Light Up Louisville has been a tradition for 39 years for thousands of residents and visitors to our city.

Light Up Louisville is held the day after Thanksgiving (11/28 this year) with the arrival of Santa Claus who will help Mayor Greg Fischer illuminate downtown Louisville. This event serves as the official starting point for the holiday season in Louisville, brings together people from all over the city, along with family, friends and visitors, to enjoy a day full of excitement, entertainment and community.

Featured photo - new fishing dock installed at Tom Wallace and Waverly Parks Crews from Louisville Parks and Recreation and EZ Construction have installed two new accessible fishing docks at Waverly Park in South Louisville and in Jefferson Memorial Forest’s Tom Wallace Lake this week. The two ADA accessible docks were fabricated by a Florida company, GatorDock.  The dock features a slip-resistant deck and both measure  about 200 square feet. “We’re hoping that these new docks at Waverly and Tom Wallace will be used for generations to come,” said Jason T. Canuel, Assistant Director of Engineering and Infrastructure for Louisville Parks and Recreation. For a short video on the dock construction project, please click here.  Holiday events being scheduled at Louisville Parks and Recreation sites With the holidays just around the corner, Louisville Parks and Recreation is collecting our list of events, and we're checking it twice! You can find family-friendly, low-cost events at this  Sign-ups for Louisville Parks and Recreation winter basketball leagues underway Registration for Louisville Parks and Recreation's adult winter basketball league at the Cyril Allgeier Community Center is now open. To register, call (502) 456-3261 Co-ed play is encouraged, and the league is geared towards players 18 years of age and older. Typically teams are made up of eight or more players, and they are guaranteed at least six fully-staffed league games. Registration cost is $450 per team.  For more information, click here.  Mary T. Meagher hosting holiday toy drive for Camp Quality  Help support the children at Camp Quality Kentuckiana during our annual toy drive. We are accepting donations of NEW toys for kids of all ages. Your donations can be dropped off at the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center. For more information, call (502) 897-9949.  Warm water pool at Mary T. closed this week  Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center's warm pool will be CLOSED November 24 – 30 for maintenance. New LED lights will be installed in the warm pool area during this time. The pool will re-open on December 2. Also, Mary T. is seeking to hire lifeguards for various shifts. Please call (502) 897-9949 for more information.  Adaptive and Inclusive Recreation (AIR) schedule is online Adaptive and Inclusive Recreation (AIR) offers a wide range of recreational activities for individuals with intellectual and/or physical disabilities, along with their friends and families. Programs include wheelchair basketball, aqua exercise, bowling, dances, assisted shopping and more. AIR - formerly Adapted Leisure Activities - is a Louisville Paralympics Sports Program and offers a wide variety of adapted sports for all ages. Year round training and competition is available. Down Syndrome of Louisville

Recently, LMPD were asked to teach a safety course about Good Touch & Bad Touch, and using your voice to defend yourself for the Down Syndrome of Louisville in Jefferson County. Their mission is to provide support, education, and advocacy for individuals with Down Syndrome; thus enabling each individual to reach their full potential. 

Well, they are easily victimized and reached out for some help. 

So we did! We role played, talked about Good & Bad Touch, lots of yelling! Safety nets, secrets, bullies, general safety, and a little bit of cop stuff that’s super cool. Thank you Cathy Palmer, Director of Adult Development Academy, for giving US this opportunity. It made us better. 

LMPD & LMFD: Pre-K Community Day

The Scott C Detrick Education Center, held a Community Day for their PRE-K students with Police & Fire! It is a 2 day event, 100 kids and more! The 4th and 6th got together and spoke about Stranger Danger, Bullies, Gun Safety, and what to do if you're lost. Then we jumped on the fire truck! Thanks Engine-18!! 

LMPD 4th Division Toy Drive has begun!

The 4^th Division has started collecting brand new toys for the 2019 Toy Drive.

Crime Mapping

First Division

Major Andy McClinton Andrew McClinton began his career in law enforcement on January 22, 2001 with the former Louisville Division of Police (LPD). As a patrol officer, he served in the former Sixth District (LPD) and First Division. As a detective, he served in the First Division Flex Platoon and in the Criminal Intelligence Unit. He was also a member of the Dignitary Protection Team for three (3) years. After being promoted to Sergeant in 2008, he served in the First Division, Robbery Unit, Professional Standards Unit and the Public Integrity Unit. In 2016, he was promoted to Lieutenant and worked in the Third Division and Administrative Services.  In 2017, McClinton was promoted to Major and commanded the Administrative Services Division. Major McClinton holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Political Science from Hanover College. He is a graduate of the Academy of Police Supervision at Eastern Kentucky University and the 136th Session of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officer’s Course at the University of Louisville. Major McClinton is married with two (2) children.

Second Division

Major Ryan Bates Bates began his law enforcement career in August 1997 with the Louisville Division of Police. He served in the former Second, Fourth, and Sixth Districts. He was also a member of the Street Crimes Unit and the Gang Squad. After merger, Bates served as a patrol officer in the First Division. He was promoted to sergeant in August 2005. He served as a sergeant in the Second Division where he supervised the mid-watch platoon, FLEX Unit, and Detectives Unit. In 2012, Bates was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Fourth Division. He also served in the Second Division, where he supervised the mid-watch platoon and Division Resource Officers (DROs).   After being promoted to the rank of major, Bates commanded the Fourth Division. Major Bates served on the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team for 14 years. He served on the SWAT Team as an officer, sergeant, and lieutenant. He was appointed as the Assistant Commander in 2012 and Commander in 2015. Bates has also served on two (2) task forces which were created to address violent crime in the community. Major Bates is a graduate of Xavier University and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Business. He is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officers Course.

Fourth Division

Major Tim Burkett Major Tim Burkett began his career with the former Louisville Division of Police (LPD) in 1999 . He was a patrol officer and division detective in the former Fourth District. Additionally, he was a Sex Crimes detective and served on the Dignitary Protection Team (DPT). In 2007, Burkett was promoted to sergeant where he was a patrol sergeant and a division detective sergeant in the Eighth Division. In 2010, Burkett was promoted to lieutenant and commanded the Property Room. He also served as a Special Events lieutenant in the Special Operations Division. While in the Special Events Unit, he was responsible for planning and operating medium to large scale special events. He has been part of the command group for the PGA Championship, the Ironman Triathlon, Thunder over Louisville, the National Rifle Association (NRA) National Convention and many other events. He has been the lead on numerous events including marathons, parades, Muhammad Ali's Memorial Service and the world renowned Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby. After being promoted to major, Burkett commanded the Special Operations Division Major Burkett holds a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice with a cognate in Public Administration. He was a Dean's Scholar graduate of the University of Louisville's Southern Police Institute Administrative Officers Course. He is a certified instructor with the Commonwealth of Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training

Cat of the Month: Snicker Doodle is a sweet cat that’s looking for a home in time for the holidays. The approximately 3-year-old Tabby with the big green eyes is a friendly, laidback cat whose adoption fee is waived for an approved adopter, thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. Snicker Doodle weighs about 10lbs. He’s already neutered, microchipped and vaccinated.  To meet or adopt Snicker Doodle, visit Animal House Adoption Center located at 3516 Newburg Road, daily from 12-6pm. Dog of the Month: Gloria is a gorgeous green-eyed girl that’s waiting to fall in love with the perfect family. The approximately 3-year-old Pit Bull is a happy, playful dog with plenty of silly moments to keep you laughing. She’s also a great sidekick that can travel with you. Gloria did great on a recent field trip to Cherokee Park. She was good in the car and she’s easy to leash walk. Gloria also loves giving and receiving affection and does well with older children. Gloria’s adoption fee is waived for an approved adopter thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. She weighs about 50lbs and she’s already spayed, microchipped and vaccinated.  Gloria can be tested with kids or other dogs but she needs a home with no cats.
