Want to Plant a Tree? Hurry to Reserve Now!

trees

TreesLouisville is providing 560 free trees to residents through Community Canopy, an Arbor Day Foundation program that helps conserve energy and reduce energy bills through strategic tree planting. This is the third round of the program which has delivered nearly 2500 free trees to Louisville residents in the past year.

Louisville residents can reserve their free trees at www.arborday.org/treeslouisville. An online tool helps customers estimate the annual energy savings that will result from planting trees in the most strategic location near their homes or businesses. Available species are blackgum, sycamore, tulip poplar, bald cypress, and swamp white oak. Residents have the option to reserve a 3-gallon container tree to be picked up at Portland Presbyterian on March 4, 2020 or have a 1-gallon container tree shipped to their home.

“This program improves our community tree canopy and can help residents save money on their energy bills in addition to providing various ecosystem benefits,” said Cindi Sullivan, Executive Director of TreesLouisville.

The Community Canopy online tool was created by the Arbor Day Foundation and the Davey Institute, a division of the Davey Tree Expert Co., and uses peer-reviewed scientific research from the USDA Forest Service’s i-Tree software to calculate estimated ecosystem benefits. In addition to providing approximate energy savings, the tool also estimates the trees’ other benefits, including cleaner air, reduced carbon dioxide emissions and improved stormwater management.

Urban Service District Yard Waste Suspended Until March 27 (Requests Only)

yard waste

As a budget cutting move, and to reduce the number of trucks operating in low-demand months, Louisville Metro Solid Waste Management will be suspending the curbside collection of yard waste in the Urban Service District (USD) beginning from January 20 through March 27, 2020

Yard waste will be collected on your normal day BY REQUEST ONLY. Call 311 or 574-5000 to request yard waste collection. Regular yard waste collection will resume the week of March 30. (Residents with private waste haulers should contact their company about yard waste collection.)

Know Waste: Compostable Products

styro

Compostable products like takeout containers, cups, plates, and forks may look and feel like plastic, but are made from plants such as corn or sugarcane. From a disposal point of view, these items are not as "eco-friendly" as they sound if you don't have a way to compost them in an industrial composting system. They won't break down easily (if at all) in a backyard compost pile, but if you try it, consider helping the process along by cutting the item into small pieces first. These products should NOT be placed in the recycling bin. If you don’t have a way to compost, into the garbage they must go. But, like their plastic counterparts, even compostable containers don't break down in any reasonable amount of time in a landfill. Remember, it’s best to REDUCE! Try to avoid single-use items, no matter what they're made from!

Plastic Recycling at Kroger

plastic

Join Kroger in making a difference with plastic recycling. Every day, Kroger recycles tons of plastic waste in stores but with your help, they can do more.

Now you can recycle plastic bags (grocery, retail, food storage, dry cleaning, newspaper bags), outer package wrapping, plastic cereal box liners and shipping materials. Check out the above graphic for more information (or view it here) and thanks for doing your part!

Louisville Parks & Recreation Seeking User Feedback to Make Improvements

metro

Louisville Parks and Recreation will be distributing a customer satisfaction survey to its community centers and facilities this winter - and conduct them at outdoor events and parks throughout the city this spring and summer – with the goal of providing better customer service and satisfaction to residents.

“We hope that everyone who has the opportunity to weigh in on what we can do better and will do so,” said Dana Kasler, Director of Louisville Parks and Recreation. “Even in these lean budget times, we are still committed to improving, and public feedback is essential for us to get better.”

Paper surveys will be distributed at four Louisville Parks and Recreation facilities beginning today. The survey period will last one month at the following facilities: Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center, Beechmont Community Center, Southwick Community Center and Berrytown Community Center.

After one month, the surveys will be collected at the above sites and then new surveys will be distributed at four additional sites. The process will continue at various sites, parks and events through late summer 2020. The survey consists of 10 questions and can easily be completed within a few minutes. Parks and Recreation is seeking feedback from diverse park and recreation facility users of all ages and backgrounds.

Survey results will be made public in late 2020. In order to measure improvement, the survey process will be repeated in 2021.

“This will not be a one-time deal,” Kasler said. “We are stressing a process of continuous improvement with Louisville Parks and Recreation. The best way to do that is to always engage the public to ensure their concerns, questions, and dreams have been heard and addressed.”

The Louisville Parks and Recreation Survey can also be found online at bestparksever.com or here. However, Kasler said he is hoping that park users opt to fill  out the surveys in person at the facilities and parks they use most frequently for better, more accurate data.

PAINT in Your Neighborhood

art

Parkland Residents, Owners and Friends,

Hi! We are connecting with you because of your role in the Parkland neighborhood. There is an upcoming opportunity to bring art to the community, and we would love for you to be involved!

We are looking to bring art to both the Parkland and California. We will be doing everything we can to ensure the process of creating and installing the art is community-driven and neighborhood-focused. The work will be guided by our PAINT process, and this is where we hope YOU will join!

We are seeking individuals like you across the Parkland community to be a part of an advisory group that will choose the artist and the artwork. Okay, but what would that mean for you? As a member of the advisory group, we ask that you attend a public workshop on Saturday, February 8 from 12:30-2pm. This event is open to all community members, and artists across Louisville will be encouraged to attend.

Following the public workshop there will be a few more steps needed from the advisory committee. This would be to select 5 artists to submit proposals and then choose a final and the installation will begin. We would also ensure that the community has chances to be a part of creating this art. In total, this would be about a 5-hour time commitment.

If this is not you but someone else in your organization or group that would be good, please refer them to me. I am also willing to talk more about this either in person or over the phone 502-386-4903.
