Message From McCraney

Mark Your Calendar

December 12th is the last legislative session for the Metro Council before the holiday break. The agenda will be filled with interesting legislation and a few resolutions to boot.

If you are available and looking for a great place to be entertained, I invite you to join me in the City Hall Chambers at 6:00 p.m. to witness your representatives at work. If you let me know in advance that you're coming, I will be sure to give you a "shout out" from the platform.

Also, on December 14, I will be hosting the last "Mingle with McCraney" of 2019.  I hope you'll mark your calendar and join me at the Walden School at 10:00 a.m. Accompanying me will be several key professionals from various local government agencies.  These employees will be available to listen to your concerns and help you navigate your way through their agency offerings. If you live near an abandoned home, or if you feel that a neighbor's home is in need of repairs and is not in compliance, then you'll have an opportunity to discuss your concerns with a code enforcement officer. If you have questions about how to start a neighborhood associations, you'll get the information at this meeting. If you have questions to ask of a police officer or fireman, then you're in luck because they will be at the Walden School too.

The Walden School is hosting this month's Mingle with McCraney and is looking forward to showing off its fabulousness.  I toured the school several weeks ago and was amazed to learn of its educational successes. It is a beautiful school, and is much larger than it appears from the outside.  We are grateful to the Walden School for being a District 7 host, and encourage you to stop by to take a look around.

Please grab your coat, gloves and a few of your neighbors and stop by on December 14 to Mingle with your Councilwoman and talk to key agency representatives to get the latest scoop on what's going on in Metro Government and tell us how we can best be of service to you.

Come one, Come All!

Let's Talk

GFOA recognizing Metro’s fiscal integrity and transparency for nine years in a row is just one more example of our consistent excellence,” said Mayor Greg Fischer. “I would like to extend a special thanks to our Director of Finance, Monica Harmon, and her entire team of professionals who worked so diligently to prepare this report which serves our residents and builds trust in the strength of our government.”

Chief Financial Officer Daniel Frockt added: “The Office of Management & Budget (OMB) is honored to receive this distinction. It demonstrates our commitment to the values of teamwork, transparency, and integrity that are encompassed throughout Metro government thanks to Mayor Fischer’s leadership.”

The GFOA is a nonprofit professional association serving over 20,000 government finance professionals in North America.

All of Metro’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports since merger are available here.

[Daniel Frockt is the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for Louisville Metro.  He advises the Mayor’s Office on the financial health of the city along with routine testimony to the Metro Council and public.  He leads the Office of Management & Budget (OMB) which is responsible for the city’s finances, including its approximately $800 million annual operating and capital budget.  OMB administers procurement, risk management, treasury, accounts payable/receivable, accounting, grants, payroll, financial systems and revenue collection.]

Know Waste: Packaging from online shopping

Box 1

The common practice of online shopping means we have a lot of extra waste at home. From bubble wrap to cardboard to padded envelopes and air pillows, the list goes on. The best thing to do is reuse the items - refill the boxes, pack fragile items with bubble wrap or air pillows, mail something else in the envelopes, or use items for craft projects. (Or you can always donate to someone else to reuse.) But if you find yourself needing to dispose of them, here's some useful information:

Box 2

Cardboard Boxes

Please recycle your cardboard! Flatten the boxes to conserve space in your own recycling bin or in our recycling dumpsters around town. Don't put them out for Large Item Collection ("junk") because they won't get recycled.

Bubble Wrap, Air Pillows

These can be recycled with plastic bags at participating retail stores. Keep them out of your home recycling containers and drop off recycling dumpsters.

Padded Envelopes

To know what to do with these, you have to know what they're made of. Some envelopes have paper surrounding bubble wrap. These cannot be recycled since they are made of a mix of materials. Some are all plastic and can go with the bubble wrap (see above). If the padding is made of all paper, the envelope can go in your home recycling containers or drop off recycling dumpsters.

Styrofoam

Large blocks of Styrofoam can be recycled at Foam Fabricators, 950 Progress Blvd, New Albany, IN. They must be clean and free of tape and stickers. They do not accept any other form of Styrofoam. And Styrofoam is NOT accepted in curbside recycling or drop off recycling dumpsters.
