About Garvin Gate Blues Festival

The Garvin Gate Blues Festival began in 1988 in the Rudyard Kipling parking lot as a blues jam in Old Louisville that quickly outgrew the parking lot. At that time the Garvin Place Association was expanding its boundaries to become the Garvin Place Neighborhood Association and offered to host the growing event. Some of the legendary blues musicians that have performed at the Garvin Gate Blues Festival throughout the years include Bob Margolin-Muddy Waters’ guitar player and Big Bill Morganfield, Muddy’s son, Billy Flynn’s Chicago Blues Party featuring Elmo James, Jr. and Milwaukee Slim, Lil’ Ed and the Blues Imperials, Nora Jean Wallace, Grady Champion, Karen Lovely, Sugar Blue, Lurrie Bell and Eddy Clearwater. Proceeds benefit The Garvin Gate Neighborhood Association and the Old Louisville neighborhood.

Garvin Gate Blues Festival returns to “The Gate” for its 25^th year on Friday, October 11 & Saturday, October 12. Known as the largest free street music festival in Louisville, Garvin Gate Blues Festival celebrates blues, the arts and culture.

In 2016, Garvin Gates Blues Festival and Kentuckiana Blues Society launched Blues In The Schools, a youth music education program. Blues In The Schools aims to educate elementary school students about the blues music genre, focusing on blues music and performers who have Louisville roots or influences. Sponsored by the Kentuckiana Blues Society, Facilities Management Services, Garvin Gate Blues Festival and Down In The Alley Records, this year’s Blues In The Schools presenters are Mark “Big Poppa” Stampley and Gino Simpson. Building on past successes, Blues In The Schools 2019 strives to teach students that music is not difficult to learn and can be understood at any age or by anyone. Students will learn how Blues music has influenced other music genres, such as Rock & Roll, Punk Rock, Rap, and Hip Hop. The program will also illustrate the importance of the harmonica and guitar in Blues music through a live music presentation by Mark “Big Poppa” Stampley and Gino Simpson, followed by a lesson on how to write a simple blues song and play the harmonica.

WHERE:  The Norton Sports Health 10K will start and finish on the Egg Lawn at The Parklands of Floyds Fork.

WHAT:  The Norton Sports Health 10K is the second race in the Louisville Sports Commission's Fall Runathon series. This is a family-friendly race that showcases a scenic course at The Parklands of Floyds Fork.   Children are encouraged to take part in the Kids Fun Run, which is scheduled to start at approximately 9:10 a.m. (immediately following the start of the 10K) from the same start line. The Fun Run is a free 3/4 mile loop around the Egg Lawn, and all participating children will receive a finisher's medal. Registration is not required.

New Directions Housing Corporation is celebrating 50 year of combating housing insecurity with a new home! 

October 13th at  Saint William Catholic Church  Of course, you can't talk about the history of New Directions without remembering that its roots are firmly planted at Saint William Catholic Church. On October 13th, as part of the 50th Anniversary Celebration, a blessing for New Directions will be said during 9:00 a.m. Mass at Saint William’s at 1226 West Oak Street in Louisville.

October 24th Ribbon Cutting at Maple Street  Then, join us on October 24^th as the 50^th Anniversary Celebration continues with a ribbon-cutting at our new home, 1617 Maple Street. A 3:00 p.m. gathering will include brief remarks by Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer, followed by a reception and tours of the new office space!

December 12th Farewell to Casa Grisanti On December 12^th, with the move to Maple Street complete, it’s time for New Directions to say farewell to its longtime office, in the building which formerly housed the Casa Grisanti restaurant. An After-Hours reception will be held at “Casa”, 1000 East Liberty Street, from 5:30 -7:30 p.m., where those who have had a part in this extraordinary journey can say goodbye to this beloved location and celebrate another 50 years of good works ahead for New Directions.

Dog of the Week: Matilda’s a spunky, young pup that would be a great companion for most families. The approximately 1-year-old Labrador Retriever is well-behaved, friendly and is easy to leash walk. Matilda also knows several basic commands and loves to play games! Toss a tennis ball and she’ll chase it, but then it’s your turn give chase. That’s how the game is played, according to Matilda! Adopt this fun-loving girl for free with an approved application, thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. Matilda weigh about 55lbs. She’s already spayed, vaccinated and microchipped! Cat of the Week: Turner is ready to live the life of a spoiled housecat! The handsome, silver cat with big green eyes is approximately 2-years-old and weighs about 12lbs. Turner’s adoption fee is waived for an approved adopter, thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. The friendly cat is already neutered, microchipped and vaccinated.
