The 43rd Annual Old Louisville Holiday Home Tour

The 43rd Annual Old Louisville Holiday Home Tour will take place Saturday, December 7 and Sunday, December 8 from noon to 6:00 p.m. Each year it attracts thousands of visitors to Old Louisville to experience “One of the Great Places in America,” as named by the American Planning Association. 

A one-of-a-kind historic preservation district boasting the largest contiguous collection of Victorian architecture in the United States, Old Louisville is anything but “old.” This year’s tour brings the past into the present, showcasing several homes that were, at one point, run-down or even condemned, but are now revived and alive after loving restorations. Many of the homes and historical buildings on the 2019 Holiday Home Tour are true mansions, one of which is located on the iconic St. James Court. The tour also highlights the architectural diversity of the neighborhood by featuring a beautifully renovated 800 square-foot home that was formerly an artist’s studio. 

”For 43 years, Old Louisville has opened its doors during the holiday season with a festive and welcoming spirit," said Susan Coleman Layman, Old Louisville Holiday Home Tour Chair. "I invite you to see for yourself how our historic neighborhood blends Yuletides past with today’s urban vitality during this year’s Old Louisville Holiday Home Tour, a beloved community tradition,” concluded Layman.  

There is something for everyone during the Holiday Home Tour! Step back in time and enjoy an authentic Victorian Tea, set within the Conrad-Caldwell House Museum (1402 St. James Court), which will be fully decorated for the holiday season! This traditional tea party is an all-ages event and will feature a variety of teas, provided by the Louisville Tea Company, and a sampling of savory and sweet treats enjoyed during the Victorian era. Guests can also get a head start on holiday shopping at The Woman’s Club Of Louisville (1320 S. 4th Street) at the holiday gift boutique and their year-round consignment shop, Carriage Trade. For convenience, there will be free parking and regular shuttle pick-ups throughout the tour area. Making this year’s tour even more exciting is the premium bourbon tasting hosted by the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience. Between tour stops guests who are 21 and over can relax between and enjoy a nice some of Kentucky’s finest bourbon. Tastings are held at the  Louisville Bourbon Inn from noon to 5p.m. Saturday and 1p.m. to 5p.m. Sunday.

Old Louisville Holiday Home Tour pre-sale tickets are available until Friday, December 6 for $25 and can be purchased by clicking here, or by visiting the Historic Old Louisville Visitors Center in Central Park (1340 S. 4th Street), which also serves as the ticketing headquarters during the event. Guests are encouraged to bring the whole family. Children 12 and under are free. Day-of tickets can be purchased for $30 online and redeemed at the Visitors Center, or on site, where guests will receive their tour booklet (which serves as the admission ticket).

130 W Ormsby Ave - Home of David Brown

The Old Louisville Holiday Home Tour is known for giving tour-goers a rare glimpse inside beautiful Victorian-era private residences and historic buildings dressed in their holiday finery. But “holiday finery” for some homeowners might be spectacular, ornate – and some may even call them outrageous – decorations. One such homeowner is Old Louisville resident David Brown. His home, again on the 43rd annual tour by popular demand, is being featured in “Outrageous Holiday Houses,” an HGTV special hosted by Kentucky native Lance Bass that will explore some of the most elaborate holiday displays in North America. The show will premiere Thursday, November 28 (Thanksgiving Day), at 11pm on Spectrum channel 51, and repeat throughout December. Bass, a huge fan of Christmas himself, is excited to host this show, and David is thrilled to have been a part of it. “It was a wonderful experience working with Scott Brothers Entertainment and Lance Bass on the Outrageous Holiday Houses HGTV special,” said Brown. “I am truly blessed to be the caretaker of this home in Old Louisville. I am also grateful for a community of neighbors who are so supportive of the gems we get to call home,” concluded Brown. On this year’s tour, attendees will get to see for themselves why HGTV deemed David Brown’s home at 130 W. Ormsby an outrageous holiday house. With more than 28 Christmas trees and countless other seasonal decorations, this home is a holiday wonderland. Christmas was the happiest time of the year for his very close family, so David’s love of the holiday started very young. His grandparents made Christmas exceptionally special, with both of his grandfathers involved in the decorating. He has tinsel that hung on his maternal grandparents’ tree the first year they were married, and a foil-covered star from his father’s father. A small sleigh on the parlor mantel is from David’s childhood home and reminds him of a special time when people seemed more joyous and were kinder to each other. David continues to add to the six generations of family decorations he’s inherited with collections of over 600 Christopher Radko hand-blown glass German Christmas ornaments, a curated collection of tree-toppers and Christmas-themed motionettes (including an animated children’s kitchen). In addition to Christmas-themed items, David also collects figurines that were created in Dresden, Germany by Friedrich Böttger, a local alchemist. Böttger figured out a formula for hard-paste porcelain, which he produced beginning in 1710 in Meissen. By the middle of the 18th century, figures styled after Italian commedia characters were common. One of the most famous techniques of Dresden artists was something called Dresden lace. To create the illusion of real fabric on figurines of women dancing at royal balls or posing in groups, decorators would dip actual, delicate lace into porcelain slip before applying it by hand to the porcelain figure. When fired in a kiln, the fabric would burn away, leaving a hard but extremely fragile shell of frozen crinoline skirts and billowy material behind. Individuals had to apprentice for more than thirty before becoming an official Dresden artist. David’s most prized Dresden figurine, “Lady with Baskets,” was made in 1887 and won best in show in 1910, 1911, 1912, 1914, 1915 and 1916. The figurines have not been made since Dresden was bombed during World War II, making them even more precious. David is also an avid collector of glassware, with more than 24,000 pounds of glass, including an expansive array of Fenton. Originally from Campbellsburg, David moved to Louisville as an undergraduate student at the University of Louisville and knew that he didn’t want to live anywhere else except Old Louisville. After graduation, he moved back to his hometown briefly, but he returned in 2009 and purchased a home on W. St. Catherine. Knowing that he eventually wanted a larger home, David kept his eye on 130 W Ormsby Avenue. In 2013, he put his W. St. Catherine home on the market, selling it in just three days! He finally obtained his current home after 14 months of negotiations. With only six months to make it livable, David did most of the renovations himself with the help of a few friends. The work, including new wiring, re-plastering ceilings and walls (after removing 30 layers of wallpaper) and refinishing the original hardwood inlaid floors made black from grime and overuse, resulted in many 20-foot dumpsters full of debris! Fortunately, several items original to the home remained in tact and could be restored: all woodwork, including doors and eleven fireplace mantels; six stained glass windows; gold leaf crown molding; Lincrusta wall coverings; ceramic foyer tile; and a chandelier in a second-floor bedroom. Another very interesting original feature includes a water system that begins at the roof, brings rainwater into a silo in the attic, and then funnels it into boxed gutters and through the walls, emptying it directly into the sewer system. This 5,200 square-foot Italianate and Queen Anne-style house was built in the 1890’s for a Frenchman, who imported the floors from France in a kit. The daughter of another long-term occupant lived in the house until she was 90! In the 1950s, the basement room under the front parlor was a doctor’s office, with its entrance from a side door on 2nd Street. At some point in its history, the house was divided into 12 apartments, but fortunately, a subsequent owner restored it to single-family. David estimates he is the home’s fifth owner. This house has been featured in the Courier-Journal, the Voice Tribune, Kentucky Home and Garden, and has also been on the Old Louisville Hidden Treasurers Garden Tour.

Give-A-Jam to End Homelessness Returns to Headliners December 19th

Louisville, Kentucky (December 2, 2019) -  The ninth annual Give-A-Jam to End Homelessness will be held at Headliners Music Hall, 1386 Lexington Road, on Thursday, December 19th, from 7pm-11pm. The event is a fundraiser for the Coalition for the Homeless, and in its first eight years, it has raised more than $250,000 for the Coalition's efforts to house the most vulnerable homeless persons living on the streets of Louisville. 

This year's event will feature performances by dozens of local musicians and artists, soup prepared by Chef Finbar Kinsella, a raffle featuring fine bourbon, concert tickets, food items, and a cash bar. Admission is $25 in advance and $30 at the door, and includes one free bowl of soup while supplies last. VIP tickets are available for $70 in advance and $75 at the door, and include balcony viewing, private bar, free reserved parking, and appetizers from fine local restaurants.

Tickets can be purchased without ticketing fees atCarmichael's Bookstore (2720 Frankfort Avenue in Crescent Hill, or 1295 Bardstown Road in the Highlands) or with cash at the Headliners Box Office. Women Vote 100 Celebration

“The glory of each generation is to make its own precedents." One of the most gratifying and exciting aspects of celebrating the centennial of women finally gaining the right to vote in the United States is discovering these precedents. Learning about women and events that largely aren’t or haven’t been taught in general history classes in school. Meeting them, and what they did, for the first time, even if it’s 100 years after they did it. We meet them. At long last.  For instance, the woman who originally made the statement above that opens this month’s Women Vote 100 newsletter was Belva Ann Lockwood. If you’re like us, you have heard little to nothing about her outside of women’s history courses.  That’s more than a shame, because hers is as quintessential an American story as any in the self-made annals that are well-worn with repetition and repute. Her statement was drawn from her own life:  Born in 1830 in New York, she attended school and became a teacher. After she was widowed, she went to college, graduating in 1857. She continued to teach and continued her own education, moving to Washington, D.C., where she ran her own co-educational, private school and studied law. She was refused admission to Georgetown and Howard universities, but finally gained admission to the new National University Law School, where she graduated in 1873. She was admitted to the District of Columbia bar the same year, but she still had to fight another six years to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the first woman to do so. According to Britannica, Lockwood became one of the most effective women’s advocates of her time. They wrote, “She drafted a bill for equal pay for equal work by women in government employment, and the bill was enacted into law in 1872. After being denied admission to the Supreme Court in 1876 she singlehandedly lobbied enabling legislation through Congress and in March 1879 became the first woman to avail herself of the new law.  She gained national prominence as a lecturer on women’s rights and was active in the affairs of various suffrage organizations.” She was the first woman to argue a case before the Supreme Court, in 1880. She also sponsored Samuel Lowery to the Supreme Court bar, and he became the first African-American attorney to argue before the Court. Lockwood ran for president of the United States in 1884 and 1888 as the candidate for the National Equal Rights Party, and served as a delegate for the U.S. Department of State in the International Congress of Charities, Correction and Philanthropy in Geneva in 1896, and attended European peace conferences in the early 20th century. She also continued to work for equality and parity for women in the areas of property rights, equal guardianship of children and suffrage rights in new states being admitted to the union. So what does all this have to do with today?  Well, at least this, per constitutioncenter.org “According to research compiled by the Supreme Court Historical Society and The Constitutional Sources Project, women had argued 1,430 cases at the Court as of December 2016. More than 700 women had presented cases at Supreme Court arguments since Lockwood appeared in 1880.” Impressive, to be sure, but context is all.  While women now make up more than 1 in 3 attorneys in the U.S., studies show that women attorneys make fewer than 20 percent of the arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court. You can read more about that here: https://empiricalscotus.com/2017/10/22/dearth-female-args/ We’ll let the estimable Ms. Lockwood have the last word on the precedent she set, and the ones she continues to influence: “Reforms are slow, but they never go backward.”

Sixty-four years ago this month... Rosa Parks said no, and her refusal to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama bus helped to launch the civil rights movement.  “I had given up my seat before, but this day,I was especially tired,” she would say. “Tired from my work as a seamstress, and tired from the ache in my heart.” She was arrested for civil disobedience, her mug shot showing her in hat, coat, glasses and holding a sign reading “7053” against her chest.  Among the awards she would collect for her courage were the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Gold Medal and the Springarn Medal

This week, a statue of Parks was unveiled in Montgomery.

Rosa Parks’ standing up by staying seated was yet another reminder that equality wasn’t shared by everyone in the United States, and a crucial component toward that end wouldn’t arrive for yet another 10 years — the Voting Rights Act of 1965. It’s why the Voting Rights Act is being commemorated along with the centennial of the 19th Amendment here in Louisville. 

Ms. Parks was 92 years old when she died in 2005. 

Registration Open: 2020 Louisville Corporate Games IV presented by Humana

Louisville, Ky. - December 3, 2019 - The Louisville Sports Commission (LSC) today announced that registration for the Louisville Corporate Games IV presented by Humana is now open. The event will be held Saturday, May 30, 2020, from 8 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. on the Kentucky Country Day School campus.

The Louisville Corporate Games is a community-wide event that brings together employees from Louisville and Southern Indiana-area businesses and organizations for a day of friendly competition and employee camaraderie. It is comprised of 15 events, some highly competitive and others geared toward participation to get people moving, as well as activities that foster company spirit.

"The Corporate Games are like a field day for adults," said LSC President and CEO Karl Schmitt, Jr. "This is a fun, first-class event where businesses can put their corporate health and wellness programs into action and reward their employees for their efforts. And the Corporate Games are structured to encourage employee camaraderie in the spirit of competition."

Participation is open to full and part-time employees - and their spouses or partners - of companies located in in the Louisville MSA. Each company's team roster can include as few as 15 and up to 100 participants; participation will be limited to the first 60 companies to formally submit a registration form.

Company teams earn points in each event that are totaled to produce a winner. Some events produce points through accuracy and participation; other events match up company teams in bracketed play and reward the top finishers. Additional points are awarded to companies taking part in the Good Sports activities.

The 2019 Corporate Games event was held on June 1, 2019, with 45 companies competing in four divisions based on total number of employees. PNC Bank won the Division One category as well as being the Overall Champion; Papa Johns won the Division Two category; University of Louisville athletics won the Division Three category; and Strategic Marketing Services won the Division Four category.

The Filson to close to the public January 6-17, 2020

The Filson will be closed to the public from Monday, January 6, 2020 through Friday, January 17, 2020 and will reopen during normal business hours on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 after the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Filson staff will use this two-week period as time for planning, organization, prioritization, and teambuilding in order to continue to collect, preserve, and tell the significant stories of Kentucky and Ohio Valley history and culture. There will be no tours during this time.

In Case You Missed It: The Works Week

Know Waste: Packaging from online shopping The common practice of online shopping means we have a lot of extra waste at home. From bubble wrap to cardboard to padded envelopes and air pillows, the list goes on. The best thing to do is reuse the items - refill the boxes, pack fragile items with bubble wrap or air pillows, mail something else in the envelopes, or use items for craft projects. (Or you can always donate to someone else to reuse.) But if you find yourself needing to dispose of them, here's some useful information:

Cardboard Boxes Please recycle your cardboard! Flatten the boxes to conserve space in your own recycling bin or in our recycling dumpsters around town. Don't put them out for Large Item Collection ("junk") because they won't get recycled.  Bubble Wrap, Air Pillows These can be recycled with plastic bags at participating retail stores. Keep them out of your home recycling containers and drop off recycling dumpsters.  Padded Envelopes To know what to do with these, you have to know what they're made of. Some envelopes have paper surrounding bubble wrap. These cannot be recycled since they are made of a mix of materials. Some are all plastic and can go with the bubble wrap (see above). If the padding is made of all paper, the envelope can go in your home recycling containers or drop off recycling dumpsters.  Styrofoam Large blocks of Styrofoam can be recycled at Foam Fabricators, 950 Progress Blvd, New Albany, IN. Crime Mapping

First Division

Major Andy McClinton Andrew McClinton began his career in law enforcement on January 22, 2001 with the former Louisville Division of Police (LPD). As a patrol officer, he served in the former Sixth District (LPD) and First Division. As a detective, he served in the First Division Flex Platoon and in the Criminal Intelligence Unit. He was also a member of the Dignitary Protection Team for three (3) years. After being promoted to Sergeant in 2008, he served in the First Division, Robbery Unit, Professional Standards Unit and the Public Integrity Unit. In 2016, he was promoted to Lieutenant and worked in the Third Division and Administrative Services.  In 2017, McClinton was promoted to Major and commanded the Administrative Services Division. Major McClinton holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Political Science from Hanover College. He is a graduate of the Academy of Police Supervision at Eastern Kentucky University and the 136th Session of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officer’s Course at the University of Louisville. Major McClinton is married with two (2) children.

Second Division

Major Ryan Bates Bates began his law enforcement career in August 1997 with the Louisville Division of Police. He served in the former Second, Fourth, and Sixth Districts. He was also a member of the Street Crimes Unit and the Gang Squad. After merger, Bates served as a patrol officer in the First Division. He was promoted to sergeant in August 2005. He served as a sergeant in the Second Division where he supervised the mid-watch platoon, FLEX Unit, and Detectives Unit. In 2012, Bates was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Fourth Division. He also served in the Second Division, where he supervised the mid-watch platoon and Division Resource Officers (DROs).   After being promoted to the rank of major, Bates commanded the Fourth Division. Major Bates served on the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team for 14 years. He served on the SWAT Team as an officer, sergeant, and lieutenant. He was appointed as the Assistant Commander in 2012 and Commander in 2015. Bates has also served on two (2) task forces which were created to address violent crime in the community. Major Bates is a graduate of Xavier University and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Business. He is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officers Course.

Fourth Division

Major Tim Burkett Major Tim Burkett began his career with the former Louisville Division of Police (LPD) in 1999 . He was a patrol officer and division detective in the former Fourth District. Additionally, he was a Sex Crimes detective and served on the Dignitary Protection Team (DPT). In 2007, Burkett was promoted to sergeant where he was a patrol sergeant and a division detective sergeant in the Eighth Division. In 2010, Burkett was promoted to lieutenant and commanded the Property Room. He also served as a Special Events lieutenant in the Special Operations Division. While in the Special Events Unit, he was responsible for planning and operating medium to large scale special events. He has been part of the command group for the PGA Championship, the Ironman Triathlon, Thunder over Louisville, the National Rifle Association (NRA) National Convention and many other events. He has been the lead on numerous events including marathons, parades, Muhammad Ali's Memorial Service and the world renowned Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby. After being promoted to major, Burkett commanded the Special Operations Division Major Burkett holds a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice with a cognate in Public Administration. He was a Dean's Scholar graduate of the University of Louisville's Southern Police Institute Administrative Officers Course. He is a certified instructor with the Commonwealth of Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training

Dog of the Week: Kimchee is a bit of a shy guy but he’s also a very good boy.  The approximately 2-year-old Boxer/Labrador Retriever mix has excellent manners and did well on a recent field trip away from the shelter. Kimchee is a friendly, energetic dog that’s also laidback after burning off some energy. He knows several commands This sweet dogs loves going  for walks, rolling in the grass – and he’s really good at catching his treats. Adopt Kimchee for free with an approved application, thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. He weighs about 60lbs. and he’s already neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. Cat of the Week: Dodger’s one lucky kitty! The approximately 6-month-old Tabby was pulled from a  running car engine after the driver heard his meows. Dodger was covered in grease with two injured legs. The little guy that weighs just three pounds is all better now and ready for a furever home. Kitten adoptions are BOGO at Animal House! Adopt Dodger for a $100 donation, or adopt Dodger and a friend for a $100 donation. Every adoption includes spay/neuter, microchip and vaccinations!
