Metro Animal Services' Pets of the Week: Dayton and Turk

Dayton the dog

Dayton, MALE DOG

Dayton thinks puppies are overrated. Puppies never sleep through the night! They whine to go potty but once outside, decide it was false alarm. Dayton says skip the puppy problems and adopt a mature adult that gets you. The five-year-old likes to sleep through the night and thinks you’re old enough to go to the bathroom by yourself. Adopt Dayton for free with an approved application, thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. He’s neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on vaccinations! To meet or adopt Dayton, visit Animal House Adoption Center (3516 Newburg Rd.) Tuesday-Sunday 12-6pm. Send questions to animalservicesadoption@louisvilleky.gov, or call 502-473-PETS.

Turk the cat

Turk, MALE CAT

Turk’s name is a nod to his Heritage. If the Turkish Van’s distinctive coloring doesn’t catch your attention, his super friendly personality will. It seems Turk has never met a stranger! The one-year-old is also a very sweet, loving kitty that wouldn’t mind a fur sibling or two. This social butterfly’s adoption fee is waived thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. Turk is neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on vaccinations. To adopt Turk, visit Animal House Adoption Center (3516 Newburg Rd.) Tuesday-Sunday 12-6pm.

Honor Flight Bluegrass “Operation Bravo Zulu” to Honor Veterans on 75th D-Day Anniversary - June 6th

Operation ZULU

Seventy-five years ago, on June 6, 1944, United States (US) forces led the Allied Nations in the largest amphibious invasion in history—Operation Overlord, known as D-Day.

On June 6, 2019, Honor Flight Bluegrass will honor these American heroes who served in WWII with a celebration at Louisville Memorial Auditorium.

“Operation Bravo Zulu”, will feature honored guest, 95-year-old WWII Medal of Honor recipient, Hershel “Woody” Williams, who will join his fellow WWII Veterans on this historic day. He will lead the ceremony with 75 or more WWII Veterans and their families as we recognize and pay tribute to these members of the “Greatest Generation.”

Dale Faughn, a Marine WWII Veteran and Kentucky’s Poet Laureate, will address attendees with a special 75th Anniversary D-Day poem. French Consul-General, Guillaume Lacroix, will offer remarks for this occasion, as well as other state and local dignitaries. Included in the program are exhibits, the Ladies for Liberty singing troupe and the Don Krekel Orchestra.

Each WWII Veteran will also be presented with commemorative gifts. The public is invited to join these Veterans and their families for the ceremony followed by a meet and greet.

Veterans will be on hand for media interviews, beginning at 4 p.m. at the Louisville (KY) Memorial Auditorium, 970 South Fourth Street. Doors open to the public at 6 p.m. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased through the Louisville Memorial Auditorium website at www.louisvillememorialauditorium.com.

Metro Announces Summer Swimming Options

Public Pool

With the help of local partners, a major donation from Papa John’s and a contribution from former University of Louisville and current Atlanta Falcons player Jamon Brown’s foundation, Mayor Greg Fischer announced a plan for summer swimming alternatives for youth and families in the Louisville area.

The plan includes 10 community swim events at two YMCA of Greater Louisville locations, structured swims at Central High School’s pool, and daily community swim sessions at The Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center – along with transportation options for those who otherwise would have trouble getting to the pools.

The four outdoor pools typically operated by Louisville Parks and Recreation – Norton (Camp Taylor), Algonquin, Sun Valley and Nelson Hornbeck (Fairdale) – will not be open this year due to budget cuts caused by the pension crisis and the Metro Council vote in March against new revenue sources.

After hearing that, Papa John’s CEO Steve Ritchie reached out to ask how his team could help. Representatives for Brown, a Louisville native and Fern Creek High School alum, soon joined the cause. And after gathering feedback from past and future users of the four pools, Louisville Parks and Recreation worked with partners -- the YMCA, Jefferson County Public Schools and TARC -- to develop the alternative plan for the summer.

Papa John’s donation of $90,000 through The Papa John’s Foundation for Building Community, along with the $5,000 donation from the Jamon Brown Foundation and a matching $5,000 donation from the Atlanta Falcons, will be used for pool operations, including lifeguards.

Specifics of the plan:

Beginning June 8, the Southwest and Downtown YMCAs will host 10 community swim events -  five at the Southwest YMCA, 2801 Fordhaven Road, and five at the Downtown YMCA, 555 S. Second St.

Southwest YMCA

Saturday, June 15th from 3:30 - 6:30 p.m.

Saturday, June 29th from 3:30- 6:30 p.m.

Saturday, July 13th from 3:30- 6:30 p.m.

Friday, July 26th from 5:30- 830 p.m.

Friday, August 9th from 5:30- 830 p.m.

Downtown YMCA

Saturday, June 8th from 3:30-6:30 p.m.

Sunday, June 23rd from 3:30-6:30 p.m.

Sunday, July 7th from 3:30-6:30 p.m.

Sunday, July 21st from 3:30-6:30 p.m.

Sunday, August 4th from 3:30-6:30 p.m.

Fees are $3/person 14 years and over & $2/youth 13 and under. Vouchers for the summer swim events can be purchased at Metro Parks Administrative Offices, 1297 Trevilian Way; at the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center, 201 Reservoir Avenue starting Monday, June 3; or at the YMCA, beginning 30 minutes before the start of the event. Capacity for these events is 100 people/event.

  • A partnership with JCPS will allow for structured program swims at Central High School’s pool, 1130 Chestnut St., beginning June 14. These four-hour sessions on Fridays and Saturdays will host summer camps, community organizations and individuals interested in swim lessons. Group rates are $2 per child. The swims are from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Friday, and from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturdays in June and July.

Interested organizations should call the Parks and Recreation main office at (502) 574- 7275 for additional information.

  • The Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center will host daily open community swims beginning June 10. The hours are Monday-Thursday from noon-4 p.m.; Friday from 12-8 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday from noon-4 p.m. Normal pricing applies.

Realizing that transportation may be a barrier for children and families seeking the opportunity for one of these three options, Louisville Parks and Recreation is also working with TARC to provide rides to swim sites for those without access to a vehicle. For more information, please call Parks at (502) 574-7275.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Road Alerts & Updates

KY Transportation

Below is a list of projects overseen by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet happening in Southwest Louisville.

US 31W (Dixie Highway) South: The right lane will be closed at Algonquin Parkway Lane (mile marker 17.0) for construction of a concrete bus pad.

US 31W (Dixie Highway): Lane closures and sidewalk closures in place between Blanton Lane and Crums Lane (mile markers 12.5 to 15.3) due to construction for access management and bus rapid transit lines. Left lane is closed in each direction between Kendall Road and I-264 (mile markers 14.2 to 14.7). Roadway is reduced to two lanes on southbound Dixie Highway between Blanton Lane and Upper Hunters Trace. Roadway is reduced to one lane southbound and two lanes northbound between Herbert Avenue and Crums Lane. In these areas where the lane closures are in place, the sidewalks are closed on the side where the roadwork is taking place.
