Last day to register or change your voting information is Monday, October 7  4 PM!

Need a ride to polls on Election Day? A. Philip Randolph Institute (502.774.4834) provides free rides. Lyft and Uber may be giving reduced rides to the polls, or call your local party headquarters.

If you become sick or are in the hospital, you can still vote with an Emergency Medical Ballot. Request a paper absentee ballot between Tuesday, October 22 and Tuesday, November 5. Call your local Board of Election office to get an Emergency Medical Ballot. You will have to find someone to notarize your application for a ballot and then take that application to the Board of Elections to get your ballot. Once you’ve filled out your ballot, someone must take your ballot back to the Board of Elections before 6 PM on Election Day!

Southwest Community Ministries, along with Kosair Charities, is offering an assistance program to help children in need get eye glasses! No one in the community should have live without seeing the world in crystal clear clarity, especially children. The ministries are able to offer up to $120 per child, covering the cost of two pairs of eye glasses. This is an amazing program that can help countless families provide something that many of us take for granted. Dare to Care Mobile Pantry New Location Serving SW Jefferson County

The Dare to Care Mobile Pantry has a new location! This amazing program ensures that families can access food regardless of where they live. Dare to Care brings food directly to a neighborhood and sets up a temporary pantry on a consistent, scheduled basis. Today, Dare to Care operates over 40 Mobile Pantries each month. These pantries provide nearly 275,000 pounds of nutritious food to our neighbors in need each year. This particular pantry is located at Sacred Heart Wayside (3101 Wayside Dr.) and services residents from the 40216, 40258 and 40272 area codes. The pantry will be at this location the second Monday of every month from 1:30 p.m. until they run out of food. If you have any questions or concerns please contact (502) 966-3821.

“Land Use Planning & Air Quality” is the topic of September 16 Clearing The Air workshop

• The next installment of the Clearing The Air workshop series will be “Land Use Planning & Air Quality.”
• The Monday, September 16, workshop will examine how air pollution can be impacted by the community planning process and land use policy. The workshop is 6-7:30 p.m. at the Louisville Free Public Library, 301 York St. It is free and open to the public.
• The purpose of Clearing The Air is to give the public a look at everything from the science of air pollution to the laws and regulations that protect our health from harmful emissions. The 90-minute workshops are being held monthly through November.
• “No matter who you are or where you live in Louisville, air quality affects you,” said APCD Environmental Coordinator Torend Collins, who is overseeing the workshop series. “It’s important for APCD to provide information and access to resources that can help the community better understand what goes into keeping our air clean.”
• This is the second year for the Clearing The Air workshop series. Remaining dates for upcoming workshops are September 16, October 21, and November 18.

Meals on Wheels Delivery takes about an hour weekly, twice a month if you prefer to deliver two days/month. We have a Tuesday route that departs from Sun Valley Community Center (10:00 am) or a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday route departing from Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital in the afternoon (3:30). Addiction Recovery Services Available through Volunteers of America

Volunteers of America have recently opened new addiction recovery locations to better serve the community. They have several programs at 1436 South Shelby Street. Freedom House is a residential program for pregnant and parenting women. Shelby Men’s Recovery Center is also located on South Shelby. This is a 90 day residential program for men, where clients are able to work while seeking treatment. They have Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and services for men, women and families. These services are available at 2500 West Broadway and 4303 W Broadway. Transitional Housing will be available in July for homeless women with children who would like to continue their sobriety at 4303 W Broadway If you are know someone who may be interested in VOA’s programs, please contact the intake office at 502-635-4530. They’re able to do a quick screening, verify their insurance, and set up an intake date and time.

Work Along the River Jordan: African American River Labor in the Ohio Valley Sunday September 15

• 9/15/2019 - 2:00pm to 3:00pm

• Join us at Riverside, the Farnsley-Moremen Landing for "Work Along the River Jordan: African American River Labor in the Ohio Valley, and the Development of Black America" presented by Dr. David Ross Anderson of the University of Louisville. Dr. Anderson will examine the economic and social importance of African American river workers along the Ohio River in the 19th century. Enslaved and free workers were vital to a growing western economy, but also connected African Americans across hundreds of miles, contributed to the growth of urban black communities such as in Louisville, and often aided in escapes.  This talk will examine the role that river workers played in the development of modern black America.

RECYCLING & SUSTAINABILITY INFORMATION

FREE Shredding, Drug Toss & E-Cycle  On Saturday, September 14 f 9:00 a.m. – Noon East Louisville Sunrise Rotary Club will host a Fall E-Cycle Event Aiken and Shelbyville Road, in Middletown. Items accepted are electronics (batteries, electronics, non-tube televisions, CRT monitors ($5 each for monitors)), paper documents for shredding onsite, old shoes for WaterStep, and prescription and over the counter drugs for safe disposal. Donations are welcome. 100% of the proceeds go to the Rotary Foundation.

FREE TREES Provided by Trees Louisville in Partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation

TreesLouisville is a nonprofit organization focused on restoring urban tree canopy in Louisville.  They are partnering with the Arbor Day Foundation to provide 1500free trees to Louisville residents.  Louisville loses around 54,000 trees annually and this is one way we can help restore our depleted canopy.  To participate go to arborday.org/treeslouisville, type in your address, and choose your tree! Trees will either be shipped to your home or you can pick up a larger tree at one of our two events.  Pickup events are scheduled for October 20, 12pm-4pm at Against the Grain Brewery, 401 E Main St, Louisville, KY 40202 or November 9, 10am-2pm at Americana Community Center 4801 Southside Dr, Louisville, KY 40214. This is the second of four seasonal Community Canopy programs.  Last winter 870 free trees were delivered to residents of Louisville and the goal is to provide more than 3,500 free trees over the next two years.  The following species are available: American Sycamore, Black Tupelo, Serviceberry, Redbud, Kentucky Coffeetree, Overcup Oak, Shadblow Serviceberry, Swamp White Oak, Sweetbay Magnolia, and Tulip Poplar

Free Recycling Stations

If you do not have residential curbside recycling service or if you have too much for your bin/cart, we have free recycling drop-off locations around the county for your convenience. Some are staffed by Public Works employees to help with drop-off. Others are self-serve. Here's an interactive map of the drop-off locations. What you can drop off: Self-service and full-service locations: Flattened cardboard Paper containers and cups Milk, juice and soup cartons Newspapers/inserts, phone books, magazines, junk mail, office paper Plastic bottles, cups, and containers Glass bottles and jars Metal bottles and cans Full-service locations also accept: Used motor oil and filters Used anti-freeze Used cooking oil Do’s and Don’ts Recyclable items at self-service locations may be mixed. They should be loose in the dumpster, not in bags. Items at full-service locations must be separated by material. Staff members will help unload. No dumping. Take up to three large items to the Waste Reduction Center free of charge. No liquids/paints/oils/etc. in the Self-Service dumpsters. Flatten cardboard to save space in the dumpster. If the dumpster is full, contact Metro311. The crews empty them on a schedule based on how long it typically takes to fill, but sometimes they get full sooner than expected

Pet Safety Reminders

91.002 RESTRAINT REQUIRED All animals, excluding community cats, shall be kept under restraint at all times, as defined in this chapter, except as otherwise provided herein, and any deviation or violation thereof is strictly prohibited.

91.010 SANITARY DISPOSAL OF ANIMAL FECES REQUIRED. It shall be unlawful for any owner or person in charge of a domestic animal or other four-footed mammal, poultry or other fowl to permit such animal to be on school grounds, metro parks or other public property, or on any private property other than that of the owner or person in charge or control of such animal without the permission of the owner of said property, or on any streets, sidewalks, highways, or rights-of-way of the Metro Government other than duly designated bridle paths, unless the owner or person in charge of such animals: Has, in his or her possession, a suitable device for the picking up, collection and proper sanitary disposal of the animal feces or manure. Immediately removes all feces deposited by such animal(s) and disposes of same in a sanitary manner.

Feeding Stray Cats?  Alley Cat Advocates can help get outdoor cats fixed and vaccinated at NO COST TO YOU!    Cat Caretakers living in the following Jefferson County zip codes 40208, 40209, 40213, 40214, 40215, 40216, 40217, 40219, 40258 and 40272 are eligible  for spay/neuter services for unowned community cats,  They will be vaccinated, spayed/neutered, treated for flea and ear-mite medicine, given a great vet visit, ear-tipped (the universal symbol of a neutered cat) and returned. When there are no more kittens; the number of cats gradually goes down  and annoying behaviors such as yowling, fighting, spraying stop.
