Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays to you and your family! Metro offices will be closed on Wednesday, December 25 and Wednesday, January 1. The eNews is taking a break, too. The next edition will be published on Thursday, January 9.

Garbage, Recycling & Yard Waste Schedule

Metro seal

Solid waste collection services will be altered under the following schedule for the Christmas and New Year’s holiday weeks. Please note that this is a change from previously-announced schedules, due to a modification Metro Council and the Mayor’s Office made earlier this month.

Garbage/yard waste/recycling:

There will be no residential garbage, yard waste or recycling collection on Wednesday, December 25 and Wednesday, January 1 in the Urban Service District (former Louisville city limits). Residents who normally have garbage/yard waste/recycling collection on Wednesday will have service instead on Thursday, December 26 and Thursday, January 2. The Thursday and Friday schedule will also be delayed by one day.

Collections in St. Matthews will not occur on Wednesday, December 25 and Wednesday, January 1 and service will be delayed one day for the rest of the week.

Residents normally serviced by private waste haulers should check with those companies for holiday collection schedules.

Staffed Recycling Centers:

The full-service recycling locations, along with the Waste Reduction Center and Haz Bin, will be closed Wednesday, December 25 and Wednesday, January 1.

  • East District Public Works Yard, 595 N. Hubbards Lane
  • Southwest Government Center, 7219 Dixie Highway
  • Central Government Center, 7201 Outer Loop
  • Waste Reduction Center, 636 Meriwether Avenue
  • Haz Bin Hazardous Waste Facility, 7501 Grade Lane

Christmas Trees & Loose Leaves Drop-Off and Collection

Christmas tree

Seasonal Christmas tree drop-off will also include leaves this year. Starting December 26, drop-off sites will be available for all Louisville/Jefferson County residents at four locations. The Hubbards Lane site will also instantly recycle Christmas trees into mulch that will be offered back to citizens for home use. Those wishing to receive mulch must bring an appropriate container in which to carry it. All lights and ornaments should be removed from trees before they are set out or dropped off. Residents may also drop off loose leaves. Containers used to bring leaves to the drop-off sites must be disposed of off-site by residents.

DROP OFF LOCATIONS

Tuesday-Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Waste Reduction Center will close at 3 p.m. on Saturdays

December 26 - January 31, all locations will be closed on Wednesday, January 1.

  • East District Recycling Center, 595 N. Hubbards Lane
  • Public Works Yard, 10500 Lower River Road (enter from Bethany Lane)
  • Shawnee Park, 4501 W. Broadway (by Little League baseball field in rear of park)
  • Waste Reduction Center, 636 Meriwether Avenue

Metro Public Works will also provide curbside pickup of Christmas trees within the Urban Service District (the old City of Louisville boundaries) after the holiday. Beginning Wednesday, December 26, residents with curbside yard waste pickup may set their Christmas trees and greenery out on their regular collection day. Trees must not be in plastic bags, and all decorations must be removed. Residents normally serviced by private waste haulers should check with those companies to see whether and when tree pickup is available.

Yard Waste Suspended January – March

yard waste suspended

As a budget cutting move, and to reduce the number of trucks operating in low-demand months, Louisville Metro Solid Waste Management will be suspending the curbside collection of yard waste in the Urban Service District (USD) beginning on January 21 through mid-March 2020. While individuals may request collection as needed during this time through MetroCall at 574-5000, please plan to set out your yard waste – including Christmas trees – BEFORE January 21. The last day for regular D9 yard waste collection is Friday, January 17, 2020.

Turn on the Lights!

streetlight

The longest night of the year is this weekend and it’s another good time to turn on the lights in D9.  Since Daylight Saving Time ended, we have been on a mission to report streetlights that aren’t working.  We know of more than thirty lights that have been reported to LG&E in the last few weeks.

But we know there are more.  Take a look around your street and alley, and other areas you frequent, and report lights that need repair.  Streetlight outages are reported directly to LG&E. You can report them online at https://lge-ku.com/outages/report/streetlight, or you can contact my office to report them at 574-1109 or email Bill Hollander. If you email my office, please include the nearest address and description of the issue. Repairs are made by LG&E within seven days. If the repair hasn’t occurred within seven days, please contact me, since there might be a larger electric issue to report for the light.

One more thing. LMPD advises everyone to illuminate their property at night. Leave outside lights on, check lights regularly and replace burnt out bulbs.  We can make our neighborhoods safer by turning on the lights!

Payne & Clifton Work Scheduled

Clifton & Payne

Work is getting underway on a reconfiguration of the Payne Street and South Clifton Avenue intersection to make it safer for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicle traffic.  The plan is to remove bump outs on the south side of Payne and South Clifton, with the first part of the project, on the east side of Clifton, starting immediately and the work on the west side of Clifton to be completed next year.  The east side work in being funded by Louisville Metro, including District 9 funds. The west side work will be done in conjunction with construction work at Nazareth Home Clifton.

The goal of the project is to also add new stop signs and cross walks to improve safety.

Please drive carefully in the area!

Party Change Deadline - December 31

voter registration change

Kentucky voters who wish to vote in another party's primary in the May 19, 2020 Primary Election must change their registration no later than Dec. 31, 2019.

Voters can change or update their registration at Kentucky's one-stop online voter portal, GoVoteKY.com.

Under Kentucky law, to be qualified to vote in a partisan Primary Election, a voter must have been a member of that party on Dec. 31 of the prior year or a new voter who has not changed their affiliation. Voters who change party affiliation after the Dec. 31 deadline are not eligible to vote in partisan races in the Primary Election.

Voters can verify their current registration status at GoVoteKY.com. To change party affiliation, voters may make the change on the online portal, or complete a voter registration card and return it to their county clerk. Registration forms are available at county clerks' offices.

Registration forms submitted by mail, in person, or electronically must be received by the County Clerk by Dec. 31. The Jefferson County Clerk’s Election Center is at 701 W Ormsby Ave #301.

Butchertown, Nulu & Phoenix Hill Plan

In anticipation of next year’s Neighborhood Plan that includes Butchertown, Nulu and Phoenix Hill, a website has been created at bpnplan.com. Organizers have asked neighbors to participate in several ways:

  1. Take the survey (it's your chance to share your thoughts and ideas for the future of your neighborhood).
  2. Volunteer to be an ambassador (you will be asked to participate in organizing events, undertake local research and contribute to the activities).
  3. Participate (future meetings will be open to everyone and there will be several forums, community walks and bike rides, and other events for neighborhood folks).

Representatives from Metro’s Office of Advanced Planning will come to January's Butchertown Neighborhood Association meeting (details TBA on the BNA Facebook Page) to explain the plan, take questions and encourage everyone to get involved.

2019 Good Neighbor Award Recipients

Good Neighbor Award Recipients

The Frankfort Avenue Business Association (FABA) announced the recipients of the 2019 Good Neighbor Awards on Saturday, December 7th during the Olde Tyme Christmas Celebration.

The 2019 Good Neighbor Award (Business), given to a business or organization that is extremely involved in the local community, is being presented to Crescent Hill United Methodist Church.  CHUMC goes above and beyond in their involvement with the community and the neighborhood it serves.  Church members have been involved in the Frankfort Avenue Easter Parade since its inception, provide games and a concert during the annual 4th of July celebration, collect items for The Forgotten Louisville, host trivia nights, hold an annual Pancake Day, provide dog treats for those out walking their dogs in the neighborhood, and many other things!  They also are always willing to offer use of their parking lot for community events such as a farmer’s market, trunk or treat, and this year as the pickup location for the horse and carriage rides during Olde Tyme Christmas.  They go beyond serving just their members and serve the community as a whole, and for that FABA believed they deserve this year’s Good Neighbor Award.

The Good Neighbor Award (Individual) is given to an individual recognized for their work to improve the quality of life in the community. This year, the Good Neighbor award is presented to Andrei Moldoveanu.  Andrei owns Modern Family Dentistry on Frankfort Avenue, and also currently serves as a FABA board member.  He has always stepped into whatever role necessary to ensure the longevity and success of the association, including serving as President and Membership Chair.  Moreover, he is an incredibly nice guy who goes the extra mile to ensure that everyone feels welcome on The Avenue.

I was happy to join CHUMC Pastor Rev. Craig Tuck, FABA President Laurie Dobbins O'Neil, Andrei Moldoveanu and 5-0 Lou owner Terri Ross (winner of the best decorated business award) at the presentation. Congratulations to all!

Volunteers Needed for the 2019 Tax Season

tax season

For the past several years, the District 9 office has hosted a tax preparation site at United Crescent Hill Ministries (UCHM), offering free tax preparation to individuals and families under a certain income bracket. Each year the site depends on volunteers to help prepare taxes and greet clients. We have a few dedicated volunteers who help us out every year, but we need more! We hope you’ll consider joining the team!

If you are interested in volunteering for the 2019 tax season (January-April 2020), please email volunteer@labcservices.org. Make sure you indicate you would like to volunteer at the UCHM site. Volunteer trainings will be scheduled. Volunteers are needed to help prepare taxes AND greet clients. If interested in volunteering, please sign up by completing this Volunteer Application.

Sustainability Story: Packaging from Online Shopping

Packaging

The common practice of online shopping means we have a lot of extra waste at home. From bubble wrap to cardboard to padded envelopes and air pillows, the list goes on. The best thing to do is reuse the items - refill the boxes, pack fragile items with bubble wrap or air pillows, mail something else in the envelopes, or use items for craft projects. (Or you can always donate to someone else to reuse.) But if you find yourself needing to dispose of them, here's some useful information from Metro Public Works:

Cardboard Boxes

Please recycle your cardboard! It is very important that you flatten the boxes to conserve space in your own recycling bin or in our recycling dumpsters around town. Don't put them out for Large Item Collection ("junk") because they won't get recycled.

Bubble Wrap, Air Pillows

These can be recycled with plastic bags at participating retail stores. Keep them out of your home recycling containers and drop off recycling dumpsters.

Padded Envelopes

To know what to do with these, you have to know what they're made of. Some envelopes have paper surrounding bubble wrap. These cannot be recycled since they are made of a mix of materials. Some are all plastic and can go with the bubble wrap (see above). If the padding is made of all paper, the envelope can go in your home recycling containers or drop off recycling dumpsters.

Styrofoam

Large blocks of Styrofoam can be recycled at Foam Fabricators, 950 Progress Blvd, New Albany, IN. They must be clean and free of tape and stickers. They do not accept any other form of Styrofoam. And Styrofoam is NOT accepted in curbside recycling or drop off recycling dumpsters.

We’d like to feature your sustainability story - a resident or business doing good things for the environment.  Riding the bus, bicycling, walking, gardening and more - our eNews will feature practices which can benefit all of us.  Send your story to Bill Hollander or Kyle Ethridge
