Introduction & Intermediate Computer Classes

The Office of Multicultural Ministry’s Catholic Enrichment Center will offer introduction and intermediate computer classes for the general public. Learn computer skills at your own speed, whether you need assistance with email (electronic mail), the Internet, basic typing, or Microsoft Word. “Introduction to Computers (Keyboarding)” will take place on Monday afternoons (September 17, 24, October 1, 8, 15, & 22, 2018) from 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. and “Intermediate Computer Techniques (Intro to Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Publisher)” will take place on Tuesday afternoons (September 18, 25, October 2, 9, 16, & 23, 2018) from 5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. All are welcome! Enhanced After School Tutoring Program & Cultural Institute

Our students are coming home these days with more questions, fewer books and the achievement gap continues to increase. The Office of Multicultural Ministry’s Catholic Enrichment Center is offering homework assistance and basic academic review for students in grades K-12 to assist in bridging that gap. Students will be exposed to alternative learning exercises provided by experienced educators. Tutoring will take place on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 5:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. The Cultural Institute will be offered again this year starting October 15, 2018. Sewing will be offered on Monday, Dance on Tuesday and Arts and Crafts on Thursday. The daily tutoring sessions are by appointment only and must be scheduled in advance. Computer Coding Game Development

The Catholic Enrichment Center (CEC) of the Archdiocese of Louisville’s Office of Multicultural Ministry will offer a workshop on computer coding. Coding is what makes it possible for us to create computer software, apps and websites. Computer programming is the process of writing instructions that get executed by computers. The instructions, also known as code, are written in a programming language which the computer can understand and use to perform a task or solve a problem. These sessions will give youth the basic skills for positive computer interaction. Students will be guided through coding actions which will provide them with the start of a personalized computer game. This workshop is for youth in grades 5-6 and will take place on Monday and Tuesday from 6:45 p.m. – 7:45 p.m. starting Monday, October 22, 2018. There are only 5 spaces available and it is free. Swahili Mass

The Archdiocese of Louisville’s Office of Multicultural Ministry will host its inaugural Swahili Mass (Kiswahili Misa) on Saturday, October 27, 2018, at 11:00 a.m., St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church located at 3112 West Broadway, Louisville, KY 40211. Join Fr. Deogratias Ssamba, A.J. for the Mass. All are welcome! A light reception will follow in the Catholic Enrichment Center adjacent to the church. Swahili is a Bantu language widely used as a lingua franca (a language that is adopted as a common language between speakers whose native languages are different) in East Africa and having official status in several countries. Many members of our Catholic community speak Swahili. The Mass in Swahili will continue to be offered once a month. Information on future masses will be announced. 33rd Annual African American Catholic Day of Reflection & the  

32nd Annual African American Catholic History Celebration

The Archdiocese of Louisville’s Office of Multicultural Ministry and its African American Catholic Ministry will host its 33rd Annual African American Catholic Day of Reflection (originally scheduled on Saturday, September 29, 2018) on Saturday, November 3, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Catholic Enrichment Center, 3146 West Broadway, Louisville, KY 40211. This will be in conjunction with the 32nd Annual African American Catholic History Celebration. It will be celebrated at the beginning and end of the day. The theme is “From Maintenance to Mission”. Some of the workshop presenters for the Day of Reflection include Rev. Maurice Emelu – Keynote Speaker, Dr. Veronica Morgan-Lee, Deacon Royce Winters, Ms. Pam Harris, Deacon James Turner, Mr. Tristan Evans, Mrs. M. Annette Mandley-Turner, Ms. Charmein Weathers, Ms. Janice Mulligan and more. This event is an implementation of the National Black Catholic Pastoral Plan and the archdiocesan Strategic Plan. October is Disability Awareness Month.

You might see something about it in the news but probably not.  Unlike other minorities, people with disabilities don't have a good public relations campaign. They're either trying to cure us or rehab us.

By the way, the proper term is people with disabilities, disabled people.  No cutesy stuff like "physically challenged."  That's a term that gives us a false attribute; it makes it sound neat to be us: we are physically challenged!  And, please, no "differently abled," or "able bodied," and three words about "crippled children”:  we grow up.

To be honest, disability involves many aspects of life so sometimes it's hard to explain why our history, our issues, are relevant or should be of interest to you.  Media coverage of disability too often focuses on courage and cure and overcoming or the cost of health care. (We, by the way, know excellent ways to curb the high cost of disability but no one asks us.)

Why, you may be asking yourself, should you be more aware of disability?  Well, when I started in this disability advocacy business forty years ago, there weren't so many of us, only about 10 percent.  Now we are over 20 percent.  Disabled people are not thought of as a minority even though we are one of the largest and the most diverse in nationality, ethnicity, gender, age . . . So I'd be surprised if you didn't know one of us or aren't one of us, especially if you were here forty years ago!

Disability Art and Culture . . . and Cool.  Remember the song "Save the Last Dance for Me,"and how the man tells the woman to go ahead and dance as long as they leave together at the end of the night?  It's so romantic.  She dances. He watches. And when the music's over, they put their arms around each other and go home. It was a huge Drifters' hit in the 1960s.  The back-story: The songwriter was Doc Pomus, a blues singer who had polio and used crutches and a wheelchair. His wife was a Broadway actress who liked going out on the town.

Parents Needed for Overdose Awareness Educational Event

Emily Walden, coordinator of Fed Up! International Awareness Day, alongside The Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation will hold an event on October 30th, here in Jefferson County. There will be 8,000 JCPS students attending this event to educate and bring awareness to the opioid epidemic. To make this educational event as impactful as possible, the foundation is asking any parent(s) who have lost a child to an overdose to participate in the event.   Participation:  A film will be played, the lights will go down, and when the lights come back on parents will be on stage holding a picture of their child.  This will have a huge impact on the kids attending. It is very important to show students that this epidemic is everywhere, no matter where you live -- this has affected all areas of Jefferson County and our state. WaterStep Provides Water and Disinfectant for Desperate Rural Communities in North Carolina

Louisville-based non-profit WaterStep has returned from a week-long trip to aid those affected by Hurricane Florence in North Carolina. Five members from the organization left Louisville on Sunday, Sept. 23 in trucks packed with ten disaster relief kits that were able to purify water, and generate chlorine and bleach for disinfection and sanitation. They set up base at First Baptist Church in Willington, N.C., and then traveled into surrounding rural areas each day. Many of these communities rely on well water for their safe water needs, which all had been contaminated for over a week. WaterStep first set up two water purification systems in Sneads Ferry, N.C. about 45 miles north of Wilmington, making contaminated water safe for drinking and bathing, along with a bleach maker for disinfectant. The systems will stay with a community organization in Sneads Ferry for future use in the event of another disaster. Then, after a chance meeting with a 6-year-old girl and her mother at McDonalds, the team diverted to Atkinson, N.C. and set up as a disaster response center. A large purification system was installed in a nearby cafeteria close to the town hall and a bleach station was set up at a local church. Water purification training was provided throughout the day, and chlorine generators and BleachMakers were given to emergency management officials to be distributed to other communities.                 Next was a two-day trip to rural Fair Bluff, N.C., where most of the main street through town was still under water. They installed a much needed bleach manufacturing station and a water purification system, and provided training for the local Fire Departments on how to use the equipment. Finally, four mobile disaster kits and 20 bleach makers were sent to emergency management teams and a church in Lumberton, N.C. working with hurricane refugees. The leadership in Lumberton was trained on the equipment by connections at Lafayette Baptist Church who have a history of working with WaterStep on projects in Central America. "While WaterStep is mostly focused on developing countries, we had friends working in the areas hit by Hurricane Florence, so we chose to offer our assistance and respond to this domestic disaster," says Mark Hogg, Founder and CEO of WaterStep. "We were quickly directed to rural areas where weary local volunteer emergency teams had no support, there was no disinfectant bleach on store shelves, and there was very limited resources. As in the developing world, our training and equipment was able to expand possibilities and strengthen confidence for the workers to provide access to safe water and disinfectant." WaterStep develops and manufactures tools that can be used to provide safe water and disinfectant in the developing world and in disaster situations. These award-winning tools include the innovative M-100 chlorine generator, which can generate thousands of gallons of safe water a day, and the portable BleachMaker, which provides medical-strength disinfectant. In disaster situations when there's a need for large amounts of water for bathing, general cleaning, sanitation, etc., WaterStep's tools can provide chlorinated water for disaster relief. WaterStep has responded to 11 different natural disasters since 2009 including the earthquake in Costa Rica in 2009, the earthquake in Haiti in 2010, the flooding in Pakistan in 2010 and 2011, the typhoon in the Philippines in 2013, the typhoon in India in 2013, the earthquake in Nepal in 2015, the earthquake in Ecuador in 2016, the landslide in Colombia in 2017, the hurricane in Puerto Rico in 2017, the volcano in Guatemala in 2018 and the hurricane in North Carolina in 2018. ABOUT THE FEATURED SPEAKERS:

Diane Ravitch is the former assistant secretary of education under Lamar Alexander (1991-1993) and was a staunch proponent of today’s most popular ideas for restructuring schools, including privatization, standardized testing, punitive accountability, and the feckless multiplication of charter schools. In a stunning about-face in 2010, she published The Death and Life of the Great American School System - How Testing and Choice Are Undermining Education, followed by Reign of Error - The Hoax of the Privatization Movement and the Danger to America’s Public Schools in 2013. That same year, she co-founded Network for Public Education, which fights to save our public schools.

Jitu Brown is a Chicago native, former public school teacher, and community organizer who serves as national director of the Journey for Justice, an alliance of grassroots groups fighting against privatization and for sustainable community schools in 30 cities. Brown has been an education activist for the past 26 years. In 2015, he led a successful 34-day hunger strike to prevent the closing of Dyett High School in Chicago’s south side.

Sue Legg is the former education chair for the League of Women Voters in Florida. She writes the education blog for the League of Women Voters of Florida, which is followed by members of other Leagues and non-members, as well. A one-time public school teacher, Dr. Legg later directed the Office of Instructional Resources at the University of Florida. While there, she managed several statewide K-12 and college assessment programs for Florida’s Department of Education. Dr. Legg served two terms as chair of the College Board National Advisory Committee. She also directed the Partnership in Global Learning, a consortium of universities in Brazil, Mexico and Florida to collaborate on instructional design for online learning.

Speed Art Museum: New Exhibition

Keltie Ferris: *O*P*E*N*

The Speed Art Museum is proud to present a solo exhibition of paintings and works on paper by the artist Keltie Ferris. Born in Louisville in 1977, Ferris offers a fresh approach to abstract painting and the exploration of the artist’s identity through the body. Featuring artworks from the last eight years, Keltie Ferris: *O*P*E*N* celebrates an artist who thoughtfully examines the language and history of painting and the meaning of being an artist today.

For the past fourteen years Ferris has employed techniques that defy expectations. Using spray paint, she adopts a language associated with graffiti and home décor and deftly applies it to her canvases, creating effects which range from pointillist explosions and vibrational blurs, to arabesque curves and swirls of lines. Her use of the palette knife, particularly in recent years, led Ferris to build up thick impasto areas of color that project forward on the canvas, enhancing the illusion of depth.

Through this survey of work, Keltie Ferris: *O*P*E*N* charts an evolution in Ferris’s practice, from her paintings that evoke star constellations, digital pixilation, and networks of waves and light, to her most recent body of work, which prominently uses spray-painted lines, raised polygonal shapes, and areas of erasure, to create dynamic and complex compositions.

In addition to paintings, this exhibition will include a series of new body prints. Ferris creates these prints by covering herself in oil, laying atop a sheet of paper, and applying pigment to the paper’s surface. The resulting prints have an intense, vibrant color and a deliberately androgynous appearance, highlighting the artist’s fluid gender identity.  Ferris began creating body prints in 2013, drawing inspiration from Jasper Johns’s “Skin” prints and David Hammons’s body prints from the 1960s. In contrast to Yves Klein’s Anthropometry series, in Ferris’s work the female body becomes an active agent in performing and blurring gender identities. Through her prints Ferris highlights a personal, indexical relationship to her work, while simultaneously summoning the idea of an army of citizens or an electorate.

About the artist:

Keltie Ferris lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Her artwork has been featured in the New York Times, Art in America, Artforum, The Brooklyn Rail, and ARTnews.

Ferris graduated with a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and an MFA from the Yale School of Art in 2006. Her recent solo exhibitions include Body Prints and Paintings at the University Art Museum at SUNY Albany, New York (2016); Paintings and Body Prints at Mitchell-Innes & Nash, New York (2015); Keltie Ferris: Doomsday Boogie at the Santa Monica Museum of Art, Los Angeles (2014); and Man Eaters at the Kemper Museum, Kansas City (2009-10).  In 2014 she was awarded the Rosenthal Family Foundation Award in Painting by the Academy of Arts and Letters.

TARC To Launch MyTARC Fare Cards January 2019

New (cashless) ‘Tap & Go’ system saves money and time LOUISVILLE, Ky. (October 03, 2018) —Transit Authority of River City (TARC) will launch MyTARC, a new ‘Tap & Go’ fare card system on all TARC buses beginning the first full week of January 2019. The new system will feature a user-friendly web portal allowing customers to purchase fare media on-the-go, smart fare boxes with ‘Tap & Go’ readers on each bus, and the freedom to pay fare with a simple “tap”, replacing the 20-year-old fare box that only accepted cash and paper tickets. MyTARC will offer savings, security, convenience and a fast payment method. “We are excited that TARC is moving forward with technology that will allow our customers to enjoy a more efficient way of paying and traveling throughout the community,” said TARC Executive Director J. Barry Barker. “With this new system, we will continue to monitor three critical components for its success: necessary training, public engagement, and reviewing feedback.” The MyTARC Mobile Bus will be hitting the streets throughout the community during the months of October, November and December, allowing customers to purchase cards, learn how to use the farebox and speak with the TARC Team about the new system. Passengers can also purchase their MyTARC card online, at the Nia Center and at Union Station. Fares will not increase. Adult one-way fare using the MyTARC card will be $1.50—just as it is today when buying tickets in advance—compared to $1.75 with cash. Cash payment – exact fare only – will remain an option for a single ride. Passengers with a MyTARC card will receive a free electronic transfer good for two hours from initial boarding. TARC will no longer offer paper transfers. With the ability to give customers up to three years of transactions on one card, TARC is confident that passengers will find the MyTARC system to be smart, simple and fast. Crime Mapping

First Division

Major Eric Johnson Johnson began his career in 1999 with the Louisville Division of Police (LPD). Prior to merger, he served as a patrol officer and a flex detective in the former Third and Fifth Districts. After merger, Johnson served in the Fourth Division and Metro Narcotics. In August 2005, Johnson was promoted to Sergeant and served in the First Division as a patrol and Division Detective supervisor.  In April 2013, Johnson was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Second Division.  In October 2013, Johnson became the Strategic Planning Lieutenant, where he oversaw the department's strategic plan, the Mayor’s LouieStat program, the department’s response to the President's Report on 21st Century Policing and a series of performance improvement initiatives.   After being promoted to the rank of major, Johnson commanded the Administrative Services Division. Major Johnson is a graduate of Southern High School and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville (U of L). He has received certifications in LEAN and Six Sigma. He also earned certification as a Balanced Scorecard Professional in advanced strategic planning.

Second Division

Major Ryan Bates Bates began his law enforcement career in August 1997 with the Louisville Division of Police. He served in the former Second, Fourth, and Sixth Districts. He was also a member of the Street Crimes Unit and the Gang Squad. After merger, Bates served as a patrol officer in the First Division. He was promoted to sergeant in August 2005. He served as a sergeant in the Second Division where he supervised the mid-watch platoon, FLEX Unit, and Detectives Unit. In 2012, Bates was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Fourth Division. He also served in the Second Division, where he supervised the mid-watch platoon and Division Resource Officers (DROs).   After being promoted to the rank of major, Bates commanded the Fourth Division. Major Bates served on the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team for 14 years. He served on the SWAT Team as an officer, sergeant, and lieutenant. He was appointed as the Assistant Commander in 2012 and Commander in 2015. Bates has also served on two (2) task forces which were created to address violent crime in the community. Major Bates is a graduate of Xavier University and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Business. He is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officers Course.

Fourth Division

Major Joshua Judah Major Judah has been a police officer for 16 years, joining the former Louisville Division of Police in 2001. He served as a patrol officer all across Louisville, in neighborhoods ranging from Crescent Hill, Clifton, The Highlands, Downtown, Phoenix Hill, Old Louisville, Russell, Shawnee and Portland. He served as a detective in the Crimes Against Children Unit for three years, investigating physical, sexual, and internet crimes against children across Louisville Metro. He was promoted to sergeant in 2009, where he served in the 3rd Division in southwest Louisville. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2011 and served in the Chief’s Office and the 4th Division. Major Judah was most recently the commander of LMPD’s Technical Services Unit, which encompasses all of LMPD’s technical projects. Examples of these projects include body cameras, in-car cameras, investigative software applications, in-car computers, and gunshot detection systems. Major Judah was also responsible for the Real Time Crime Center, which monitors LMPD’s nearly 200 surveillance cameras, as well as the Crime Information Center, which analyzes crime trends and provides strategic intelligence for the LMPD and its law-enforcement partners in the region. Major Judah holds a BA in History from Centre College and is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville. He was the recipient of LMPD’s Commanding Officer of the Year award in 2015. He is a graduate of the Academy of Police Supervision class 39 at Eastern Kentucky University, the 127th Session of the Southern Police Institute’s Administrative Officer’s Course at the University of Louisville, and the 263rd Session of the FBI National Academy. Major Judah lives in Louisville with his wife Katie and their daughters, Miriam and Leah.
