January 4 - Information session on volunteering for CASA, a District 10 neighbor since 2012

Councilman Mulvihill met with William Myers, President and CEO of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of the River Region, on Thursday. CASA is based out of the Kosair Charities - Sam Swope Center on Eastern Parkway.

Since 1984 CASA has served abused and neglected children in our area. CASA supports and promotes court-appointed volunteer advocacy for abused and neglected children so that they can thrive in safe, permanent homes. CASA recruits and trains community volunteers to advocate for the best interests of children.

You Can Change a Child’s Life!

Become a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). CASA volunteers spend one to four hours per week advocating for children who have experienced abuse and neglect. Applicants must complete 30 hours of training, complete a background check, and be 21 or older in age.

The next information session is January 4 at 1 p.m. Visit www.CASARiverRegion.org to sign up or to speak to someone about volunteering. You can change a child’s life.

Thanks to these volunteers from the St. Agnes Community for their work at Gilda's Club

Gilda's volunteers

Thanks to these St. Agnes Community volunteers who volunteer at Gilda's Club Louisville. They were spotted Monday providing meals for cancer support groups at Gilda's. From left to right are Elaine Linehan, Mary Claire Schmidt, Will Ousley and Bridget Linehan.

Gilda's Club mission is to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and sustained by community.

Gilda’s Club was founded in 1991 by Joanna Bull, Gilda Radner’s cancer psychotherapist, together with Gilda’s husband, Gene Wilder, with the help of several of Gilda’s friends.

The first Gilda’s Club, including a worldwide training center, opened its signature red door in New York City in 1995.

Call 502-583-0075 or leave a message for information about joining or volunteering at Gilda's Club.

The USA Cyclocross National Championships continue this week and weekend at Joe Creason Park.

Masters events for men and women will be held December 12-14. Saturday features events for juniors and Industry Men and Women. The championships culminate on Sunday with the Junior 17-18 Men as well as U23 and elite competitions for men and women.

Joe Creason Park access changes

Because of the USA Cyclocross National Championships, vehicle access to Joe Creason Park will be limited through December 16.

Access to the park will be prohibited through the end of the race on December 16. Park access may be limited following the race due to maintenance and restoration efforts throughout the course and within the park itself. Read more about restoration here

For more information on the race, visit usacycling.org.

Mind your vehicle on cold mornings!

On the map below, provided by LMPD Sixth Division Resource Officer George McMillan, each of the markers represents a stolen vehicle. All but one of these vehicles were being warmed up in the morning with keys inside.

Officer McMillan recommends residents "avoid giving their vehicles away in this manner," and reminds us that leaving an unattended vehicle running is against the law.
