New traffic pattern for drivers on Bradford Drive

We want to thank our friends at Public Works for adding stop signs on Bradford Drive at the intersection of Glen Oak Drive. The new signs are accompanied by flashing yellow lighted “New Traffic Pattern” signs and flashing lights at the stop sign. These measures are going to be in place during the initial months while drivers learn the new traffic pattern. It is our understanding these flashing lighted elements will be removed after six months in order to put them in to service at other new installations.

Attention District 10 residents: New federal dollars available to house Louisville's most vulnerable citizens

Wellspring is pleased to partner with Louisville Metro Housing Authority (LMHA) in the rollout of newly available federal funds through the HUD 811 Mainstream Housing Choice Voucher Program. The vouchers provide new subsidies for Affordable Housing to people at-risk of homelessness or institutionalization. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded $98.5 million to 285 local housing authorities, and Louisville is one of the recipient locations and started with 89 vouchers. The Program provides funding to housing agencies to assist non-elderly people with disabilities who are: transitioning out of institutional or other separated settings; at serious risk of institutionalization; homeless; or at-risk of becoming homeless. Wellspring is a Louisville non-profit (501(c)3) promoting mental health recovery and supports individuals in building healthy and hopeful lives through housing and psychiatric rehabilitative services. “We are thrilled to be one of three Louisville agencies,” said Wellspring CEO Katharine Dobbins, LCSW. “We see the need every day for more subsidized housing for persons with mental illness who live on limited incomes. Many of the housing programs we utilize require homelessness and we are excited that the new vouchers can provide assistance to those at-risk before they are actually on the streets or in shelters.” Wellspring will provide case management and peer support as needed to eligible participants. Wellspring also offers Crisis Stabilization Programs, extensive Supportive Housing, an Affordable Housing Program with 120 units of deeply subsidized rental housing and a Supportive Employment Program that helps clients find meaningful employment. These programs support clients along their individual paths to recovery. Wellspring facilitates community integration by reducing stigma and strengthening personal and neighborhood connections. Meals on Wheels needs volunteers in our area

Volunteers are needed to deliver a hot lunchtime meal to seniors within our area, between 10 a.m. and noon. A weekly commitment of approximately two hours is desired.

We will train and supply equipment for your use, but you must provide your own transportation.

Leaf drop off sites

Louisville Metro residents not mulching autumn leaves into their lawns or using curbside collection will have the option to dispose of them at one of three drop-off sites beginning November 6.

Metro Public Works is offering a free leaf drop-off service November 6 through December 1. Drop-off will not be available on November 22 and 23 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Only loose leaves will be accepted. Containers used to bring leaves to the drop-off sites must be disposed of off-site by residents.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  Recent studies and reports continue to indicate women who experience sexual harassment, domestic violence and/or sexual assault have a corresponding increase in risk for hypertension, depression, anxiety, poor sleep, and even diabetes. Physical battering puts women at risk of traumatic brain injury which can result in cognitive impairment.  Additional risks are known to impact children exposed to domestic violence. Growing up in a home with violence puts children at increased risk of poor health outcomes and of being either abused or engaging in abusive behavior as an adult. We must interrupt the cycle of violence to end it. City seeking tree for "Light Up Louisville" event

Louisville Metro is looking for someone to donate the large Christmas tree that will stand in Jefferson Square Park through the holidays.  The tree should be a spruce or fir, about 40 feet tall and well-shaped. The city will cut and transport the tree to its prominent spot across from Metro Hall at Sixth and Jefferson streets. Anyone interested in donating a tree should call Metro 311. The tree donor will attend the Light Up Louisville sponsor reception as a featured guest of Mayor Fischer for the Light Up celebration. Light Up Louisville is held annually on the day after Thanksgiving. This year, the event, in its 38th year, will be held on Friday, November 23.

Now through November 4 - Jack O'Lantern Spectacular

The Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular began in Oxford, Massachusetts in 1988. The Louisville event, celebrating its sixth year in 2018, is held in Iroquois Park with 5,000 carved pumpkins lining a ¼-mile walking trail, illuminated at night as an “art show”. The show runs daily from dusk to 11 p.m., during the week (Sunday-Thursday), and closes at midnight on Friday & Saturday. October 27 - Jim King MUSCL Senior Wellness Center yard sale

The MUSCL Senior Wellness Center's fall fundraising yard sale will take place Saturday, October 27 at the center at 1016 E. Burnett Avenue.  The sale starts at 8 a.m., and vendors may arrive at 7 a.m. to set up. Booth rentals are available for $10 for an eight-foot table. The sale will be held outdoors, weather permitting, in addition to an indoor yard sale room. Due to a warehouse clearance, we have an abundance of sewing supplies including: elastic, buttons, thread, needles, binding tape/seam tape-all sizes and colors, crocheting forks, knitting needles, including circular and big boye, latch hooks, tie backs, zippers. November 6 - Need a ride to the polls? Lyft and Uber to offer free rides on Election Day

Ride hailing apps Uber and Lyft are planning to offer free rides on Election Day as part of a larger effort to "drive the vote."

On November 6, a special Election Day button will show up in the Uber app. Riders can use the button to find their polling place and book a ride in "with just a few taps," according to Uber.

Uber is also offering political campaigns and organizations the chance to purchase promo codes they can give to their workers or voters on Election Day.

Louisville Nature Center events

November 5 and 6 - Out of School Day Camps

When JCPS is closed, LNC has a camp for your kids. They will get a healthy dose of Vitamin N (N for Nature) while they are out of school. Pack their lunch and let them play nature games, hike through the preserve, make arts and crafts and meet the critters who live at the Louisville Nature Center.  This camp is for kids ages 6 to 10 and space is limited so register early. Admission is $40 per day.

November 9 - next monthly Parent's Night Out Enjoy a few hours without the kids - shop, see a movie, or enjoy a quiet dinner. Your kids will enjoy playing nature games, crafting, visiting the bird blind, and hiking. Dinner will be provided. Kids 6 to 12 are eligible. Parent's Nights Out will be Friday, November 9, and Friday, December 7 Nights Out will be from 6 to 10 p.m., and space is limited. Cost is $15 for members, $20 for non-members. November 8 - 53rd annual Schnitzelburg #1 Citizen Dinner

Schnitzelburg's #1 Citizen will be honored November 8 for outstanding service to the community. 

This tradition began more than 50 years ago. The first #1 Citizen, Kenny Schmied, quietly served Schnitzelburg each day, whether out in the street or in church, without asking for thanks or recognition. He did these things simply because he loved “ole Schnitzelburg.” Using Kenny as inspiration, a group of Schnitzelburgers decided to annually recognize one selfless individual.

Traditionally, a German style dinner is served, local dignitaries attend, and the #1 Citizen is honored with a certificate, a personalized Louisville Slugger baseball bat, and a personalized jacket.

The #1 Citizen Dinner is November 8 at St. Elizabeth's cafeteria from 5 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 and will be available at Hauck's Handy Store, at all upcoming SACC General Meetings, and at the door the night of the event.

Louisville Metro Government and LG&E partner to install electric vehicle charging station in Seneca Park

Drivers of electric vehicles in Louisville have yet another place to “fill up” their batteries with the installation of a new public charging station at Seneca Park through Louisville Gas and Electric Company’s EV Charging Station Program. Seneca Park was chosen using data collected by Drive Clean Louisville, a Metro Government initiative that promotes the benefits of alternative fuel vehicles. A survey asked the public to identify places in Louisville in need of vehicle chargers, and Seneca Park was among the top spots named.  LG&E is locating this and other stations around the Louisville area through its EV Charging Station Program to meet the growing demand for accessible, convenient charging facilities as more motorists embrace electric vehicles. Located on Rock Creek Drive near the restrooms and tennis courts, the Seneca Park charging station will be available to the public for an hourly fee during normal park hours. LMAS Pets of the Week

Zander is one of the friendliest, happiest dogs you could have the pleasure of meeting. The approximately six-year-old Cocker Spaniel mix is always smiling and doesn’t mind posing for photos. Zander is also friendly with most dogs his size. He knows some commands and appears to be housetrained. Zander weighs approximately 30 pounds. His adoption fee is a minimum $125 donation to a Pay It Forward Program. Zander is already neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on vaccinations. October 27 - BAFOL Spotlight 4 Autism Concert

The Booker Autism Foundation of Learning, Inc.(BAFOL) SpotLIGHT4AUTISM Concert is Saturday, October 27, 2018 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Louisville Memorial Auditorium, 970 South Fourth Street. 

International Hip Hop Sensation Jethro Sheeran, better known as aLonestar, will be performing alongside reggae, R & B, Jazz and hip hop artists to raise money to help children with autism. Tickets ($25) are available at Eventbrite. 

October 29 - Enjoy the Scenic Loop car-free and Hayride on the Hill in Cherokee Park

A new fall tradition will begin on Monday, October 29, as area residents will be able to enjoy use of the Scenic Loop in Cherokee Park car-free and also attend the first-ever Hayride on the Hill, located at Baringer Hill from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. that day.  The Scenic Loop and various access points to it will be closed to vehicle traffic beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday, October 29, and will reopen at 9 p.m. that same day. Access to Cherokee Golf Course will still be available via Alexander Road. Meanwhile, at Baringer Hill, the Hayride on the Hill event will include food, beverage and beer vending; free hayrides around the Scenic Loop; live music, face painting and member treat bags provided by Olmsted Parks Conservancy.

November 3 - Shred paper for free

Louisville residents are invited to bring unneeded documents to be shredded and disposed of at a free event on November 3. Citizens can protect themselves from identify theft by bringing items to the  Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center, 1030 Phillips Lane, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Businesses may not participate in this event. All paper materials will be shredded onsite and recycled. Shredding donated by Shred-It.

November 3 - Tree Planting in the Portland Neighborhood

Help restore the tree canopy! Trees Louisville will be planting approximately 150 trees in the Portland Neighborhood on Saturday, November 3 and they need lots of additional volunteers from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Reminders from Solid Waste Management Services: 

With so much infrastructure work and utility construction going on throughout District 10, garbage and recycle pick-up may interrupted or delayed. Solid Waste Management Services is making every effort to get to every street during this period.

If you're renovating or remodeling, have a plan for disposing of the resulting debris. Construction and demolition debris in Louisville garbage and junk pickup collection is prohibited by ordinance. Collection crews have recently been reminded to enforce the ordinance consistently.  Options for disposal of construction and demolition debris include taking it to the Waste Reduction Center on Meriwether Avenue. Fees are variable depending on volume. More information and a fee schedule are available here. Or consider hiring a hauling company or rent a dumpster.

RecycleCoach app will help Louisville Metro customers with collection reminders, recycling information and more

The new RecycleCoach app features notifications about garbage, recycling, bulk waste, and yard waste collection services.  RecycleCoach will help Solid Waste Management Services communicate better by sending special messages such as bulk waste rule reminders or suspension of services for yard waste, etc. The app also has a “what goes where” feature to allow a person to input a certain item to get information on disposal or recycling.  Download from the App Store or Google Play.

Beginning July 14, 2018, the Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) will investigate and impose fines on anyone who comes into contact with an underground natural gas line while digging without having contacted 811 to have the lines located before digging. Contact 811 (call 8-1-1 or submit an online locate request at 811.com) before you dig and make sure that anyone doing excavation on your behalf contacts 811 two working days before they start.  New LouieConnect site connects people to help

Louisville non-profits have launched a new website to help connect people in need of food, shelter and more. Metro United Way and the Family Scholar House partnered to create LouieConnect, modeling it on a similar site created in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When someone uses LouieConnect, the web-based app asks for basic information and then lists applicable resources nearby — from food pantries to shelters to career centers to financial literacy programs.

Discounted Recycle Carts still available for $28 for District 10 residents - in 95-gallon or 64 gallon size

Kentucky's Republican-dominated legislature voted to impose sales taxes on services on April 2. Now, services such as landscaping, janitorial services, grooming for small pets, fitness centers, car repair and items sold by governments are subject to a six percent tax. 

This affects our discounted recycle cart program. The normal purchase price for the carts is $50, plus six percent sales tax, for a total cost of $53. 

Metro Council District 10 will continue to provide $25 towards the purchase of this cart. Constituents will be asked to pay the difference of $28 going forward. 

The discounted recycle cart program has been re-instituted by Councilman Mulvihill and now offers two sizes: the 95-gallon carts and smaller 64 gallon carts.  The photos at left show the sizes (64 gallon on the left).

The carts normally cost $50, but Councilman Mulvihill has made them available for residents of District 10 for a reduced cost of $28. Please call 574-1110 or email us for the form. The reduced cost recycle carts will be available on a first come first served basis until the funds are depleted. This offer is available to urban service district residents.

Sign up for LENSAlert (Smart911)

Click here to sign up for the LENSAlert (Louisville Emergency Notification System).  In addition to receiving notifications, individuals can create a Safety Profile for themselves and their household that can include any information they want 9-1-1 and first responders to have in the event of an emergency. When individuals make an emergency call, their Safety Profile is automatically displayed to the 9-1-1 call taker, allowing them to send the right responders to the right location with the right information. Information about medical history, allergies to medication, number of residents in a home and even a picture of the family dog can all be added to a Safety Profile.
