The Old Louisville Holiday Home Tour is known for giving tour-goers a rare glimpse inside beautiful Victorian-era private residences and historic buildings dressed in their holiday finery. But “holiday finery” for some homeowners might be spectacular, ornate – and some may even call them outrageous – decorations. One such homeowner is Old Louisville resident David Brown. His home, again on the 43rd annual tour by popular demand, is being featured in “Outrageous Holiday Houses,” an HGTV special hosted by Kentucky native Lance Bass that will explore some of the most elaborate holiday displays in North America. The show will premiere Thursday, November 28 (Thanksgiving Day), at 11pm on Spectrum channel 51, and repeat throughout December. Bass, a huge fan of Christmas himself, is excited to host this show, and David is thrilled to have been a part of it.

“It was a wonderful experience working with Scott Brothers Entertainment and Lance Bass on the Outrageous Holiday Houses HGTV special,” said Brown. “I am truly blessed to be the caretaker of this home in Old Louisville. I am also grateful for a community of neighbors who are so supportive of the gems we get to call home,” concluded Brown.

On this year’s tour, attendees will get to see for themselves why HGTV deemed David Brown’s home at 130 W. Ormsby an outrageous holiday house. With more than 28 Christmas trees and countless other seasonal decorations, this home is a holiday wonderland. Christmas was the happiest time of the year for his very close family, so David’s love of the holiday started very young. His grandparents made Christmas exceptionally special, with both of his grandfathers involved in the decorating. He has tinsel that hung on his maternal grandparents’ tree the first year they were married, and a foil-covered star from his father’s father. A small sleigh on the parlor mantel is from David’s childhood home and reminds him of a special time when people seemed more joyous and were kinder to each other.

David continues to add to the six generations of family decorations he’s inherited with collections of over 600 Christopher Radko hand-blown glass German Christmas ornaments, a curated collection of tree-toppers and Christmas-themed motionettes (including an animated children’s kitchen). In addition to Christmas-themed items, David also collects figurines that were created in Dresden, Germany by Friedrich Böttger, a local alchemist. Böttger figured out a formula for hard-paste porcelain, which he produced beginning in 1710 in Meissen. By the middle of the 18th century, figures styled after Italian commedia characters were common. One of the most famous techniques of Dresden artists was something called Dresden lace. To create the illusion of real fabric on figurines of women dancing at royal balls or posing in groups, decorators would dip actual, delicate lace into porcelain slip before applying it by hand to the porcelain figure. When fired in a kiln, the fabric would burn away, leaving a hard but extremely fragile shell of frozen crinoline skirts and billowy material behind. Individuals had to apprentice for more than thirty before becoming an official Dresden artist. David’s most prized Dresden figurine, “Lady with Baskets,” was made in 1887 and won best in show in 1910, 1911, 1912, 1914, 1915 and 1916. The figurines have not been made since Dresden was bombed during World War II, making them even more precious. David is also an avid collector of glassware, with more than 24,000 pounds of glass, including an expansive array of Fenton.

Originally from Campbellsburg, David moved to Louisville as an undergraduate student at the University of Louisville and knew that he didn’t want to live anywhere else except Old Louisville. After graduation, he moved back to his hometown briefly, but he returned in 2009 and purchased a home on W. St. Catherine. Knowing that he eventually wanted a larger home, David kept his eye on 130 W Ormsby Avenue. In 2013, he put his W. St. Catherine home on the market, selling it in just three days! He finally obtained his current home after 14 months of negotiations. With only six months to make it livable, David did most of the renovations himself with the help of a few friends. The work, including new wiring, re-plastering ceilings and walls (after removing 30 layers of wallpaper) and refinishing the original hardwood inlaid floors made black from grime and overuse, resulted in many 20-foot dumpsters full of debris! Fortunately, several items original to the home remained in tact and could be restored: all woodwork, including doors and eleven fireplace mantels; six stained glass windows; gold leaf crown molding; Lincrusta wall coverings; ceramic foyer tile; and a chandelier in a second-floor bedroom. Another very interesting original feature includes a water system that begins at the roof, brings rainwater into a silo in the attic, and then funnels it into boxed gutters and through the walls, emptying it directly into the sewer system.

This 5,200 square-foot Italianate and Queen Anne-style house was built in the 1890’s for a Frenchman, who imported the floors from France in a kit. The daughter of another long-term occupant lived in the house until she was 90! In the 1950s, the basement room under the front parlor was a doctor’s office, with its entrance from a side door on 2nd Street. At some point in its history, the house was divided into 12 apartments, but fortunately, a subsequent owner restored it to single-family. David estimates he is the home’s fifth owner. This house has been featured in the Courier-Journal, the Voice Tribune, Kentucky Home and Garden, and has also been on the Old Louisville Hidden Treasurers Garden Tour.

"HGTV is stepping into Christmas with some of the most outrageous displays you've ever seen," Bass said in a statement. "We're going to meet the most dedicated and obsessed Christmas fans around. As a huge Christmas fan, I am excited to host this show!" Making this year’s tour even more exciting is the premium bourbon tasting hosted by the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience. Between tour stops guests who are 21 and over can relax between and enjoy a nice some of Kentucky’s finest bourbon. Tastings are held at the  Louisville Bourbon Inn from noon to 5p.m. Saturday and 1p.m. to 5p.m. Sunday. The 43rd annual Old Louisville Holiday Home Tour on Saturday, December 7 and Sunday, December 8 from noon to 6:00 p.m., brings the past into the present, showcasing several homes that use to be run-down and even condemned in some cases, but are now revived and alive after loving restorations. Many of the homes and historical buildings on this year’s tour are true mansions, one of which is located on the iconic St. James Court.  There is something for everyone during the Holiday Home Tour! Step back in time and enjoy an authentic Victorian Tea, set within the Conrad-Caldwell House Museum, which will be fully decorated for the holiday season! Guests can also get a head start on holiday shopping at The Woman’s Club Of Louisville’s holiday gift boutique and year-round consignment shop, Carriage Trade. For convenience, there will be free parking and regular shuttle pick-ups throughout the tour area. More information may be found online. Tree Planting in Limerick – Saturday Morning – 23 November, 2019 9:00am at 8th and St. Catherine Streets. Earlier this year Louisville Metro Forestry granted OLNC $25,000 to plant 150+/- trees in Old Louisville-Limerick. Five projects were selected from a number of requests. Project A – Limerick – 8th and St. Catherine Project B – Limerick – 7th and St Catherine Project C – Ormsby Avenue Project D – Ormsby Avenue Project E – 3rd St South of Hill “Project A” We welcome all to join veteran volunteer tree planters to plant 38 trees at the 8th and St. Catherine area on Saturday, November 23, 2019.  There will be 24 trees that will be planted at Dayspring Baptist Church, 14 along St. Catherine and 8th Streets.  Abram’s Nursery in Buckner, KY will deliver the 2” diameter trees on Friday, 22 November 2019 and Miller Pipeline Co has again agreed to unload and place the trees onsite. No parking signs will be placed in the work area on Thursday. The 700 Block of St. Catherine Street and sections of 8th Street will be closed to through traffic for the safety of the workers. There are 13 supervisors who will be direct the planting including guying, mulching and finish clean-up. Coffee, hot chocolate, and donuts will be available prior to planting and pizza and chili for lunch. Louisville Metro Works have made considerable sidewalk improvements in the area and created medians for tree planting

Louisville Select Boxing Youth boxer Demontaze "Juicy" Duncan sets his sights on the  USA Boxing National Championships in Lake Charles, Louisiana from December 8th-15, 2019.  The Seventeen year old Duncan was a Silver Medalist at the most recent USA Boxing Eastern Championships held in Columbus, Ohio back in October.  For the 17 year old 152lbs Duncan a 1st place at the USA Nationals could land him a spot on Team USA Youth boxing team.  Known for his pressure style and hard punching Duncan continues to develop and add to an already impressive resume.  His 64-6 amateur record  including wins over top ranked fighters gives Duncan the experience it will take to Win the USA Nationals.

November is National Adoption Month You've probably heard us say this a time or two, but adoption days really are the BEST days at St. Joseph Children's Home. There is nothing more beautiful to witness than a child finally knowing that they are with their forever family. That's why this November, we want to give extra thanks to all of the amazing parents, staff, volunteers, and donors who make it possible for Kentucky's most vulnerable children to find their family through St. Joe's. Without our village of supporters, St. Joe's would not be the leader that it is today for taking care of children in need. We continue to maintain one of the highest rates of adoptions in Kentucky and will be celebrating our 19th adoption next Wednesday!  While we understand that not everyone is ready to adopt, there are other ways YOU can make a difference.

Jeff Brown, Assistant Director and Professional Engineer for Public Works, was recognized at the Center for Neighborhoods' Neighborhood Summit on Saturday, November 9. He received the Local Government/Public Official Award given to a suburban city, Metro government or State government individual or body that has shown dedication to grassroots and community involvement in local government and decision making. Congratulations, Jeff!

Al Andrews, Engineer Manager for Public Works, was recognized at Louisville Downtown Partnership's 2019 State of the Downtown event today. He received the S. Russell Smith, Jr. Award of Excellence. This award is named in honor of S. Russell Smith, Jr., whose many years of service, both as a long-time member of the Louisville Downtown Management District (LDMD) Board of Directors, and as its Chairman, were invaluable to LDMD and Downtown Louisville. Congratulations, Al!

Thanksgiving alters waste collection schedule There will be no residential garbage, recycling, or yard waste collection within the Louisville Metro Urban Services District (former Louisville city limits) on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28, 2019.  This holiday incurs a one day delay schedule. Residents who normally have garbage/recycling/yard waste collection on Thursday will have service on Friday, November 29. The regular Friday collection will be delayed until Saturday, November 30.  To view your collection schedule and stay informed about changes, download the Recycle Coach app or use the app on our website. Residents outside the Urban Services District who rely on private haulers for garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection should consult those haulers about their holiday collection schedule.  Staffed recycling centers, the Waste Reduction Center, and the household hazardous waste facility, Haz Bin, will be closed Thursday, November 28 and Friday, November 29. Leaf drop-off will also not be available those days. All four services will resume on Saturday, November 30.

Shredding & Drug Toss Event - Success!

Residents were invited to bring their documents to be shredded and prescription drugs to be disposed of safely on Saturday, November 2, 2019. Participation was up from last year with 390 vehicles. We appreciate the partnership with LMPD for the prescription drugs disposal. And special thanks to the Waste Management District for sponsoring and making this annual event possible.

First Division

Major Andy McClinton Andrew McClinton began his career in law enforcement on January 22, 2001 with the former Louisville Division of Police (LPD). As a patrol officer, he served in the former Sixth District (LPD) and First Division. As a detective, he served in the First Division Flex Platoon and in the Criminal Intelligence Unit. He was also a member of the Dignitary Protection Team for three (3) years. After being promoted to Sergeant in 2008, he served in the First Division, Robbery Unit, Professional Standards Unit and the Public Integrity Unit. In 2016, he was promoted to Lieutenant and worked in the Third Division and Administrative Services.  In 2017, McClinton was promoted to Major and commanded the Administrative Services Division. Major McClinton holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Political Science from Hanover College. He is a graduate of the Academy of Police Supervision at Eastern Kentucky University and the 136th Session of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officer’s Course at the University of Louisville. Major McClinton is married with two (2) children.

Second Division

Major Ryan Bates Bates began his law enforcement career in August 1997 with the Louisville Division of Police. He served in the former Second, Fourth, and Sixth Districts. He was also a member of the Street Crimes Unit and the Gang Squad. After merger, Bates served as a patrol officer in the First Division. He was promoted to sergeant in August 2005. He served as a sergeant in the Second Division where he supervised the mid-watch platoon, FLEX Unit, and Detectives Unit. In 2012, Bates was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Fourth Division. He also served in the Second Division, where he supervised the mid-watch platoon and Division Resource Officers (DROs).   After being promoted to the rank of major, Bates commanded the Fourth Division. Major Bates served on the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team for 14 years. He served on the SWAT Team as an officer, sergeant, and lieutenant. He was appointed as the Assistant Commander in 2012 and Commander in 2015. Bates has also served on two (2) task forces which were created to address violent crime in the community. Major Bates is a graduate of Xavier University and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Business. He is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officers Course.

Fourth Division

Major Tim Burkett Major Tim Burkett began his career with the former Louisville Division of Police (LPD) in 1999 . He was a patrol officer and division detective in the former Fourth District. Additionally, he was a Sex Crimes detective and served on the Dignitary Protection Team (DPT). In 2007, Burkett was promoted to sergeant where he was a patrol sergeant and a division detective sergeant in the Eighth Division. In 2010, Burkett was promoted to lieutenant and commanded the Property Room. He also served as a Special Events lieutenant in the Special Operations Division. While in the Special Events Unit, he was responsible for planning and operating medium to large scale special events. He has been part of the command group for the PGA Championship, the Ironman Triathlon, Thunder over Louisville, the National Rifle Association (NRA) National Convention and many other events. He has been the lead on numerous events including marathons, parades, Muhammad Ali's Memorial Service and the world renowned Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby. After being promoted to major, Burkett commanded the Special Operations Division Major Burkett holds a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice with a cognate in Public Administration. He was a Dean's Scholar graduate of the University of Louisville's Southern Police Institute Administrative Officers Course. He is a certified instructor with the Commonwealth of Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training

Cat of the Week: Rasputin is a laidback cat in need of a forever home.  Rasputin gets along with other cats and can be tested with potential fur siblings or children.  An approved adopter can take home Rasputin for free thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. The approximately 3-year-old, orange Tabby weighs about 10lbs. Rasputin is already neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on vaccinations. Dog of the Week: Tenacious D is a handsome Labrador Retriever that’s sure to catch your attention with his one blue eye and gorgeous smile. He’s approximately 2-years-old and weighs about 60lbs. Tenacious D loves car rides, especially when he gets to stick his nose out the window to sniff the world around him. He prefers to be spoon-fed ice cream rather than stick his muzzle into the cup. It’s probably because Tenacious D is a polite dog with excellent manners!  Adopt this gentle boy for free with an approved application, thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. Tenacious D is already neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. He can be tested with kids or potential fur siblings.
