The Louisville Metro Council Budget Committee is announcing the following schedule for hearings on the increase in pension contributions required by the Kentucky Retirement Systems, possible reductions in Metro services and a proposed increase in the insurance premium tax.

The schedule is as follows:

Monday, February 25 – Special Budget Committee meeting at 4:30 p.m. Louisville Metro’s Chief Financial Officer Daniel Frockt will be making a presentation. The committee will also hear from two representatives of the Kentucky Association of Counties - Shellie Hampton, Director of Governmental Relations and Rich Ornstein, Staff Attorney, and from J.D. Chaney, Deputy Executive Director of the Kentucky League of Cities.

Thursday, February 28 – Regular Budget Committee meeting at 4:30 p.m. Public Hearing beginning at 6:00 p.m., at the conclusion of the regular committee meeting.

Monday, March 4 – Public Hearing beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Thursday, March 14 – Regular Budget Committee meeting at 4:30 p.m.

The annual program that helps prevent low income residents of Louisville from being disconnected from utility services began on Monday.

LIHEAP, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, is administered by Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services. The Crisis Component of LIHEAP will run through March 29, or until available funds have been expended, whichever comes first.

This year’s Crisis Program once again features expanded eligibility allowing residents who received a utility bill with a past due amount to apply, in addition to continuing to serve those who received a disconnect notice.

Residents wishing to apply must make an appointment in advance utilizing the automated appointment system. The toll free service is available twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.

Appointments can be scheduled by phone by calling 502-991-8391 or online at louisvilleky.cascheduler.com.

Applicants must be Jefferson County residents with a household income at or below 130 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. Read more details here.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide

helps low and moderate income taxpayers (moderate income is generally considered to be an income of less than $60,000), with special attention to those 60 and older. This is a free service provided at no cost to the taxpayer!

Sites are open from Feb 1 - Apr 15. For assistance at other times, contact your local IRS or State Revenue Department office.  

Please note that sites will shut off their sign-in list when the expected maximum number of clients have been registered for that day. Early arrival is suggested. Also note that new returns cannot be started during the last hour scheduled for the site. Hours may vary and our site owners may occasionally need the facility for their own use. The Slow Food Bluegrass School Garden Grant supports a school garden project based in Louisville, KY with $5,000 distributed over the course of three years: $2,500 in year one, $1,500 in year two, and $1,000 in year three. To be eligible for a Slow Food Bluegrass Garden Grant, applicants must be a (a) 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization or (b) nonprofit (public or private) K-12 school, developing a student garden project focused on connecting and engaging children with fresh fruits and vegetables. Priority is given to both limited-resource communities and to projects clearly demonstrating strong buy-in from stakeholders. Volunteers of America have recently opened new addiction recovery locations to better serve the community. They have several programs at 1436 South Shelby Street. Freedom House is a residential program for pregnant and parenting women. Shelby Men’s Recovery Center is also located on South Shelby. This is a 90 day residential program for men, where clients are able to work while seeking treatment. They have Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and services for men, women and families. These services are available at 2500 West Broadway and 4303 W Broadway. Transitional Housing will be available in July for homeless women with children who would like to continue their sobriety at 4303 W Broadway

Kentucky Kingdom announced that they are now accepting applications for team members for the park's 2019 season. Park officials said they need to fill approximately 1,400 seasonal positions in departments ranging from aquatics and rides to guest relations and health services. Team members get free admission to the park when off duty, opportunities to receive complimentary admission tickets for family and friends, discounts on food and merchandise and opportunity to attend events held exclusively for team members. The rescheduled Mary M. Miller riverboat cruise is coming up soon!  Due to dangerous weather conditions, the original date was cancelled and moved to Sunday, April 14th in order to give enough time for water levels to return to normal.

There will be two cruise departure times, 1:00pm and 4:30pm. Boarding will begin 30 minutes prior to each of these scheduled times. Limited seating will be available the day of the cruises. You can reserve a seat by visiting Southwest Community Ministries and giving a $5 suggested minimum donation.
