Speed Hump Sign

Is your neighborhood street facing speeding problems?  Do you and your neighbors desire to have speed humps installed?  Councilwoman Shanklin and the District 2 office want to help!

Vehicles speeding through neighborhood streets is an all too common problem facing many residents of the Louisville Metro area, resulting in dangerous conditions that affect adults and children alike.  District 2 is not immune to this issue, and your Council office would like to help.  Already this year three streets in the Newburg area (Ilex, Shasta, and Kilmer) have been outfitted with brand new speed humps, entirely paid for by Councilwoman Shanklin and her District 2 office.

Still, the Councilwoman is not finished attempting to mitigate the speeding issues often negatively affecting D-2 neighborhoods.  If you and your neighbors have noticed a high number of speeders on your street and would like to be considered for speed hump installation, please contact the District 2 Council office at (502) 574-1102 or via email at either Barbara.Shanklin@louisvilleky.gov or Caleb.Howard@louisvilleky.gov.  Assuming that your street is eligible (must be Metro owned/must be long enough to support speed humps/etc.), after speaking with a representative from our office you will be asked to collect signatures (with individual addresses) from all of your neighbors that live on the street that is requesting the installation of speed humps.  At least 70% of all of the residents currently living on the street requesting speed humps must provide their signature/address in support in order for the street to be considered by Public Works.  Upon completion of this signature page, the original document must be given to Councilwoman Shanklin or Legislative Assistant Caleb Howard personally, or sent to our office at City Hall (601 W. Jefferson St., First Floor, 40202; ATTN: Caleb Howard).  As soon as the signature document is received, LA Howard will deliver it to Public Works, and that department will survey the street to determine whether or not speed humps will be appropriate to install--assuming Public Works signs off on the request, Councilwoman Shanklin will make the final determination with regards to moving forward with the installation or not.

In addition to the speed humps already constructed, both Brenda Drive and Cedrus Circle have recently submitted their signature paperwork and are currently being considered by Public Works.

Leaves

Wondering what to do with fall leaves?

Mowing over leaves to mulch them back into your lawn is a great option for reducing waste and it adds nutrients back into your soil. Residents with yard waste collection can also set them out in paper bags or containers. And all Louisville Metro residents will have the option to dispose of them for free at one of three drop-off sites beginning November 5.

Metro Public Works is offering a free leaf drop-off service November 5 through November 30. Drop-off will not be available on November 28 and 29 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Only loose leaves will be accepted. Containers used to bring leaves to the drop-off sites must be disposed of off-site by residents.

Leaf drop off sites:

Public Works Yard; 10500 Lower River Road (enter from Bethany Lane).  Tuesday – Saturday; 9am. – 3pm.

Public Works East District Operations Center; 595 Hubbards Lane.  Tuesday – Saturday; 9am. – 3pm.

Public Works Waste Reduction Center; 636 Meriwether Avenue.  Tuesday – Friday; 9am. – 5pm.  Saturday:  9am. – 3pm.

Paper Shredding

Free paper shredding and drug toss event!

Louisville residents are invited to bring unneeded documents to be shredded and prescription drugs to be disposed of at a FREE event on November 2, 2019. The paper shredding and drug toss event is a joint operation of Louisville Metro Public Works and Louisville Metro Police. Businesses may not participate in this event. All paper materials will be shredded on site and recycled. Shredding services are donated by the Louisville Branch of Shred-It Louisville.

The drug toss is a drive-through event. In advance, black out all personal information on all medication containers that will be tossed. For safety reasons, sharp items, needles, lances, cosmetics, personal care or hygiene items cannot be accepted. Medication products should never be flushed down the toilet or drain, burned in the open or thrown in the trash because they can contaminate the environment if exposed to drinking and ground water.

Location:  Kentucky Exposition Center (Lot W):  1030 Phillips Lane; 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Animal Shelter Opening 2019

Metro Animal Services' new animal shelter officially opens at 3516 Newburg Road

Mayor Greg Fischer joined Metro Animal Services Director Ozzy Gibson and Friends of Metro Animal Services (FOMAS) Monday to officially open a state-of-the-art animal shelter at 3516 Newburg Road, which replaces the outdated facility on Manslick Road.

The 33,000-square-foot facility puts all animal-related services on one campus where residents can adopt a pet, purchase or renew a pet license, or take a stray pet.

A modern veterinary wing meets industry standards and includes the shelter’s first X-ray and ultrasound machines, allowing LMAS to quickly evaluate sick and injured pets. There are four operating tables as well as separate rooms for pets being prepped and recovering from surgery.

The nearly $11.6 million dollar facility also includes a fully furnished clinic, which will operate independently from the shelter, offering pet owners low-cost spay and neuter services, vaccinations and microchipping.

The LMAS Animal Care Facility is located next to Animal House Adoption Center, which was built in 2009. Shelter construction began in July 2018 with funding from Louisville Metro Government and gracious donations from FOMAS and the Harshaw Family Foundation. The LMAS Animal Care Campus is also the future home of Alley Cat Advocates, which manages the Community Cat Program.

The LMAS Animal Care Facility is open from noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Animal House Adoption Center is now open seven days a week, excluding holidays. Meet adoptable pets daily from noon to 6 p.m., and Fridays from noon to 7 p.m. For more information about LMAS, visit this website.

LouieConnect

LouieConnect

Louisville non-profits have launched a new website to help connect people in need of food, shelter, and more.  Metro United Way and the Family Scholar House partnered to create LouieConnect, modeling it on a similar site created in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  When someone uses LouieConnect, the web-based app asks for basic information and then lists applicable resources nearby — from food pantries to shelters to career centers to financial literacy programs.
