Louisville Grows Volunteer Opportunities

Louisville Grows has several upcoming volunteer opportunities to canvass the Shelby Park and Smoketown neighborhoods. Volunteer efforts will involve going door-to-door in the neighborhoods, talking to individuals about getting a free tree at the spring tree planting. Many individuals cite canvassing and talking with those in the community as their favorite part of being involved with Louisville Grows.

Louisville Grows needs help canvassing the Shelby Park neighborhood on December 8.

There will be 2 shifts: 9:30-12:30 or 1:30-4:30pm.

Volunteers should meet at Shelby Park Community Center, 600 E. Oak St. 

Light snacks will be provided.

Neighborhood Place Partners Host Holiday Festivities, a Women's Empowerment Group and Much More

 Neighborhood Place joins with community partners to host the Park DuValle Holiday Festival on Dec. 1 featuring visits with Santa and a holiday concert, and a Kwanzaa Reception on Dec. 28 at Ujima Neighborhood Place.  Several other valuable services and classes will take place in December including a home energy-saving workshop, a Women’s Empowerment Information Session, TARC Smart Card registration and low internet sign-ups.  To learn more about these offerings, please refer to the list below.

Dec. 1, Third Annual Park DuValle Holiday Festival, 1 - 6 p.m.   Celebrate the holiday season in the Park DuValle area with a celebration of drums and snowball fight at 1 p.m. at Southwick Community Center;  visits with Santa at 2 p.m. at the Dr. William Weathers Senior Building; and Holiday Bingo, the Christmas cookie factory and face painting at Ujima Neighborhood Place 3610 Bohne Ave. at 3:30 p.m.  A holiday reception begins at 5 p.m. and at 6 p.m. a holiday concert and tree lighting will take place at the Villages of DuValle club house at 1804 Russell Lee Dr.

Dec. 4, Car Seat Safety Check at Ujima Neighborhood Place, 9 – 11 a.m.  Located at 3610 Bohne Ave.  Call Norton Children’s Hospital at 629-7358 to make an appointment.  Learn how to install your child’s car seat or booster seat. Find out if it’s time for a change.  Car seat-fitting by appointment only.   

Dec. 5, WeCare Energy Efficiency Overview at Cane Run Neighborhood Place, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Located at 3410 Lees Lane. Call 1-800-356-5467 for more information.  Representatives from the WeCare Program at LG&E will be on hand to talk with interested persons about energy efficiency, energy usage and tips to reduce utility bills.WeCare staff can also help determine if households are eligible for a variety of free services including air duct sealing and insulation, attic and wall insulation, programmable thermostats and much more.

Dec. 5, 11, 13 and 20, A Healthy Journey for Two Educational Baby Shower at multiple locations A Healthy Journey for Two is an educational baby shower open to any expectant mothers.  Contact Mendy Mason at 502-341-5400 to register and for more information.  The class will include a range of information and resources, as well as free baby items, gift cards, prizes, and snacks. Hosted by Centerstone and KIDSNow.  Fathers are welcome but must be registered.

Dec 6, 10 and 17, Sodexo Hiring Opportunities  at three locations Sodexo, a food-service agency, will provide on-the-spot interviews for positions with Jewish Hospital, Our Lady of Peace and University of Louisville Hospital. Bring your resume and be prepared for an interview. This is one of Sodexo’s busiest hiring seasons. Stop by if you are looking for employment that can lead to a full-time or part-time position.

Dec. 6 and 7, TARC Smart Card Registration at Neighborhood Place at two locations For more information call 585-1234. TARC Mobile Unit will be on site to register individuals for the new smart card. As of Jan. 7, 2019, paper tickets will no longer be used on a TARC bus. Customers can get a jump start in acquiring a smart card that will be required to ride the bus. Customers will be allowed to put a value on new smart cards and seniors will be able to get smart cards with a photo I.D. verifying age.

Mondays through Thursdays, YMCA’s “Caring and Learning with Me” program at Thomas Jefferson Middle School, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Located at 1503 Rangeland Rd., side of Thomas Jefferson Middle School. This free program provides a wonderful learning environment for children ages 3-5 years old and their caregivers focusing on play and exploration. The adult caregiver is required to attend with the child/ren.  Younger children ages newborn to two years old are also welcome. Sponsored by the YMCA with support from First Neighborhood Place.

Dec. 10, Bridges of Hope Women’s Empowerment Group Information Session, 5 - 6 p.m. Located at 1411 Algonquin Parkway. Call 634-6050 for more information. This one-hour information session will give prospective participants a synopsis of an upcoming Women's Empowerment Group and its format. Learn more about this 10-week program designed to develop the skills and confidence necessary to help uplift, empower, build support, and establish healthy relationships. The topics of focus are relationships, parenting, mental and physical health, employment, education, and self-care.

BBB Tips for the Marriott Data Breach

BBB Tips for the Marriott Data Breach BBB serving Louisville, Southern Indiana, and Western Kentucky is alerting local consumers about the latest data breach announcement involving Marriott International. Today, Marriott International announced that an unauthorized party had gained access to their guest reservation database. At this time, the data breach may have compromised information for approximately 327 million guests. Some information may include name, mailing address, phone number, email, passport number, date of birth, and communication preferences.

BBB Tips: See if you may be affected. Marriott has created a website, info.starwood.com, with additional information and a “frequently asked questions” section. They have also announced they will begin to send emails to consumers starting today, November 30, 2018, to guests whose emails were in their reservation database. Get a copy of your credit report. If you haven’t pulled a copy of your credit report lately, now is the time. Consumers can visit annualcreditreport.com or call 1-877-322-8228 to obtain a free copy. You can pull one free copy of your report from each of the three credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) every 12 months. Check your financial statements. Be sure to regularly monitor your bank and credit card statements. If you spot anything suspicious, contact your bank or credit card company immediately. ABOUT BBB: For more than 100 years, the Better Business Bureau has been helping people find businesses, brands and charities they can trust. In 2017, people turned to BBB more than 160 million times for BBB Business Profiles on more than 5.2 million businesses and Charity Reports on 11,000 charities, all available for free at bbb.org. Crime Mapping

First Division

Major Eric Johnson Johnson began his career in 1999 with the Louisville Division of Police (LPD). Prior to merger, he served as a patrol officer and a flex detective in the former Third and Fifth Districts. After merger, Johnson served in the Fourth Division and Metro Narcotics. In August 2005, Johnson was promoted to Sergeant and served in the First Division as a patrol and Division Detective supervisor.  In April 2013, Johnson was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Second Division.  In October 2013, Johnson became the Strategic Planning Lieutenant, where he oversaw the department's strategic plan, the Mayor’s LouieStat program, the department’s response to the President's Report on 21st Century Policing and a series of performance improvement initiatives.   After being promoted to the rank of major, Johnson commanded the Administrative Services Division. Major Johnson is a graduate of Southern High School and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville (U of L). He has received certifications in LEAN and Six Sigma. He also earned certification as a Balanced Scorecard Professional in advanced strategic planning.

Second Division

Major Ryan Bates Bates began his law enforcement career in August 1997 with the Louisville Division of Police. He served in the former Second, Fourth, and Sixth Districts. He was also a member of the Street Crimes Unit and the Gang Squad. After merger, Bates served as a patrol officer in the First Division. He was promoted to sergeant in August 2005. He served as a sergeant in the Second Division where he supervised the mid-watch platoon, FLEX Unit, and Detectives Unit. In 2012, Bates was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Fourth Division. He also served in the Second Division, where he supervised the mid-watch platoon and Division Resource Officers (DROs).   After being promoted to the rank of major, Bates commanded the Fourth Division. Major Bates served on the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team for 14 years. He served on the SWAT Team as an officer, sergeant, and lieutenant. He was appointed as the Assistant Commander in 2012 and Commander in 2015. Bates has also served on two (2) task forces which were created to address violent crime in the community. Major Bates is a graduate of Xavier University and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Business. He is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officers Course.

Fourth Division

Major Joshua Judah Major Judah has been a police officer for 16 years, joining the former Louisville Division of Police in 2001. He served as a patrol officer all across Louisville, in neighborhoods ranging from Crescent Hill, Clifton, The Highlands, Downtown, Phoenix Hill, Old Louisville, Russell, Shawnee and Portland. He served as a detective in the Crimes Against Children Unit for three years, investigating physical, sexual, and internet crimes against children across Louisville Metro. He was promoted to sergeant in 2009, where he served in the 3rd Division in southwest Louisville. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2011 and served in the Chief’s Office and the 4th Division. Major Judah was most recently the commander of LMPD’s Technical Services Unit, which encompasses all of LMPD’s technical projects. Examples of these projects include body cameras, in-car cameras, investigative software applications, in-car computers, and gunshot detection systems. Major Judah was also responsible for the Real Time Crime Center, which monitors LMPD’s nearly 200 surveillance cameras, as well as the Crime Information Center, which analyzes crime trends and provides strategic intelligence for the LMPD and its law-enforcement partners in the region. Major Judah holds a BA in History from Centre College and is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville. He was the recipient of LMPD’s Commanding Officer of the Year award in 2015. He is a graduate of the Academy of Police Supervision class 39 at Eastern Kentucky University, the 127th Session of the Southern Police Institute’s Administrative Officer’s Course at the University of Louisville, and the 263rd Session of the FBI National Academy. Major Judah lives in Louisville with his wife Katie and their daughters, Miriam and Leah.
