The aim of the study is to develop a design plan for historic Eastern Parkway that improves safety for all users (drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists and bus riders) while honoring the parkway’s original design, intent and beauty.

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is offering pre-registration October 2 to 31 for Jefferson County residents who are elderly (60 years or older) or disabled and receive a fixed income (Social Security, SSI, pension or Black Lung benefits).

This pre-registration phase is for the LIHEAP Subsidy Program, meaning eligible residents can apply regardless of the status of their utility bills. For required documentation or to schedule an appointment, visit this website. 

The Schnitzelburg and Meriwether neighborhoods will be participating in a tree planting with Louisville Grows. This will be the third planting for Schnitzelburg and the first for Meriwether. In addition to large trees, emphasis will be on right of way trees for Shelby Street and Burnett Avenue. The planting is scheduled for December 7, with Citizen Forester training on October 26. Louisville Grows and neighborhood volunteers will begin canvassing our neighbors soon to identify Treecipients.

TreesLouisville has partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation to provide 1500+ trees to Jefferson County residents since January. We are currently in our second round of the Community Canopy program which allows residents to enter their address, outline their house, and choose the right tree for their home to maximize the benefits of a healthy ecosystem such as lowering utility bills, managing stormwater runoff, and improving air quality. Your tree will either be shipped to you later this Fall or larger sizes will be available at Against the Grain Brewery on October 20 as part of our first annual Twigs and Swigs Celebration or Americana Community Center on November 9. 

Louisville loses around 820 acres of tree canopy on a yearly basis and this is one of the ways we try to restore tree canopy across the county. The program is available to all residents of Jefferson County but residents in the following zip codes will be able to reserve two trees because certain areas of the county have been affected more heavily and we want to improve our lowest canopy areas more quickly:

Mayor Greg Fischer has declared climate change an emergency, and in addition to current environmental efforts, the city is preparing for the drastic effects that climate change will bring if significant action is not taken on a more global scale.

Louisville Metro Government’s Office of Advanced Planning and Sustainability is developing a Climate Adaptation Plan to address and prepare for the existing and anticipated effects of climate change on the city and is seeking public input about residents’ experiences, concerns, and ideas.

Louisville is experiencing more rain than in the past and major floods, and the number of hot summer days is rising. Winter temperatures swing between record warm and cold days and winter storms are intensifying. Extreme weather puts people at risk, disrupts daily life, impacts city services, damages roads and buildings, and is costing us more than ever.

Residents are encouraged to attend one of three upcoming open houses to talk about how climate change is affecting them and explore tactics to combat it. The open houses will include a brief presentation from consultant Climate Access, to open the sessions, which will be held at the following times and locations:

As Louisville Metro Government works to address budget constraints caused by the increasing state pension obligation and lack of new revenue, Louisville Parks and Recreation today issued a request for proposals (RFP) for management, operation, and maintenance of its ten golf courses.

The city is accepting proposals until October 15, when the process will be closed, and the proposals will be evaluated. Interested parties can learn more about the solicitation including deadline dates and requirements at the city’s procurement web page. The accepted proposals may include lease, hybrid or concession options.

Louisville Parks and Recreation golf courses are Metro-owned and currently managed independently by PGA professionals whose contracts expire at the end of 2019 – except for Quail Chase where the contract expires December 31, 2024. The state alcoholic beverage licenses for the PGA professionals expire at the end of October.

Deed restrictions on the golf course properties ensure that nine of the ten Metro-owned golf courses must remain public spaces and used for recreational purposes, meaning that they will not be turned over for commercial or real-estate development. Bobby Nichols Golf Course in southwest Louisville is the only course with no such restriction.

The city issued a request for information (RFI) this spring to gauge interest and gather ideas for use of Metro’s golf course properties.  The responses to the RFI helped in the development of the RFP being released.

Once you’ve filled out your ballot, someone must take your ballot back to the Board of Elections before 6 p.m. on Election Day

Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) families and community members are encouraged to attend a Community Forum and Information Fair hosted by the Jefferson County Board of Education on Oct.ober 1, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Gheens Academy, 4425 Preston Highway, on the campus of Louisville Male High School. During the event, families will be able to:

• Provide feedback about the district’s student assignment plan.
• Share ideas and input on what the four new schools (an elementary school along West Broadway, an elementary school in Newburg, an elementary school along the Dixie corridor, and a middle school in the east end) should look like before construction begins.

The Community Forum and Information Fair is an added opportunity for the community to be involved in and informed about the transformative work happening in JCPS. During the event, families will also be able to meet with school board members and district leadership.

Additionally, more than a dozen JCPS team members will be available to answer questions and provide information to families about several topics, including the JCPS Backpack of Success Skills, nutrition services, racial equity, school culture and climate, student supports and transportation services.

Louisville’s homeless population will have an opportunity to access services, information and assistance in a one-stop environment at the 2019 Project Homeless Connect/VA Stand Down, on Wednesday, October 2. Resources available at the event will include food, clothing, medical evaluations, help with employment, education and benefit services, State ID’s, and many other forms of assistance. 

The event takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. (entry doors will close at 1 p.m.) at The Salvation Army (Old Male High School) campus at 911 S. Brook Street in Louisville. Several TARC buses will provide access throughout the day from emergency shelters to the event site at no cost, courtesy of TARC. The event is coordinated by the Robley Rex Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services, Coalition for the Homeless and other community partners including The Salvation Army. 

The Project Homeless Connect/VA Stand Down (PHC/Stand Down) is an annual one-day community outreach project where representatives from community service organizations come together to address the collective needs of the homeless during a single visit. This event is made possible by the work of hundreds of volunteers and resources from the Robley Rex VAMC, Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs, Louisville Metro Government, Coalition for the Homeless, and Louisville Metro Council. 

The latest numbers from the 2018 Homeless Census indicate 6986 individuals were homeless at some point in Louisville last year -- either on the streets, in homeless shelters or accessing services through Louisville’s homeless service providers. A variety of factors can lead to homelessness and often these individuals may be victims of domestic violence, disabled, veterans or senior citizens. 

At last year’s event more than 400 persons participated receiving a variety of individual services including State of KY ID cards, flu shots and other medical exams and services, housing linkages, mainstream benefit access (SSI/SSDI), clothing, food and general case management services. The “Stand Down” event, named for the military concept of renewal, personal care, etc., is replicated from a national service delivery model that has proven to be crucial in eliminating barriers to housing, employment, education and the myriad of other factors that contribute to long-term homelessness. 

“This is a vital event for our community because it allows our service providers to connect much-needed resources to our homeless residents," stated Eric Friedlander, director of the city’s Office of Resilience and Community Services.  “It also allows us a great opportunity to measure the needs of our homeless population so that we can come together to be more responsive”.  

Offered again this year will be a foot-washing service provided by community volunteers and the Coalition for the Homeless. Many individuals experiencing homelessness have issues with their feet due to diabetes, frostbite and other exposure issues. Every participant at Project Homeless Connect/Stand Down will be invited to soak their feet and have them examined by medical volunteers.

The Canoemobile is coming back to Shawnee and Riverview Parks on October 4 and 5 for its eighth year on the banks of the Ohio River. The Canoemobile allows residents ages three and older to take guided trips in 24-foot canoes on the Ohio River. Canoe trips are free. Participants under the age of 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian in order to participate. No advance sign-ups are required.

If you're renovating or remodeling, have a plan for disposing of the resulting debris. Construction and demolition debris in Louisville garbage and junk pickup collection is prohibited by ordinance, so hiring a hauling company or renting a dumpster may be in order.

From the Solid Waste Management division of Louisville Metro Public Works: To handle the high volume and get collection on schedule, we shifted the daily start time of yard waste collection. Crews are now starting out on their yard waste collection routes at noon instead of the previous 6 a.m. start time. That creates a better match between the availability of yard waste collection workers and equipment.

The new schedule means the regular yard waste collection schedule will extend into the evening. However, residents should continue to set yard waste out by the morning of collection day. If yard waste has not been collected by 8 p.m. on the assigned day, residents should contact Metro311 the following morning at 311 or 574-5000.

The new RecycleCoach app features notifications about garbage, recycling, bulk waste, and yard waste collection services. 

RecycleCoach will help Solid Waste Management Services communicate better by sending special messages such as bulk waste rule reminders or suspension of services for yard waste, etc.

The app also has a “what goes where” feature to allow a person to input a certain item to get information on disposal or recycling.  Download from the App Store or Google Play.

The Center for Neighborhoods' NeighborMap comes loaded with data on neighborhood resources, grocery access, flood-plain locations, tree cover and more. NeighborMap can help individuals and community organizations visualize and understand the assets available in their neighborhoods, and identify improvements they would like to see.

Students from UofL's Kent School of Social Work contributed to the project by gathering data in urban neighborhoods, and will continue the partnership with CFN to help develop strong neighborhoods. NeighborMap was created in part with funding from Louisville Metro Government.

Information about medical history, allergies to medication, number of residents in a home and even a picture of the family dog can all be added to a Safety Profile.
