Councilman Yates Speaking at the Southwest Dreamteam's - Civic Leadership Program

f

Councilman David Yates supported the Southwest Dream Team as he spoke to up can coming leaders of Southwest Louisville at the Southwest Regional Library.

The Southwest Dream Team's - The Civic Leadership Program was instituted on the premise of networking bright leaders with proud businesses within Southwest Louisville.

During Yesterday's meeting on May 29th, David was presenting the crucial roles Louisville Metro Council plays with local businesses in the area.

Some of the highlights of the meeting include:

  • Improved Community Involvement
  • Continuous business-customer relationships
  • Multi-level among diverse businesses

Papa John's, Jamon Brown's Foundation, and Louisville Metro Providing Community Swimming

The plan includes 10 community swim events at two YMCA of Greater Louisville locations, structured swims at Central High School’s pool, and daily community swim sessions at The Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center – along with transportation options for those who otherwise would have trouble getting to the pools.

The four outdoor pools typically operated by Louisville Parks and Recreation – Norton (Camp Taylor), Algonquin, Sun Valley and Nelson Hornbeck (Fairdale) – will not be open this year due to budget cuts caused by the pension crisis and the Metro Council vote in March against new revenue sources.

After hearing that, Papa John’s CEO Steve Ritchie reached out to ask how his team could help. Representatives for Brown, a Louisville native and Fern Creek High School alum, soon joined the cause. And after gathering feedback from past and future users of the four pools, Louisville Parks and Recreation worked with partners -- the YMCA, Jefferson County Public Schools and TARC -- to develop the alternative plan for the summer.

Papa John’s donation of $90,000 through The Papa John’s Foundation for Building Community, along with the $5,000 donation from the Jamon Brown Foundation and a matching $5,000 donation from the Atlanta Falcons, will be used for pool operations, including lifeguards.

Beginning June 8, the Southwest and Downtown YMCAs will host 10 community swim events -- five at the Southwest YMCA, 2801 Fordhaven Road, and five at the Downtown YMCA, 555 S. Second St.

KY Transportation Cabinet Updates on Dixie Hwy

sadfsfdasfda

Below is a list of projects overseen by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet happening in Southwest Louisville.

US 31W (Dixie Highway) South:The right lane will be closed at Algonquin Parkway Lane (mile marker 17.0) for construction of a concrete bus pad.

US 31W (Dixie Highway):  Lane closures and sidewalk closures in place between Blanton Lane and Crums Lane (mile markers 12.5 to 15.3) due to construction for access management and bus rapid transit lines. Left lane is closed in each direction between Kendall Road and I-264 (mile markers 14.2 to 14.7). Roadway is reduced to two lanes on southbound Dixie Highway between Blanton Lane and Upper Hunters Trace. Roadway is reduced to one lane southbound and two lanes northbound between Herbert Avenue and Crums Lane. In these areas where the lane closures are in place, the sidewalks are closed on the side where the roadwork is taking place. Pedestrians need to cross Dixie Highway at a signalized intersection and use the sidewalk on the other side of the road instead of walking through the construction work.

Median Installation Ongoing

MAC Construction has progressed faster than anticipated on curb and sidewalk work between Upper Hunters Trace and Heaton Road.

The teams have made significant progress in recent weeks as we’ve had better weather to work with.

By installing medians, The New Dixie Highway Project will restrict mid-block left turns – and guide drivers to turn at signalized intersections or designated U-turn points.

During median installation, the interior lane immediately adjacent to the work will be closed in each direction. Work will be happening in more than one location at a time. As one section is complete, work will move to a new section.

Medians will be “non-mountable” so passenger vehicles cannot drive over them. Widths will vary with available space, with landscaping at key locations. While it may seem counter-intuitive to drivers, restricting mid-block left-turns creates not only a safer corridor, but a more efficient corridor. While some drivers will have to drive slightly further to reach their destination, the improved efficiency and reduction in accident-related congestion will mean a better traffic flow for everyone.

About the New Dixie Highway Project

The New Dixie Highway Project is a $35 million investment to improve safety, mobility and livability along the corridor.

The project will concentrate on three major areas of improvement:

  1. Roadway safety and design improvements, including raised medians and left-hand-only turn lanes (Crums Lane to Greenwood Road).
  2. A new Intelligent Transportation System that will improve and coordinate traffic signal timing along the entire corridor.
  3. The region’s first TARC bus rapid transit route, with eight priority buses and 37 highly visible bus stations and stops
