Dear Neighbor,

No matter where you plan to be this weekend - at the track, with friends and family, or as far away from town as possible - have a safe and happy Derby Weekend

This week, you should have received a snail-mailed newsletter from our office. If you did not receive a copy but live in the district, please let us know, and we'll update our records.

We hope you will take a few minutes to fill out and return the survey portion of the newsletter. This short questionnaire about sidewalk and paving needs as well as your priorities for our district and our city are critical to the decisions we make with the limited resources we have.

We take your input seriously and communicate areas of need directly with the leadership of the Louisville Metro Public Works department.

Although we have mentioned it before, please join us for for our Spring Town Hall on May 11th at 9:30 AM at St. John Paul II Church (3042 Hikes Ln.). There we will have discussions with department leaders on issues facing our community.

As you no doubt have heard by now, Louisville is facing a budget crunch (although not as bad as originally predicted by the administration) and that will impact our ability to move forward with paving and other capital projects.

Our office is combing through the FY20 budget, which will take effect starting on July 1, but we invite you to take a sharp look at the document, too. You can find it online here. May I suggest starting with pages 6-43 of the Executive Budget document. That gives a good primer on the overall vision outlined in the remaining pages and the Detail Book, which offers deeper insights into the budget. If you have suggestions, please let us know by email, and make sure the Mayor knows, too. At the end of the day, it is his job to implement the funding your representatives appropriate.

Street Closures for Derby Week

As fun as Derby and all the activities leading up to the big day are, it can be super frustrating to try and navigate the various street closures in and around downtown, especially on the weekends. The easy advice is to always allow extra time and be patient with your fellow travelers. They're frustrated, too. Below are links to specific street closures you may want to consider avoiding in the next few days.

May 9 | St. Matthews-Eline Library Grand Reopening!

Library

A brand new St. Matthews Eline Library will open on May 9 and you are invited to the celebration!

With 7,800 square feet of additional space, the now 19,000-square-foot library will house more than 70,000 books and feature a large meeting room with seating for 100, a small conference room, a space for teens, an outdoor children’s area, and new technology— including self-checkout stations. A new entrance with glass façade will fill the space with an abundance of natural light, and services will be on one level for easy access for all members of the community.

Renovation of the St. Matthews Library was spearheaded by St. Matthews Mayor Rick Tonini and the St. Matthews City Council as part of a comprehensive $10 million project to remodel the St. Matthews City Hall and Police headquarters. Louisville Metro Government contributed $1 million towards the library portion of the project.

The community is invited to come celebrate the grand opening with Mayor Tonini and Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer on Thursday, May 9 at 10:00 a.m. The library is located at 3940 Grandview Ave. There will be tours of the library, refreshments, and activities for the whole family. The grand opening event is free and open to the public. Please join us!

Report a Pothole! #502pothole

The annual blitz to rid Louisville Metro streets of the parting pothole gifts of winter is underway. We’re moving across the city in a grid pattern to patch all the potholes we can find. Of course, we respond to reports and patch potholes year round, but we especially want the public's help though the blitz that ends on April 30. Here's how you can report a pothole:

  • On Twitter use the hashtag 502pothole. Just include the address or intersection where the pothole is located along with the hashtag in a tweet, and you’re done.
  • The pothole reporting form that you can find at the top of the city’s webpage, Louisvilleky.gov. Just click on the “Report a pothole” link and fill in the location information.
  • Contact Metro311 in one of these ways
    • Call them at 311 or 574-5000
    • Download the Metro311 app on your smartphone and use it to report a pothole

Email them at metro.311@louisvilleky.gov
