The annual Pothole blitz is underway. Metro Public Works (MPW) is moving across the city in a grid pattern to patch all the potholes it can find. Here is how to report a pothole:
- On Twitter use the hashtag #502pothole. Just include the address or intersection where the pothole is located along with the hashtag in a tweet, and you’re done.
- The pothole reporting form that you can find at the top of the city’s webpage, Louisvilleky.gov. Just click on the “Report a pothole” link and fill in the location information.
- Contact Metro311 in one of these ways
- Call them at 311 or 574-5000
- Download the Metro311 app on your smartphone and use it to report a pothole

The volume of yard waste set out for collection by residents has been very heavy since the April 1 start. The high volume has led to delayed or missed collections in some cases. To handle to high volume and get collection on schedule, we shifted the daily start time of yard waste collection. Crews are now starting out on their yard waste collection routes at noon instead of the previous 6 a.m. start time. That creates a better match between the availability of yard waste collection workers and equipment. The new schedule means the regular yard waste collection schedule will extend into the evening. However, residents should continue to set yard waste out by the morning of collection day. If yard waste has not been collected by 8 p.m. on the assigned day, residents should contact Metro311 the following morning at 311 or 574-5000.
How to reduce yard waste:
The best way to reduce the need for collection and improve your yard is to follow the Love 'Em and Leave 'Em (LELE) practice of using your yard waste as fertilizer.
LELE Tips & Tricks:
-
Set your mower to maximum height. Follow the one-third rule: never cut more than one-third of the total height of the grass when you mow.
-
Don't bag those clippings! Leaves and grass break down rapidly, releasing nutrients back into your soil.
-
Mulch leaves and landscape trimmings into your lawn. Mow over landscape trimmings and leaves without a grass catcher. To avoid hazards while mowing, make sure trimmings are no larger than a pencil.
-
Start composting! With your own compost bin or pile you can recycle food scraps and yard waste into usable compost for your flower beds, gardens, potted plants, or other landscaping. More information

Driver behavior is crucial to safety in residential neighborhoods. When you’re driving, go slow enough to see and respond to every new circumstance. Look under parked cars, and you may see children’s feet from the sidewalk, though you can’t see them otherwise. If it’s dark, take another 10 mph off your speed, just in case. In short, take every precaution necessary to avoid bringing tragedy to your own neighborhood. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that most people who are speeding through residential areas actually live in the neighborhood! You might be eager to come home after work, but that’s no excuse if a child is hit and injured. Quite literally, speed kills: If you hit a pedestrian at 20 mph, 5% will die. If you hit a pedestrian at 30 mph, 45% will die. At 40 mph, 85% will die. Please use good judgment when you are driving and remember that, in most cases, traffic behind you will be forced to slow down if you do.
