Councilwoman Welch Appointed to Vice Chair of National League of Cities’ 2012 Human Development Steering Committee

NLC
I am excited to announce I have been appointed Vice Chair of the National League of Cities’ 2012 Human Development Steering Committee. The Human Development Committee is responsible for developing policy positions on issues involving social
services, children and learning, poverty and income support, employment and workforce development, equal opportunity, Social Security and seniors, individuals with disabilities, public health care, mental health parity and immigration reform. As a member of this committee, I will have the opportunity to play a key role in shaping the National League of City’s policy positions while advocating on behalf of cities throughout the country as well as residents here in Louisville.
I am honored and look forward to the challenge of leadership for this committee that sends resolutions to our federal government on issues affecting our cities and towns. Louisville Metro has much to offer other cities with our many innovative programs initiated to improve the quality of life for our residents. And I can learn from other elected officials across our nation about their solutions to some of our shared problems. Please visit www.nlc.org for more information on the National League of Cities.

Center for Neighborhoods Celebrates 40 Years in Louisville – 2 Weeks Left to Register

CFN
Center For Neighborhoods is excited to celebrate its 40th year in the Louisville community working with the greatest neighborhoods, neighborhood leaders and neighbors anywhere!
Neighborhood Institute began in 1987 with a class of 16 neighborhood leaders conducted at Walnut Street Baptist Church.  Since then, the NI has graduated over 900 people from all 26 Metro Council districts and So. Indiana.  The Neighborhood Institute continues its purpose to equip neighborhood leaders with skills and resources needed to initiate positive change in the community through their neighborhood groups, small cities, condo and homeowner associations. Neighborhood Institute graduates have been vital to making Louisville the City of Neighborhoods.
If you have not attended the Neighborhood Institute, become a part of Louisville's legacy of effective neighborhood leaders, creating a better quality of life for all of us. Space is limited and there are 2 weeks left to register! Meetings are held each Tuesday night from February 7th - April 24th, 2012 at Kosair Charities Community Room, 982 Eastern Parkway. Dinner is provided. Click here for a brochure with additional information. Click here for an application.

LMAS Waives Late Fees for Pet Licensing

LMAS
Louisville Metro Animal Services has begun waiving all late fees thru February 29th for cats, dogs and ferrets whose licenses have either lapsed or have never been purchased.
“Licensing your pet is extremely important and it’s the law,” said Louisville Metro Animal Services Director Justin Scally. “If you ever lose your pet, licensing can help you reunite.  License numbers provide our staff with your contact information. If a Metro Animal Control Officer finds a roaming dog or cat with a license, the officer may be able to provide your pet a free ride home.”

Citizens can license their altered pets for $9 and unaltered for $50. The late license amnesty can save people a great deal and is an opportunity that shouldn’t be missed.  Late fees can range from $47.50 for altered animals to $195.00 for unaltered animals. LMAS uses funding from licenses to support operations.  Staff takes care of stray pets, investigates public safety threats as it relates to animals and investigates allegations of animal cruelty/neglect.
License your pet today at either Metro Animal Services location: (Please bring a copy of your pet’s rabies certificate)

TARC Announces Service Improvements

TARC is making schedule adjustments on two routes to improve service and adding two trips to another route to address overcrowding. The changes take effect January 29th and include Route #18-Preston-18th Street: One trip westbound will be added leaving Fern Valley and Ulrich roads at 2:07 p.m. and heading to Dixie Highway and Heaton Road only.. A return trip from Heaton Road to Preston Street at Broadway, leaving at 3:31 p.m., will also be added. Both trips are designed to address overcrowding on Route #18, which travels Dixie and Preston highways and connects downtown on Market Street (eastbound) and Jefferson Street (westbound).  Buses arrive at least every 15 minutes from 6 a.m. – 9 p.m. on weekdays on the main sections of this heavily used route.

Routes #22 and #43 will also see changes. Route #22- 22nd Street:  Scheduled bus arrival times at stops will change slightly to better reflect operating conditions as a result of the Sherman-Minton Bridge closing.  Adjustments will be, on average, no more than a few minutes compared to the current schedule. Route #43-Poplar Level Road:  Bus arrival times at stops will change slightly on schedules to more accurately reflect operating conditions. Bus arrival times will not vary from the current schedule, in most cases, more than a few minutes.
