Garvin Gate Blues Festival!

Garvin Gate Blues Festival returns to “The Gate” for its 25th year on Friday, October 11 & Saturday, October 12. Known as the largest free street music festival in Louisville, Garvin Gate Blues Festival celebrates blues, the arts and culture. At that time the Garvin Place Association was expanding its boundaries to become the Garvin Place Neighborhood Association and offered to host the growing event. Some of the legendary blues musicians that have performed at the Garvin Gate Blues Festival throughout the years include Bob Margolin-Muddy Waters’ guitar player and Big Bill Morganfield, Muddy’s son, Billy Flynn’s Chicago Blues Party featuring Elmo James, Jr. and Milwaukee Slim, Lil’ Ed and the Blues Imperials, Nora Jean Wallace, Grady Champion, Karen Lovely, Sugar Blue, Lurrie Bell and Eddy Clearwater. Proceeds benefit The Garvin Gate Neighborhood Association and the Old Louisville neighborhood.

Digital Inclusion in Louisville's Somali Community

Digital inclusion. The Mayor on Tuesday was joined by representatives of Louisville’s Somali community, UPS and the Office for Civic Innovation and Technology to cut the ribbon on a new computer lab located in the Somali Community Center. The computer lab opening was part of National Digital Inclusion Week and seeks to bridge the digital divide by providing high-tech skills.

It’s officially fall, and while the leaves changing color is beautiful, once they fall to the ground and start covering catch basins, they present a problem during heavy rain events. We encourage residents to help us keep catch basins clear and let us know when there’s a problem.

Breast Cancer Awareness: Historic City Hall Clock Tower goes pink

October is usually a month associated with orange and black. However, the Louisville Metro Council is focusing its attention on pink to let everyone know it’s time to do something to fight a killer.

“We hope pink will serve as a reminder that lives from all over Metro Louisville have been touched by breast cancer,” says Council President David James (D-6). “Anything we can do to bring awareness to prevention of this disease is a priority for many of us on this Council.”

Breast cancer information and statistics:

• 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
• After skin cancers, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among U.S. women, and the second leading cause of cancer death among women after lung cancer.
• In 2019, approximately 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among U.S. women, and 41,760 women will die from the disease.
• The overall breast cancer death rate has decreased consistently since 1989, attributed both to improvements in early detection (through screening as well as increased awareness of symptoms) and treatment, for a total decline of 40% through 2017. As a result of this decline, 375,900 breast cancer deaths have been averted in U.S. women through 2017.
• In 2019, there are more than 3.8 million breast cancer survivors (women).
• In 2019, about 2,670 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in men. About 500 men will die from breast cancer.

          The Metro Council is also encouraging the community to get involved with the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. It will take place on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 27, at a new location, Cardinal Stadium. Registration opens at 12:30 p.m.; walk begins at 1:30.

The event is free and open to the public and raises funds for breast cancer research, patient support programs, and early detection and prevention programs.

7th Annual Jack O'Lantern Spectacular kick off!

The Seventh Annual Jack O'Lantern Spectacular kicked off Tuesday with a press conference at Iroquois Park. This year's event begins on Tuesday, October 8 and will conclude on November 3. 34^thAnnual African American Catholic Day of Reflection with a Celebration of African American Catholic History

The Archdiocese of Louisville’s Office of Multicultural Ministry and its African American Catholic Ministry will host its 34^th Annual African American Catholic Day of Reflection on Saturday, November 9, 2019, from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Catholic Enrichment Center, 3146 West Broadway, Louisville, KY 40211. This will include a celebration of African American Catholic History. The theme is “From Maintenance to Mission, Part II”. Some of the speakers and workshop presenters for the day will include Rev. Chris Rhodes, Dr. Sheila Barbour, Dr. Tyrone Powers, Dr. James B. Mandley, Black Brothers-Black Sisters Involvement, and more. This event is an implementation of the National Black Catholic Pastoral Plan and the archdiocesan Strategic Plan. Registration for adults is $30.00 and for youth (grades 1-12) is $15.00. Lunch is included. Registration after October 28, 2019 for adults will be $40.00 and youth $20.00. Each parish is invited to send at least 40 participants including a youth delegation, young adult delegation, pastor/deacon, parish leadership team members, and anyone else excited to celebrate the gifts of the African American Catholic community. Veterans Day Appreciation Luncheon

The Catholic Enrichment Center of the Archdiocese of Louisville’s Office of Multicultural Ministry located at 3146 West Broadway, Louisville, KY 40211 will host a Veterans Day Appreciation Luncheon on Monday, November 11, 2020 from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. This event will honor the men and women who have served in the military. The event is free. Veterans Day is a federal holiday which falls on November 11^th. It is designated as a day to honor all who have served in the military. All veterans are welcome. 9^th Annual Heroes of Hope Awards Celebration

The Office of Multicultural Ministry’s Catholic Enrichment Center located at 3146 West Broadway, Louisville, KY 40211 will host its 9^th Annual Heroes of Hope Awards Celebration on Tuesday, November 19, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. This event honors our everyday community leaders. These individuals, agencies, and businesses contribute to and support youth development, family and individual empowerment, the Archdiocese of Louisville’s Office of Multicultural Ministry and its Catholic Enrichment Center. The honorees are: James Alexander-JenCare Senior Medical Center; Raoul Cunningham-NAACP Louisville Branch; Dorothy Ernest-Christ the King Catholic Church, Civic & Religious Leadership; Donna Holmes-St. Augustine Catholic Church, Civic & Religious Leadership; Louise Penman-St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church, Civic & Religious Leadership; and Jackie Stamps-Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Civic & Religious Leadership. ACT/SAT Test Prep

The Catholic Enrichment Center of the Archdiocese of Louisville’s Office of Multicultural Ministry will offer ACT/SAT Test Prep Sessions again this year on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. The center is located at 3146 West Broadway, Louisville, KY 40211. The 1^st date is Saturday, December 7, 2019. The next session dates are February 1 and June 6, 2020. The classes are FREE!! These dates coincide with the next national ACT/SAT test dates which are: December 14, 2019; April 4, 2020; June 13, 2020; and July 18, 2020. The test is not offered at the CEC. Ngoma Movement Series

 “Ngoma is Swahili for dance”. “The dance is a poem of which each movement is a word.” - Mata Hari. The Office of Multicultural Ministry’s Catholic Enrichment Center now offers dance classes. They include a variety of dance styles. They take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. with Tuesdays assigned as the Performance Class for children of all ages, Wednesdays focusing on Technique for students 6-years and up, and Thursdays for students 3-5 years of age. Space is limited, and you must sign-up. The cost is $25.00 a series (6-weeks = 1 series). Appropriate dance attire is required and is the financial responsibility of the parent. Enhanced After School Tutoring Program & Cultural Institute

Our students are coming home these days with more questions, fewer books and the achievement gap continues to increase. The Office of Multicultural Ministry’s Catholic Enrichment Center is offering homework assistance and basic academic review for students in grades K-12 to assist in bridging that gap. Students will be exposed to alternative learning exercises provided by experienced educators along with participating in the Cultural Institute. Tutoring is offered Monday through Thursday from 4:30 p.m. – 7:45 p.m. The Cultural Institute offerings are as follows: Family Sewing (Mondays…6:00 p.m.  - 7:00 p.m.); Dance, 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. (Tuesdays-Performance Class, Wednesdays-Technique Class, 6-years old & up & Thursdays-Technique Class, 3-5 years old); and Arts and Crafts (Tuesdays…4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.). The daily tutoring sessions are by appointment only and must be scheduled in advance. The program cost is $25 per month per child. Computers are available free of charge to do homework. Dog of the Week: Tricia is a spunky, very happy Beagle-Blue Heeler mix would a great companion for a retiree or someone who works from home. Tricia is a top-notch snuggler that loves to burrow under the covers to sleep with you. She's always ready for a walk or playing fetch with her stuffed toys. The easy-going sweetheart gets along with cats and dogs, so she wouldn’t mind a fur sibling. Plus, she has excellent manners and she’s house trained! Tricia is approximately 3-years-old and weighs about 25lbs. Her adoption fee is waived thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. Tricia’s already spayed, microchipped and vaccinated. Crime Mapping

First Division

Major Andy McClinton Andrew McClinton began his career in law enforcement on January 22, 2001 with the former Louisville Division of Police (LPD). As a patrol officer, he served in the former Sixth District (LPD) and First Division. As a detective, he served in the First Division Flex Platoon and in the Criminal Intelligence Unit. He was also a member of the Dignitary Protection Team for three (3) years. After being promoted to Sergeant in 2008, he served in the First Division, Robbery Unit, Professional Standards Unit and the Public Integrity Unit. In 2016, he was promoted to Lieutenant and worked in the Third Division and Administrative Services.  In 2017, McClinton was promoted to Major and commanded the Administrative Services Division. Major McClinton holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Political Science from Hanover College. He is a graduate of the Academy of Police Supervision at Eastern Kentucky University and the 136th Session of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officer’s Course at the University of Louisville. Major McClinton is married with two (2) children.

Second Division

Major Ryan Bates Bates began his law enforcement career in August 1997 with the Louisville Division of Police. He served in the former Second, Fourth, and Sixth Districts. He was also a member of the Street Crimes Unit and the Gang Squad. After merger, Bates served as a patrol officer in the First Division. He was promoted to sergeant in August 2005. He served as a sergeant in the Second Division where he supervised the mid-watch platoon, FLEX Unit, and Detectives Unit. In 2012, Bates was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Fourth Division. He also served in the Second Division, where he supervised the mid-watch platoon and Division Resource Officers (DROs).   After being promoted to the rank of major, Bates commanded the Fourth Division. Major Bates served on the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team for 14 years. He served on the SWAT Team as an officer, sergeant, and lieutenant. He was appointed as the Assistant Commander in 2012 and Commander in 2015. Bates has also served on two (2) task forces which were created to address violent crime in the community. Major Bates is a graduate of Xavier University and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Business. He is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officers Course.

Fourth Division

Major Tim Burkett Major Tim Burkett began his career with the former Louisville Division of Police (LPD) in 1999 . He was a patrol officer and division detective in the former Fourth District. Additionally, he was a Sex Crimes detective and served on the Dignitary Protection Team (DPT). In 2007, Burkett was promoted to sergeant where he was a patrol sergeant and a division detective sergeant in the Eighth Division. In 2010, Burkett was promoted to lieutenant and commanded the Property Room. He also served as a Special Events lieutenant in the Special Operations Division. While in the Special Events Unit, he was responsible for planning and operating medium to large scale special events. He has been part of the command group for the PGA Championship, the Ironman Triathlon, Thunder over Louisville, the National Rifle Association (NRA) National Convention and many other events. He has been the lead on numerous events including marathons, parades, Muhammad Ali's Memorial Service and the world renowned Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby. After being promoted to major, Burkett commanded the Special Operations Division Major Burkett holds a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice with a cognate in Public Administration. He was a Dean's Scholar graduate of the University of Louisville's Southern Police Institute Administrative Officers Course. He is a certified instructor with the Commonwealth of Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training
