lids should be able to completely close. If your garbage cart consistently overflows, try recycling or purchase an additional cart.
2. Bring it in. Carts are often damaged or stolen if left out after collection. Bring it in by 4PM the day after collection. It should be stored away from the street or alley, inside a fence, or against a structure. Leaving your cart out in an alley means more litter, more damage, and more chance of it getting stolen.
3. Keep it clean. Simply rinse your cart with soap and water from time to time. There are businesses that will come pressure wash your cart (for a fee).
4. Have it repaired. If your cart gets damaged, contact Metro311 to request a free repair. If it's beyond fixing, we'll replace it instead. Then repeat tips 1, 2, and 3!

The U.S. Census will help determine Louisville's future for the next 10 year — representation in government, the allocation of federal resources affecting communities and families, education funding, and much more.
Mayor Greg Fischer and the Louisville Municipal Complete Count Committee are working to help ensure a complete and proper count of all Louisville residents, and are seeking the community's help in getting out the word. - March 16-24 – A reminder letter.
- March 26-April 3 – A reminder postcard. (if you haven’t responded yet)

- April 20-27 – A final reminder postcard before the Census follows up in person.
Where are people counted?
- Count people at their usual residence, which is the place where they live and sleep most of the time.
- People in certain types of group facilities on Census Day are counted at the group facility.
- People who do not have a usual residence, or who cannot determine a usual residence, are counted where they are on Census Day.
