The Butchertown Neighborhood Association (BNA) is seeking volunteers for the 7th Annual Porktoberfest on Friday, October 5 from 5:00 – 10:00 p.m. at Copper & Kings, 1121 E. Washington Street. Admission is free, but patrons will need to purchase tickets for tasting from 15 competing vendors. $2 equals one tasting ticket. For more information, please click here.

Cleaning up for the fall? Plan to attend an upcoming free shredding, recycling and bulky waste drop off event on Saturday, October 6, from 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. The event will be at Ballard High School, 6000 Brownsboro Road, with the entrance to the event being from Herr Lane only.
The event is open to all Jefferson County residents with a valid ID. No items from businesses will be accepted. No trailers longer than 16 feet in length will be allowed on the event site.
Items accepted include tires, electronics, metal, furniture, mattresses, carpet, household recyclables, and household hazardous waste. For a complete list of hazardous waste items allowed please click here.
Items NOT ACCEPTED are tree and limb debris, construction and demolition material, shingles, and appliances.
LMPD will be on hand to help you dispose of any unwanted or unused prescription drugs. Safely getting rid of your unused, unwanted or expired drugs is one of the first steps to preventing accidental poisonings, drug diversion, drug misuse and addiction.
Habitat ReStore will also be on hand to take any household items that still have life left in them. Habitat ReStore is a home improvement store and donation center that sells new and gently used furniture, appliances, home accessories, building materials and more to the public at a fraction of the retail price.

St. Matthews Fire & Rescue is hosting a Firefighter Rib Cook-Off from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. at St. Matthews Fire Department, 240 Sears Avenue. This event benefits the WHAS Crusade for Children and Norton Children’s Hospital Foundation. Teams from fire departments across Kentuckiana come out to compete for bragging rights on who can produce the best ribs, and the local community is invited to attend the family friendly festivities. Whitehall House & Gardens, 3110 Lexington Road, is pleased to announce that it will host a 3-day figure painting workshop at historic Whitehall, with noted artist and instructor John Michael Carter. The workshop series will take place October 10-12, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The cost of tuition is $450/person. A $100 deposit is required to reserve a spot, with the balance due the first day of the workshop. Students should bring a brown-bag lunch, but drinks will be provided. It’s time to clean house and get ready for another junk collection if you live in the 9th District Urban Services District (USD). You may begin setting out your junk Friday, October 19 in the afternoon. All junk must be set out by Monday, October 22 at 6:00 a.m. Some items (hazardous materials, construction debris, etc.) are not collected. The deadline for registering to vote in Kentucky before the 2018 General Election is rapidly approaching and it’s easier than ever to do so.
Tuesday, October 9 is the last day to register to vote in the November 6 election. Kentuckians can now register to vote, and check and update their registrations online, at this website.
Voters who will be outside Jefferson County on Election Day are among those who can vote absentee. More information about voting absentee, both by mail and in-house, is here.
If you qualify to vote by absentee ballot, you can do that now at the Jefferson County Clerk’s Election Center, which has moved to 701 West Ormsby Avenue, Suite 301.

Saturday, September 29: Fourth Annual Friends of the University of Louisville School of Music 5K Run/Walk Cherokee Park. The race starts at Hogan’s Fountain Pavilion and will feature live music at every turn of the course. Top finishers will receive awards. This event is open to all ages with proceeds going to help support our mission of sponsoring scholarships for music students at the U of L School of Music.
