Councilman Mulvihill met with officials from the Town of LaSalle, Ontario

Councilman Mulvihill lunched with visitors from the Town of LaSalle, Ontario, Canada on Thursday. The Town of LaSalle and Louisville have a French explorer in common: René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle. French settlers first established roots in what is now Ontario in the mid 1700s. La Salle ventured as far south as La Belle, a French outpost on the river, now known as Louisville, Kentucky.  In the photo at left are Joe Milicia, LaSalle Chief Administrative Officer, Councilman Mulvihill, Marc Bondy, Mayor, and Julie Columbus, Director of Culture and Recreation for The Town of LaSalle.  The Town of LaSalle is about 10 miles south of Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan. The group was recognized at last night's Metro Council meeting and honored with a proclamation to strengthen ties and friendship between Louisville and LaSalle.  They invited everyone to visit September 20 and 21  for LaSalle's Rendezvous Voyageur event, which will give a glimpse of encampment life along the shores of the Detroit River in the 1600 - 1700's. The Town of LaSalle is the oldest continuous European settlement in Ontario.  This festival will provide an authentic experience of the early French settlers and their encampment life, the Anishinaabe Natives and the Metis. Authentic re-enactments, interactive displays and a wide range of demonstrations await: make a birchbark canoe, participate in an ancient lacrosse game, taste traditional cuisine, shop unique merchants and experience the French and Native cultures from 300+ years ago.

June 20 - Walk with a Cop in Germantown

Councilman Mulvihill will join LMPD's Fourth Division Commander, Major Josh Judah, and other members of the division for a Walk with a Cop in Germantown June 20.  The folks at Dages Paint, 1101 Rammers Avenue, have graciously offered the use of their parking lot for the walk, which begins at 6:30 p.m. The Dages Paint parking lot is circled in red on the map above, and the walk route is shown in blue.  Walk with a Cop allows police and residents to have informal conversations as they walk through the neighborhood. Please join us for this walk and bring a friend.

June 20 - The Other Years to perform at Louisville Nature Center

The Louisville Nature Center's Third Thursday Concert Series will feature The Other Years Thursday June 20, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the center at 3745 Illinois Avenue. The Other Years are Anna Krippenstapel and Heather Summers - described as fiddle, guitar, banjo, and two human voices, riding a single harmonic laser beam, carrying instruments made of wood and skin and bones. There is something pure and strong and ancient in their voices, reminding people of Jean Ritchie or Hazel Dickens or Karen Dalton. Admission is a $10 suggested donation at the door.

June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day - know the signs of abuse

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is this Saturday, June 15. This annual day of awareness calls attention to a growing population of elderly people and some of the abuses they face. As longevity increases, abuse of the elderly is an increasing and serious problem that affects health and human rights and can cause death, so it is vital to raise awareness to prevent it whenever and wherever possible. Older people are often dependent on the care of their relatives who might be unable to cope with the challenges that often come with caring for an older adult. Many times, the older adult is seriously ill and not able to defend themselves. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day aims to encourage the public’s awareness so more people can identify and report elder abuse.

Elder abuse can take different forms, and knowing a few simple signs can help community members identify potential abuse:

• Physical abuse: Frequent injuries; multiple bruises in various stages of healing; individual appears frightened.
• Sexual abuse: Fearful of a particular person; upset when changed or bathed; irritation or injuries of the mouth, genitals or anus.
• Neglect: Obvious malnutrition, dehydration; dirty and offensive body odor; lack of glasses, dentures or hearing aid.
• Financial exploitation: Unusual activity in bank account; lack of food, clothing and personal supplies; missing personal belongings such as jewelry, TV, art.

Age-Friendly Louisville, through their Social Participation, Respect and Inclusion Workgroup has been working to raise awareness of elder abuse in Louisville. Specifically, this group seeks to improve community cohesion to guard against elder abuse by identifying and improving elder abuse trainings. This effort is being done in coordination with a wide variety of stakeholder and social service agencies.

The Age-Friendly Louisville Social Participation, Respect and Inclusion Workgroup, supported and facilitated by staff with Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services, meets on the second Tuesday every month from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Thrive Center, 204 E. Market Street. City to celebrate 50^th anniversary of iconic Dirt Bowl with tournament, series of community events

The iconic Dirt Bowl tournament is returning for a historic 50^th year with plans to commemorate the tournament’s anniversary with a series of events in addition to the tournament, which will begin the weekend of June 22 with games on the hard courts at Shawnee Park. 

Fifty years later, the iconic Dirt Bowl basketball tournament is still bringing basketball fans, family, friends and neighbors together to Shawnee Park in west Louisville each summer. As the tournament’s reputation grew, it attracted a bevy of superstars worthy of filling out an NBA roster of its own. Artis Gilmore. Darryl Griffith. Dan Issel. Wes Unseld. Rajon Rondo. Derek Anderson. Ron King.

The Dirt Bowl began in Algonquin Park but was moved in 1970 to Shawnee Park, where it has been hosted until this day. To celebrate the tournament’s origins, organizers will hold a kickoff celebration at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 16 at Algonquin Park. The event will include a slam dunk and three-point shooting contest and a game between last year’s Dirt Bowl winner, Business As Usual, and a to be determined opponent.

The 2019 Juneteenth Jubilee will begin at 2nd and Main on the KFC Yum! Center Plaza with a community gathering in remembrance of the thousands of enslaved Africans sold at this site in the 1800s. Grand Marshal Ed Hamilton and the River City Drum Corp will lead participants through Downtown Louisville in a march for freedom to Waterfront Park. At the Lincoln Memorial, sculpted by Hamilton a decade ago, a sunset performance will celebrate freedom, featuring guest speakers reading excerpts of the Emancipation Proclamation embellished by artistic responses and other readings and performances.  This first community-wide Juneteenth Jubilee commemorates the final communication of the abolition of slavery in the United States on June 19, 1865. June 19th is “Juneteenth National Freedom Day” in Kentucky, in honor and reflection of the significant roles that African-Americans have played in the history of the United States. This will be the first annual Juneteenth Jubilee celebration at the Lincoln Memorial at Waterfront Park. Louisville Metro Planning and Design Services District 10 cases

June 6, the Metro Planning Commission approved a zoning change for 719 Lynn Street, the Swiss Hall in neighboring District 15. JustServe.org makes it easy to volunteer

JustServe.org is a free volunteer website dedicated to bringing communities together through volunteerism. From JustServe.org: Non-profits can post the need for volunteers and those in our community can go to the website and see all the opportunities to volunteer. Because the website is self-funded, we never ask for donations to maintain the website, we never sell advertising and we never sell any information. All of us connected with JustServe.org are volunteers and there is no paid staff.

Reminders from Solid Waste Management Services: 

If you're renovating or remodeling, have a plan for disposing of the resulting debris. Construction and demolition debris in Louisville garbage and junk pickup collection is prohibited by ordinance, so hiring a hauling company or renting a dumpster may be in order.  Options for disposal of construction and demolition debris include taking it to the Waste Reduction Center on Meriwether Avenue. Fees are variable depending on volume. More information and a fee schedule are available here.

Yard waste collection times will be later due to high volume

From the Solid Waste Management division of Louisville Metro Public Works: To handle the high volume and get collection on schedule, we shifted the daily start time of yard waste collection. Crews are now starting out on their yard waste collection routes at noon instead of the previous 6 a.m. start time. That creates a better match between the availability of yard waste collection workers and equipment. The new schedule means the regular yard waste collection schedule will extend into the evening. However, residents should continue to set yard waste out by the morning of collection day. If yard waste has not been collected by 8 p.m. on the assigned day, residents should contact Metro311 the following morning at 311 or 574-5000.

RecycleCoach app will help Louisville Metro customers with collection reminders, recycling information and more

The new RecycleCoach app features notifications about garbage, recycling, bulk waste, and yard waste collection services.  RecycleCoach will help Solid Waste Management Services communicate better by sending special messages such as bulk waste rule reminders or suspension of services for yard waste, etc. The app also has a “what goes where” feature to allow a person to input a certain item to get information on disposal or recycling.  Download from the App Store or Google Play.

Center for Neighborhoods' NeighborMap provides useful data

The Center for Neighborhoods' NeighborMap is now available online! This new, layered map comes loaded with data on neighborhood resources, grocery access, flood-plain locations, tree cover and more. NeighborMap can help individuals and community organizations visualize and understand the assets available in their neighborhoods, and identify improvements they would like to see. Students from UofL's Kent School of Social Work contributed to the project by gathering data in urban neighborhoods, and will continue the partnership with CFN to help develop strong neighborhoods. NeighborMap was created in part with funding from Louisville Metro Government.

Call 811 before you dig

Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) will investigate and impose fines on anyone who comes into contact with an underground natural gas line while digging without having contacted 811 to have the lines located before digging. Contact 811 (call 8-1-1 or submit an online locate request at 811.com) before you dig and make sure that anyone doing excavation on your behalf contacts 811 two working days before they start.  New LouieConnect site connects people to help

Louisville non-profits have launched a new website to help connect people in need of food, shelter and more. Metro United Way and the Family Scholar House partnered to create LouieConnect, modeling it on a similar site created in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When someone uses LouieConnect, the web-based app asks for basic information and then lists applicable resources nearby — from food pantries to shelters to career centers to financial literacy programs.

Those temporary, illegal signs in the right of way? Recycle them.

We receive complaints about signs that are illegally posted on poles and at intersections in the right-of-way, including "We Buy Houses," "Express Cash" and others.  If you walk by these signs or live somewhere where these signs are posted and may be removed safely, help clean up our community by taking them down and throwing them away. Or better yet, consider recycling the signs - search for "recycled yard sign projects" online for ideas.

Sign up for LENSAlert (Smart911)

Click here to sign up for the LENSAlert (Louisville Emergency Notification System).  In addition to receiving notifications, individuals can create a Safety Profile for themselves and their household that can include any information they want 9-1-1 and first responders to have in the event of an emergency. When individuals make an emergency call, their Safety Profile is automatically displayed to the 9-1-1 call taker, allowing them to send the right responders to the right location with the right information. Information about medical history, allergies to medication, number of residents in a home and even a picture of the family dog can all be added to a Safety Profile.
