Officer Lenert Elzy raising money for new gym floor at California Community Center
On West St. Catherine Street sits a cherished community center. It's a special place for Officer Lenert Elzy, who spent his childhood there.
"I loved coming here on a daily basis. Me and my friends would literally talk about what time we would meet up, every day," he said of the California Community Center.
When Elzy became an LMPD officer and began patrolling the same neighborhood where he grew up, he continued to visit the center, even playing basketball there. That's when he began to notice the wear and tear.

While working on Jefferson Hill, Public Works’ West District Roads Division, Dave Williamson and Robert Jones (pictured L-R) were stopped by an elderly woman asking for directions. To help her, Mr. Jones let the elderly woman follow him out to the expressway, as he felt she would not be able to follow his directions. Once getting to the Gene Snyder freeway the woman continued to follow him back to the West District. Once there and after speaking with her again, he found out she was 93 years old and could not find her way back to the Newburg area, where she lives. After finishing his workday, Mr. Jones then volunteered to let her follow him; literally going miles out of his way to ensure she arrived home safely.
Director Burns extends her appreciation to West District Roads Division, Senior Equipment Operator Dave Williamson and Crew Leader Robert Jones for going above and beyond their responsibilities, their actions, especially those of Mr. Jones speak to the character of the great people of Public Works.
