Metro Council voted down balanced approach; $35 million in cuts to services coming

Louisville Metro Seal

The Louisville Metro Council voted 15-11 Thursday night not to raise tax rates on some insurance premiums. Now, council members will have to find $35 million in budget cuts for fiscal year 2020.

"We're in a place where there are no great options," Councilman Mulvihill said. "No one's glad to be here talking about raising revenue and taxes. No one's happy to be here talking about cutting services. But unfortunately, that's what's been laid before us."

The plan presented to the council Thursday combined budget cuts with new tax revenue in the form of raised insurance premiums. Fifteen members voted against the plan, with 11 voting for it, including Councilman Mulvihill.

"Now, we'll work together going forward to minimize the detrimental effects on the most vital programs as much as possible," Mulvihill said.

Next steps: Mayor Fischer will present a FY20 budget with the first year of cuts totaling $35 million on April 25. The council will vote on the budget and cuts on June 25.
