Des Pres Park Dog Run Update

As many of you know, I am an avid supporter of our parks system and have worked over the last few years to update the parks in District 18 and add some exciting amenities. I have secured funding to update the tennis courts, install pickle ball courts and a mini soccer court at Des Pres, as well as addressing other maintenance issues such as grass cutting and road paving.

A few months ago, when I began having a conversation with the Louisville Dog Run Association about the possibility of installing a dog run within a section of Des Pres Park, I truly believed it would be a nice amenity to add to our park. Dog parks throughout the city are extremely popular and the demand continues to grow.  I walked door to door in the areas surrounding Des Pres Park, I had three public meetings, I placed a survey in my e-newsletter, and communicated with residents over the phone and via email about this issue.

While the survey results and emails my office received show that around 52% of people who responded would be in favor of adding a dog run at the park, I have chosen not to move forward with the project and instead to look for another location. I asked for your opinions and your feedback was extremely valuable to me as I took all points of view under consideration. While I do believe the dog park would have been successful and heavily used, I had to consider the negative impact it would have on those who live in close proximity to the park.

I have already reached out to Metro Parks to address some of the additional maintenance concerns at Des Pres that were brought up at our various meetings and I will work to ensure that they are all addressed. I appreciate everyone who reached out to participate in this dialogue. It is an honor to serve as your representative on the Louisville Metro Council. Please don’t hesitate to contact my office if we can ever be of any assistance.
