Project Pickup Large Item (Junk) collection happens three times each year in Louisville's Urban Services District. It's a great way to get rid of accumulated stuff that doesn't fit in the weekly trash or recycling. The poster above is a reminder of what is and is not picked up by this service.

Another option

Any Jefferson County resident may drop off up to three large household items at the Waste Reduction Center, 636 Meriwether Avenue, for FREE, year-round during regular business hours. Larger amounts are subject to a fee schedule.

July 13 - Animal Tracking Basics Class at the Louisville Nature Center

Animal Tracking Basics Class at the Louisville Nature Center will be Saturday, July 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  This class is geared toward seeing more wildlife by finding animal signs and reading what is going on in the forest. We will stretch our senses as we unlock natural mysteries to discover the survival strategies of those who live in the forest. Whether you are a birder, hunter, or nature enthusiast, this class has something for everyone. Topics will include: Habits of awareness Animal senses and survival strategies Identifying and interpreting tracks How to make the most of your time outside Bird language Animal behavior How to research and make journals effectively Stalking (how to avoid being seen and heard) The class is $20 per person for ages 16 and up. August 28 - Jim King MUSCL Senior Wellness Center Anniversary Party

Save the date for the Jim King MUSCL Senior Wellness Center's 12th anniversary party on August 28 at 11:30 a.m. Instead of a potluck, the center will serve fried chicken, coleslaw, mashed potatoes, green beans and cake for a $7 donation.  The Senior Wellness Center is at 1016 East Burnett Street in St. Elizabeth's Church.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance offers free off-season tax prep help

Although the 2018 tax filing season has ended, free help is available in preparing past due and amended tax returns. Now through October, the Louisville Asset Building Coalition’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) will provide federal and state income tax assistance to income eligible residents who need help filing prior returns. It is also still possible to receive a refund for returns from the years 2016 to 2018 for those who qualify. Taxpayers earning $66,000 or less can make an appointment with a VITA team member by calling 574-5687.

Sylvester is a senior shelter kitty that still has a lot of love to give. The gray-and-white cat is friendly but sometime nervous because of the stressful kennel environment, so we recommend a calm, quiet home or Sylvester. July 11 to 16 - Volunteers needed for National Veterans Wheelchair Games 

The National Veterans Wheelchair Games is co-presented between the Department of Veterans Affairs and Paralyzed Veterans of America. The Games serve Veterans with Spinal Cord Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Amputations and other central neurological impairments with the goal to increase their independence, healthy activity and quality of life through wheelchair sports and recreation. Veterans are being exposed to wheelchair sports at their home VAMC or PVA Chapters as part of their rehabilitation to improve function, independence and getting them active in their home communities in sport and fitness.

The 39^th Games will be in Louisville July 11 to 16. The Games move from city to city annually to take advantage of the opportunities that educate Veterans on accessibility, travel, adaptation, etc. Additionally, moving the event annually helps introduce the program to new Veterans, sponsors and partners for the VA and PVA. Over the years we have seen the benefit of these relationships that strengthen opportunities for Veteran services but also for the greater disabled community in that area for years afterward.

The National Veterans Wheelchair Games has 19 different events that Veterans can choose to participate. Events such as Wheelchair Basketball, Softball, Swimming, Cycling, Power Lifting, Trap Shooting are just a few of the events that support this dynamic competition.

Through July 13 - Louisville hosts prestigious girls' travel basketball events

The Battle in the Boro – a bellweather of girls’ travel basketball tournaments – has returned to the Kentucky Expo Center (KEC) in Louisville through July 13.

During the Battle of the Boro, held July 10 to 13, competition will be among 7,000 players on 700 teams. All games will take place on 78 courts in KEC’s North Wing, South Wing and Freedom Hall. More than 700 hundred college coaches are expected for the Battle of the Boro.

Competition and practices will he held from 8:30 a.m. until approximately 9 p.m. every day with championship rounds held July 13. The general public is welcome to attend. Daily admission for adults is $20 and $55 for a weekend pass; admission for children 14 and under is $10 daily and $25 for a weekend pass.

July 28 - Juneteenth Jubilee 

This first community-wide Juneteenth Jubilee commemorates the final communication of the abolition of slavery in the United States on June 19, 1865. June 19th is “Juneteenth National Freedom Day” in Kentucky, in honor and reflection of the significant roles that African-Americans have played in the history of the United States. The Jubilee was rescheduled due to weather.  The new date of July 28th also holds a special significance because on July 28, 1868, the adoption of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was certified. The amendment grants citizenship to “all persons born or naturalized in the United States,” which included former slaves. The 2019 Juneteenth Jubilee will begin at 2nd and Main on the KFC Yum! Center Plaza with a community gathering in remembrance of the thousands of enslaved Africans sold at this site in the 1800s. Grand Marshal Ed Hamilton and the River City Drum Corp will lead participants through Downtown Louisville in a march for freedom to Waterfront Park. At the Lincoln Memorial, sculpted by Hamilton a decade ago, a sunset performance will celebrate freedom, featuring guest speakers reading excerpts of the Emancipation Proclamation embellished by artistic responses and other readings and performances by a number of poets, artists and groups.  For details on the Juneteenth Jubilee, click here.

August 8 - The Reluctant Radical - next Louisville Grows 2019 Film Series screening

From Louisville Grows:

The Louisville Grows Film Series is designed to promote discussions and mindfulness towards healthy living, healthy eating, environmental education and social justice. From utilizing fallen trees to exploring ecosystems to discovering the relationship between the food you eat and diseases, these films promise to inform and entertain.

The films will be shown every second Thursday of the month through August. Check out the Louisville Grows’ website and Facebook page for more information on the film featured each month. The Film Series will be at Healthy House, 1641 Portland Avenue. Doors open at 5:30, film starts at 6 p.m., with a panel discussion to follow. Admission is a $5 suggested donation. 

August 24 - Save the date for the third annual celebration of Women’s Equality Day 

The League of Women Voters Louisville, Metro Office For Women and Frazier History Museum are planning the 3rd Annual celebration of Women’s Equality Day on August 24. This gathering will honor the 99th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment when women finally won the right to vote. The event will be held at the Frazier History Museum and begins at 10 a.m. with networking and shopping; and the program will begin at 10:30 a.m. and end at 12:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. At the Board of Zoning Adjustment meeting Monday, July 8, a conditional use permit for a short term rental at a non-primary residence on 0.09850 acres in the R5 zoning district was denied to 1006 Mulberry Street by a vote of 3-2. This property was not in compliance with the ordinance that took effect on May 8, 2019, requiring a minimum distance of 600 feet between short term rentals approved by Conditional Use Permits. The 600-foot rule rule does not impact host-occupied rentals and rentals with non-residential zoning. The case number is 19CUP1009. 

At the same BOZA meeting Monday, a conditional use permit for a non-primary residence short term rental on 0.23820 acres in the R5 zoning district at 1914 Decatur Drive was approved unanimously. The case number is 19CUP1002. 

1137 Mulberry Street

18ZONE1017 for 1137 Mulberry Street, a change in zoning from R5 to CN for a proposed 3,170 square-foot three-story mixed use building on .11030 acres. This proposal was withdrawn.

JustServe.org makes it easy to volunteer

JustServe.org is a free volunteer website dedicated to bringing communities together through volunteerism. Reminders from Solid Waste Management Services: 

If you're renovating or remodeling, have a plan for disposing of the resulting debris. Construction and demolition debris in Louisville garbage and junk pickup collection is prohibited by ordinance, so hiring a hauling company or renting a dumpster may be in order.  Options for disposal of construction and demolition debris include taking it to the Waste Reduction Center on Meriwether Avenue. Fees are variable depending on volume. More information and a fee schedule are available here.

Yard waste collection times will be later due to high volume

From the Solid Waste Management division of Louisville Metro Public Works: To handle the high volume and get collection on schedule, we shifted the daily start time of yard waste collection. Crews are now starting out on their yard waste collection routes at noon instead of the previous 6 a.m. start time. That creates a better match between the availability of yard waste collection workers and equipment. The new schedule means the regular yard waste collection schedule will extend into the evening. However, residents should continue to set yard waste out by the morning of collection day. If yard waste has not been collected by 8 p.m. on the assigned day, residents should contact Metro311 the following morning at 311 or 574-5000.

RecycleCoach app will help Louisville Metro customers with collection reminders, recycling information and more

The new RecycleCoach app features notifications about garbage, recycling, bulk waste, and yard waste collection services.  RecycleCoach will help Solid Waste Management Services communicate better by sending special messages such as bulk waste rule reminders or suspension of services for yard waste, etc. The app also has a “what goes where” feature to allow a person to input a certain item to get information on disposal or recycling.  Download from the App Store or Google Play.

Center for Neighborhoods' NeighborMap provides useful data

The Center for Neighborhoods' NeighborMap is now available online! This new, layered map comes loaded with data on neighborhood resources, grocery access, flood-plain locations, tree cover and more. NeighborMap can help individuals and community organizations visualize and understand the assets available in their neighborhoods, and identify improvements they would like to see. Students from UofL's Kent School of Social Work contributed to the project by gathering data in urban neighborhoods, and will continue the partnership with CFN to help develop strong neighborhoods. NeighborMap was created in part with funding from Louisville Metro Government.

Call 811 before you dig

Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) will investigate and impose fines on anyone who comes into contact with an underground natural gas line while digging without having contacted 811 to have the lines located before digging. Contact 811 (call 8-1-1 or submit an online locate request at 811.com) before you dig and make sure that anyone doing excavation on your behalf contacts 811 two working days before they start.  New LouieConnect site connects people to help

Louisville non-profits have launched a new website to help connect people in need of food, shelter and more. Metro United Way and the Family Scholar House partnered to create LouieConnect, modeling it on a similar site created in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When someone uses LouieConnect, the web-based app asks for basic information and then lists applicable resources nearby — from food pantries to shelters to career centers to financial literacy programs.

Discounted Recycle Carts will be available again soon for $28 for District 10 residents - in 95-gallon or 64 gallon size

With the new fiscal year underway July 1, Solid Waste Management Services (SWMS) will order new garbage and recycling carts. If you wish to request a cart, please do so now as there is an extensive backlog of requests, and SWMS estimates cart delivery may take a month. 

Councilman Mulvihill is committed to providing carts to District 10 residents at a reduced cost. These recycle carts will be available on a first come first served basis until the funds are depleted.  The photos at left show the sizes: 64 gallon on the left, 95 gallon on the right.

The carts normally cost $53, but Councilman Mulvihill has made them available for residents of District 10 for a reduced cost of $28. Please call 574-1110 or email us for the form. This offer is available to urban service district residents.

Those temporary, illegal signs in the right of way? Recycle them.

We receive complaints about signs that are illegally posted on poles and at intersections in the right-of-way, including "We Buy Houses," "Express Cash" and others.  If you walk by these signs or live somewhere where these signs are posted and may be removed safely, help clean up our community by taking them down and throwing them away. Or better yet, consider recycling the signs - search for "recycled yard sign projects" online for ideas.

Sign up for LENSAlert (Smart911)

Click here to sign up for the LENSAlert (Louisville Emergency Notification System).  In addition to receiving notifications, individuals can create a Safety Profile for themselves and their household that can include any information they want 9-1-1 and first responders to have in the event of an emergency. When individuals make an emergency call, their Safety Profile is automatically displayed to the 9-1-1 call taker, allowing them to send the right responders to the right location with the right information. Information about medical history, allergies to medication, number of residents in a home and even a picture of the family dog can all be added to a Safety Profile.
