Farewell to a local landmark: Hauck's Handy Store
Councilman Mulvihill stopped by for a last visit to Hauck's Handy Store Thursday.
The store is closing after operating more than 100 years at the corner of Goss and Hoertz in Schnitzelburg. Owners and sisters Lynn Hite and Karen Hauck are ready to retire from the store that was established by their grandparents, William and Elizabeth Hauck, in 1916.
George Hauck, now 98, took over the store from his mother just after World War II and showed up for work every day until about two years ago, when his health forced him to move to St. Joseph's Home for the Aged.
That's Karen Hauck in the photo above with Councilman Mulvihill.
Councilman Mulvihill's daughter Katie also braved the cold and snow to visit Hauck's Handy Store one last time.
The store, along with 998-1004 Goss Avenue, 1008 Goss Avenue and 1315 Hoertz Avenue, are for sale. This includes three shotgun houses, a camelback and a duplex. Three are zoned commercially, and the other two are zoned residential.
We join the community in thanking the Haucks for their contributions to the neighborhood and wish Lynn Hite and Karen Hauck a happy retirement. The Haucks will be missed.
