April 2019

Joyce

Volunteer of the Month!

This month we want to recognize Joyce van Berkel at the Douglass Community Center. Joyce started volunteering at Douglass after moving to Louisville three years ago and getting involved in the Silver Sneakers Program. After learning that the Center was shortlisted to close she joined the fight to raise awareness. Joyce says her favorite part of volunteering is "Meeting the fine people. The people you meet through volunteering are some of the most generous, kind, happy, energetic, and competent people. It also makes you feel like a part of the community and establishes a network of friends/people." Joyce also wants to encourage others to get involved in volunteering. She says "You benefit way more from volunteering than you give.  You learn so much, meet new people, and develop friendships."

Thanks for volunteering Joyce!

Fun Fact

FLO

Have you heard of Frederick Law Olmsted? He is known as the father of landscape design, and he is responsible for some of Louisville's most notable parks and parkways. Cherokee, Seneca, Iroquois, and Shawnee Park are just some of the fantastic parks he designed for the city in 1891!
