LMPD reminder: Please secure your property

There have been 212 stolen vehicle reports in the last month. LMPD reminds you to lock your vehicle, and never leave valuables in plain sight. This includes any and all keys, key fobs and firearms. Do not leave your vehicle running unattended.

Yard waste collection delayed 

Solid Waste Management Services reports that due to equipment shortages, yard waste collection is behind schedule this week and will be until additional equipment is available. Residents should set out yard waste on the usual day at the usual time, though collection may be one to two days behind schedule. 

This message was also distributed through the Recycle Coach app, which is available for free on the App Store or Google Play. 

It's mosquito season - help prevent breeding grounds

From the Department of Health and Wellness:

Our team has pretreated all MSD catch basins as well as all 305 historically known flood-prone areas. We also continue to trap and test mosquitoes for diseases. We will continue this throughout the summer and implement fogging when necessary.

Property owners who are experiencing a surge in mosquitoes are encouraged to reach out to private contractors to assist with mosquito control. Of course people can also call Metro Call, 311, to make mosquito complaints which we will investigate and respond appropriately.

It's important that homeowners prevent mosquitoes by ridding their homes of standing water, a prime mosquito breeding ground. We have more helpful information on our website, including ways to prevent mosquito bites, how to sign up for fogging alerts, and, when necessary, where we are fogging.

Bulky item collection guidelines are being enforced - know the rules

Project Pickup Large Item (Junk) collection happens three times each year in Louisville's Urban Services District. It's a great way to get rid of accumulated stuff that doesn't fit in the weekly trash or recycling. The poster above is a reminder of what is and is not picked up by this service.

Any Jefferson County resident may drop off up to three large household items at the Waste Reduction Center, 636 Meriwether Avenue, for FREE, year-round during regular business hours. Larger amounts are subject to a fee schedule.

Cedar Lake has suspended pick-up service but may resume in the future. 

JCPS free school supply events

Students across the Jefferson County Public School (JCPS) District will have an opportunity to receive free school supplies at a dozen back-to-school events scheduled throughout July and August. The events are sponsored by the JCPS Family Resource & Youth Services Centers and various community partners, including Neighborhood Place and the Louisville Metro Department of Community Services.

All of the back-to-school events are free and open to the public. Students must be accompanied by an adult to receive supplies, and supplies are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. School supplies, information and services vary by site.

Saturday, July 27, Kindergarten ReadyFest at Farnsley Middle, 3400 Lees Lane, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Kindergarten ReadyFest features music, games and other activities for students and their families. District 10 events

July 29 - 49th Annual Dainty Contest

The 49th Annual World Championship Dainty Contest will be Monday, July 29 on George Hauck Way (Hoertz Avenue) from 5 to 10 p.m. next to the former Hauck's Handy Store.  Schnitzelburg's famous street game of German origin is played with a wooden peg pointed on both ends and a long wooden stick.  Participants must be at least 45 years old, but the event is fun for all ages with food, drinks, and music. The person sending the peg the longest distance gets a trophy and the shortest distance gets a basket of lemons.  The dainty contest is sponsored by the Schnitzelburg Area Community Council and supported by many local residents. As always, proceeds from the Dainty Contest will be donated to the Little Sisters of the Poor. We're glad that this special tradition continues, despite the closure of Hauck's Handy Store.

August 6 - National Night Out

LMPD's Fourth Division presents the 36th annual “National Night Out” from 5 to 8 p.m. at Wyandotte Park, 1104 Beecher Street. There will be food, games, drug prevention activities, interaction with neighbors and local business owners, police officers and more!

From the Louisville Metro Police Department: LMPD's 6th Division invites everyone to National Night Out 2019! This year's event will be the best yet, and it's shaping up to be the largest gathering of vendors ever assembled in the program's history. We are partnering with LMPD's 7th Division again this year. The event will take place August 6 at the Jefferson Mall, 4801 Outer Loop from 6 to 8 p.m. Come out and bring a friend!  National Night Out began simply with neighbors turning on their porch lights and sitting in front of their homes. Today, it is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. Furthermore, it provides an opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

Free Forest School Returns to the Louisville Nature Center! Free Forest School of Louisville, Kentucky, is a local chapter of the nonprofit Free Forest School, www.freeforestschool.org. Fostering the next generation of environmental stewards, Free Forest School opens the door to nature play and emergent learning for thousands of children by empowering parents and caregivers to provide it themselves.

The Free Forest School chapter of Louisville, Ky. is a free, cooperative, volunteer-run group for children age 0 to 6 and their parents/caregivers that meets on a weekly basis throughout the year in nearby wilderness areas. We share a snack, take a hike, play in the woods, and have circle time. Parents and caregivers get a chance to unplug and step back... Kids and their imaginations take the lead! August 10 - Navigation: The Art of Finding Yourself Class This class, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., is geared toward seeing more wildlife by finding animal signs and reading what is going on in the forest. We will stretch our senses as we unlock natural mysteries to discover the survival strategies of those who live in the forest. Whether you are a birder, hunter, or nature enthusiast, this class has something for everyone. Ages 16 and up, $20 per person, register by August 8.

August 28 - Jim King MUSCL Senior Wellness Center Anniversary Party

Save the date for the Jim King MUSCL Senior Wellness Center's 12th anniversary party on August 28 at 11:30 a.m. Instead of a potluck, the center will serve fried chicken, coleslaw, mashed potatoes, green beans and cake for a $7 donation.  The Senior Wellness Center is at 1016 East Burnett Street in St. Elizabeth's Church.

Apply by August 5 - Learn to code and change your life

Louisville Skills is a technology training program that is designed to teach individuals the fundamentals of programming in a four month training period with a focus on preparing students for a career in technology. Once you graduate, you will have gained lifelong knowledge of programming and valuable tech expertise.

Interapt has pioneered several public/private partnerships in the city of Louisville, with JCPS, in Atlanta, and in Eastern Kentucky to help adults make life changes by learning coding and providing them the tools to land great jobs of the future. 

There is a new class for the Louisville Skills program forming, but you must apply by August 5. This program is targeting the West End of the city but is open to anyone in Jefferson County. 

Average potential earnings for graduates range from $35,000 out of the gate to $60,000 three years out of the program. Interapt will be selecting the top 30 applicants through an interview process from August through September.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance offers free off-season tax prep help

Although the 2018 tax filing season has ended, free help is available in preparing past due and amended tax returns. Now through October, the Louisville Asset Building Coalition’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) will provide federal and state income tax assistance to income eligible residents who need help filing prior returns. It is also still possible to receive a refund for returns from the years 2016 to 2018 for those who qualify. Taxpayers earning $66,000 or less can make an appointment with a VITA team member by calling 574-5687.

July 30 - Low Cost Rabies Vaccination Clinic

The LMAS Shelter is at max capacity and in an effort to reduce overcrowding, all redemption fees are waived for currently impounded stray pets the month of July. Anyone searching for a lost pet is asked to visit the LMAS Shelter located at 3705 Manslick Road to look for their cat or dog. Pet owners with no previous violations will receive amnesty. Owners are still responsible for the cost of vaccinations, licensing and a microchip. August 17 - Next Neighborhood Bike-In at Boone Square

Grab your bike and head to Boone Square on August 17 for a neighborhood Bike-In! Like a drive-in, but with bicycles, this FREE community event features live music, food, drinks and movies. (But you don't need to bring a bike to join in on the fun!)

Admission is free, all ages, rain or shine. Activities and Music start at 5 p.m., and the movie starts at dusk.

Guests will enjoy: a movie screening, live music, food and beverages from local vendors, and activities and games for kids of all ages.

July 28 - Juneteenth Jubilee 

This first community-wide Juneteenth Jubilee commemorates the final communication of the abolition of slavery in the United States on June 19, 1865. June 19th is “Juneteenth National Freedom Day” in Kentucky, in honor and reflection of the significant roles that African-Americans have played in the history of the United States. The Jubilee was rescheduled due to weather.  The new date of July 28th also holds a special significance because on July 28, 1868, the adoption of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was certified. The amendment grants citizenship to “all persons born or naturalized in the United States,” which included former slaves. The 2019 Juneteenth Jubilee will begin at 2nd and Main on the KFC Yum! Center Plaza with a community gathering in remembrance of the thousands of enslaved Africans sold at this site in the 1800s. Grand Marshal Ed Hamilton and the River City Drum Corp will lead participants through Downtown Louisville in a march for freedom to Waterfront Park. At the Lincoln Memorial, sculpted by Hamilton a decade ago, a sunset performance will celebrate freedom, featuring guest speakers reading excerpts of the Emancipation Proclamation embellished by artistic responses and other readings and performances by a number of poets, artists and groups.  For details on the Juneteenth Jubilee, click here.

August 8 - The Reluctant Radical - next Louisville Grows 2019 Film Series screening

The Louisville Grows Film Series is designed to promote discussions and mindfulness towards healthy living, healthy eating, environmental education and social justice. From utilizing fallen trees to exploring ecosystems to discovering the relationship between the food you eat and diseases, these films promise to inform and entertain.

The films will be shown every second Thursday of the month through August. Check out the Louisville Grows’ website and Facebook page for more information on the film featured each month. August 18 - next Clearing the Air seminar

the Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District's next “Clearing The Air” seminar is August 18.

The goal of “Clearing The Air” is to give the public an inside look at the APCD, everything from the science of air pollution to the laws and regulations that protect our health from harmful emissions.

The 90-minute workshops, which are held monthly, are free and at the Louisville Free Public Library, 301 York Street, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Although the smoggy, polluted skies of the 1970s are a distant memory, Louisville still must work to meet federal air quality standards. As a major industrial and logistics hub located in a heavily populated river valley, Louisville is challenged to control air pollution while maintaining a robust local economy.

One of the goals of “Clearing The Air” is to give the community a place to voice their concerns about air quality, said Michelle King, APCD Director of Program Planning.

“We know people have questions, but they don’t always know where to direct them,” King said. “This is an opportunity for person-to-person conversations with the professionals tasked with protecting air quality.” 

August 24 - Save the date for the third annual celebration of Women’s Equality Day 

The League of Women Voters Louisville, Metro Office For Women and Frazier History Museum are planning the 3rd Annual celebration of Women’s Equality Day on August 24. This gathering will honor the 99th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment when women finally won the right to vote. The event will be held at the Frazier History Museum and begins at 10 a.m. with networking and shopping; and the program will begin at 10:30 a.m. and end at 12:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Vote = Power is the theme. The program will touch on our past struggles, highlight our present challenges, urge us to plan for the future and inspire us to act now through our guest speakers Coline Jenkins, great-great granddaughter of American Suffragist and Abolitionist Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Hannah Drake, Author, Poet and Spoken Word Artist.

JustServe.org makes it easy to volunteer

JustServe.org is a free volunteer website dedicated to bringing communities together through volunteerism. From JustServe.org: Non-profits can post the need for volunteers and those in our community can go to the website and see all the opportunities to volunteer. Reminders from Solid Waste Management Services: 

If you're renovating or remodeling, have a plan for disposing of the resulting debris. Construction and demolition debris in Louisville garbage and junk pickup collection is prohibited by ordinance, so hiring a hauling company or renting a dumpster may be in order.  Options for disposal of construction and demolition debris include taking it to the Waste Reduction Center on Meriwether Avenue. Fees are variable depending on volume. More information and a fee schedule are available here.

Yard waste collection times will be later due to high volume

From the Solid Waste Management division of Louisville Metro Public Works: To handle the high volume and get collection on schedule, we shifted the daily start time of yard waste collection. Crews are now starting out on their yard waste collection routes at noon instead of the previous 6 a.m. start time. That creates a better match between the availability of yard waste collection workers and equipment. The new schedule means the regular yard waste collection schedule will extend into the evening. However, residents should continue to set yard waste out by the morning of collection day. If yard waste has not been collected by 8 p.m. on the assigned day, residents should contact Metro311 the following morning at 311 or 574-5000.

RecycleCoach app will help Louisville Metro customers with collection reminders, recycling information and more

The new RecycleCoach app features notifications about garbage, recycling, bulk waste, and yard waste collection services.  RecycleCoach will help Solid Waste Management Services communicate better by sending special messages such as bulk waste rule reminders or suspension of services for yard waste, etc. The app also has a “what goes where” feature to allow a person to input a certain item to get information on disposal or recycling.  Download from the App Store or Google Play.

Center for Neighborhoods' NeighborMap provides useful data

The Center for Neighborhoods' NeighborMap is now available online! This new, layered map comes loaded with data on neighborhood resources, grocery access, flood-plain locations, tree cover and more. NeighborMap can help individuals and community organizations visualize and understand the assets available in their neighborhoods, and identify improvements they would like to see. Students from UofL's Kent School of Social Work contributed to the project by gathering data in urban neighborhoods, and will continue the partnership with CFN to help develop strong neighborhoods. NeighborMap was created in part with funding from Louisville Metro Government.

Call 811 before you dig

Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) will investigate and impose fines on anyone who comes into contact with an underground natural gas line while digging without having contacted 811 to have the lines located before digging. Contact 811 (call 8-1-1 or submit an online locate request at 811.com) before you dig and make sure that anyone doing excavation on your behalf contacts 811 two working days before they start.  New LouieConnect site connects people to help

Louisville non-profits have launched a new website to help connect people in need of food, shelter and more. Metro United Way and the Family Scholar House partnered to create LouieConnect, modeling it on a similar site created in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When someone uses LouieConnect, the web-based app asks for basic information and then lists applicable resources nearby — from food pantries to shelters to career centers to financial literacy programs.

Discounted Recycle Carts will be available again soon for $28 for District 10 residents - in 95-gallon or 64 gallon size

With the new fiscal year underway July 1, Solid Waste Management Services (SWMS) will order new garbage and recycling carts. If you wish to request a cart, please do so now as there is an extensive backlog of requests, and SWMS estimates cart delivery may take a month. 

Councilman Mulvihill is committed to providing carts to District 10 residents at a reduced cost. These recycle carts will be available on a first come first served basis until the funds are depleted.  The photos at left show the sizes: 64 gallon on the left, 95 gallon on the right.

The carts normally cost $53, but Councilman Mulvihill has made them available for residents of District 10 for a reduced cost of $28. Please call 574-1110 or email us for the form. This offer is available to urban service district residents.

Those temporary, illegal signs in the right of way? Recycle them.

We receive complaints about signs that are illegally posted on poles and at intersections in the right-of-way, including "We Buy Houses," "Express Cash" and others.  If you walk by these signs or live somewhere where these signs are posted and may be removed safely, help clean up our community by taking them down and throwing them away. Or better yet, consider recycling the signs - search for "recycled yard sign projects" online for ideas.

Sign up for LENSAlert (Smart911)

Click here to sign up for the LENSAlert (Louisville Emergency Notification System).  In addition to receiving notifications, individuals can create a Safety Profile for themselves and their household that can include any information they want 9-1-1 and first responders to have in the event of an emergency. When individuals make an emergency call, their Safety Profile is automatically displayed to the 9-1-1 call taker, allowing them to send the right responders to the right location with the right information. Information about medical history, allergies to medication, number of residents in a home and even a picture of the family dog can all be added to a Safety Profile.
