No Memorial Day Garbage, Recycling, Junk or Yard Waste Pickup

Collections delayed one day for week of May 27

 There will be no residential garbage, junk, recycling or yard waste collection within the Louisville Metro Urban Services District (former Louisville city limits) on Memorial Day, Monday May 27. Collection through the week will be delayed by one day because of the holiday.

Residents who rely on private haulers for garbage, recycling and yard waste collection should consult those haulers about holiday collection schedules.

Also, the Waste Reduction Center on Meriwether Avenue, along with all staffed recycling centers and the Haz Bin hazardous waste disposal site, will be closed on Saturday May 25 in recognition of the holiday and closed on Monday as usual. Hike, Bike & Paddle- Memorial Day 8am to noon

The Subway Fresh Fit Hike, Bike & Paddle is a twice annual event held every Memorial & Labor Day. Thousands of participants flock to Waterfront Park to enjoy a morning full of fun. Bring the entire family for this free, healthy community event. Various fitness demonstrations start the day including yoga, tai chi and zumba. There are numerous vendor booths available for information and giveaways. After all of that, take your pick from a 5k hike, 12.5-mile bike ride or a paddle on the Ohio River. This event is not a race. It is open to participants of all levels and we encourage everyone to get out and enjoy the festivities!  

Free t-shirt while supplies last. Go Green! Bring your own water bottles!  Fill stations are available at Waterfront Park.

Directions:

The Subway Fresh Fit Hike, Bike & Paddle takes place at Waterfront Park's Great Lawn (map this location). The hike and bike starts on the Great Lawn at E. Witherspoon Street. Paddlers will put in at the University of Louisville boat ramp next to the Community Boathouse off River Road. (1321 River Rd, Louisville, KY 40206).

Bike Route Info:

The scenic 13-mile bike route will travel west from Waterfront Park, to Shawnee Park and back to the Great Lawn. Note: Riders have the option at any time to turn off the route and head back to Waterfront Park.

Both the cycling and walking routes will be marked with signage and will have water stops at the halfway points to refill water bottles. The Louisville Bicycle Club and Scheller’s Fitness and Cycle are providing “bike captains” to help cyclists obey the rules of the road.

“Bike doctors” will be in Waterfront Park before the ride and along the route to assist cyclists with any equipment problems. Louisville Metro Police will provide traffic assistance at key intersections, and the Louisville Metro EMS bicycle team will patrol the route. All cyclists are asked to remain behind the lead Police vehicles.

The Brain Injury Association will be on hand to distribute 500 free helmets to riders. View safety instructions here.

        The Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control Board opens a public comment period April 19, 2019, on proposed amendments to Regulations 1.02 Definitions, Version 15; 1.04 Performance Tests, Version 7; 1.15 Version of Federal Regulations Incorporated by Reference, Version 20; 6.13 Standard of Performance for Existing Storage Vessels for Volatile Organic Compounds, Version 8; 7.12 Standard of Performance for New Storage Vessels for Volatile Organic Compounds, Version 8; 6.21 Standard of Performance for Existing Gasoline Loading Facilities at Bulk Terminals, Version 3; 7.20 Standard of Performance for New Gasoline Loading Facilities at Bulk Terminals, Version 3; 6.31 Standard of Performance for Existing Miscellaneous Metal Parts and Products Surface Coating Operations, Version 7; 7.59 Standard of Performance for New Miscellaneous Metal Parts and Products Surface Coating Operations, Version 7; 7.02 Adoption of Federal New Source Performance Standards, Version 18 ; that were proposed on April 17, 2019. If adopted by the Board, the amendments to Regulations 1.02, 1.04, 6.13, 6.21, 6.31, 7.12, 7.20, and 7.59 will be submitted to US EPA for inclusion in the Kentucky State Implementation Plan.

Notice of Action on a Title V Construction Permit

              The Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District (District) proposes to issue a construction permit to Zeon Chemicals L.P. (synthetic rubber manufacturer), 4100 Bells Lane, Louisville, 40211, in accordance with Regulation 2.03. The project is to install a new 1060 gallon heated monobutyl fumarate (MBF) tank. This tank is heated by a new 4-drum hot water bath with electric heat exchanger and water pump for melting MBF; and new mass flow meter for accurate charging. The 30-day public comment period starts on May 11, 2019, and ends on June 12, 2019. A public hearing may be scheduled if the District determines that there are germane, unresolved issues or substantial public interest, in accordance with Regulation 2.07.

There is also important information that will be available describing community resources supporting those possibly facing homelessness.  

Legal Aid is there to provide much needed assistance for a critical situation, and further help in ultimately avoiding that experience

Neighborhood Place Classes and Activities

Mondays, May 6 – July 1, Women’s Empowerment Group at Bridges of Hope Neighborhood Place, 5 – 7 p.m.  Located at 1411 Alonquin Pkwy.  RSVP to 634-6050 to help with planning because dinner will be served at the end of each segment.  This free, eight-week series focuses on educating and empowering women by building knowledge and skills in multiple areas.  (Excludes Monday, May 27).  Presented by Bridges of Hope Neighborhood Place and Urban Strategies, Inc. the Women’s Empowerment Group was created by women to serve women to provide a safe, welcoming space that encourages participants to speak openly and candidly.  Children are welcome to accompany their parent or guardian with special kids programming provided by Play Cousins Collective while the women’s group is in session.  Includes a graduation ceremony on Mon., July 1, for those who complete all sessions.

Ngoma Movement Series

 “Ngoma is Swahili for dance”. “The dance is a poem of which each movement is a word.” - Mata Hari The series of beginning dance classes includes Ballet, Jazz, Liturgical, Hip-Hop, and Modern. They take place from 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. on Wednesdays, ages six through nine and Thursdays, ages three through five. An older age group might be added based upon the number of requests. Space is limited, and you must sign-up. The cost is $25.00 a series. Appropriate dance attire is required. Assistance and resources are available. Enhanced After School Tutoring Program & Cultural Institute

Our students are coming home these days with more questions, fewer books and the achievement gap continues to increase. The Office of Multicultural Ministry’s Catholic Enrichment Center is offering homework assistance and basic academic review for students in grades K-12 to assist in bridging that gap. Students will be exposed to alternative learning exercises provided by experienced educators. Tutoring takes place on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. The Cultural Institute is being offered again this year. Sewing takes place on Mondays, Dance on Tuesdays and Arts and Crafts on Thursdays. The daily tutoring sessions are by appointment only and must be scheduled in advance. Men’s Bible Study

The Office of Multicultural Ministry’s Catholic Enrichment Center is hosting Men’s Bible Study sessions on Tuesdays from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. This is a weekly opportunity for men to study scripture and explore the power of God’s word while providing an opportunity for men to connect and bond with other men through this male ministry initiative. The purpose of the forum is to raise awareness and provide information about the causes, medical treatments, and prevention of SCD.  In addition, there will be a panel of adults with the disease and trait, to address questions. The workshop will provide sickle cell literature on the Americans with Disabilities Act/ Section 504, Jefferson County Public School (JCPS) and the Disability Resource Center, University of Louisville (UofL).  Mrs. Ivy Brito, State Farm Insurance, will be available to answer questions on insurance qualifications, issues, and needs. The event is Free to the public. Come help slam the closet door on Sickle Cell Disease and encourage those suffering from the disease to seek the support of two of the world’s most qualified experts and our teams of supportive advocates. If someone you know has sickle cell disease or trait, it is time to join us.
