October 1 - deadline for nominations for #1 Citizen Dinner

Who is Schnitzelburg's #1 Citizen? Each year, members of the community honor a person who has provided outstanding service to the Schnitzelburg community. A subcommittee of the Schnitzelburg Area Community Council reviews the nominations and determines the winner for that year.
This tradition began more than 50 years ago. The first #1 Citizen, Kenny Schmied, quietly served Schnitzelburg each day, whether out in the street or in church, without asking for thanks or recognition. He did these things simply because he loved “ole Schnitzelburg.” Using Kenny as inspiration, a group of Schnitzelburgers decided to annually recognize one selfless individual.
Traditionally, a German style dinner is served, local dignitaries attend, and the #1 Citizen is honored with a certificate, a personalized Louisville Slugger baseball bat, and a personalized jacket.
The #1 Citizen Dinner is November 8 at St. Elizabeth's cafeteria from 5 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 and will be available at Hauck's Handy Store, at all upcoming SACC General Meetings, and at the door the night of the event.

October 3 - Project Homeless Connect/VA Stand Down to aid homeless people
Louisville’s homeless population will have an opportunity to access services, information and assistance in a one-stop environment at the 2018 Project Homeless Connect/VA Stand Down, on Wednesday, October 3. Resources available at the event will include food, clothing, medical evaluations, help with employment, education and benefit services, State ID’s, and many other forms of assistance.
The event takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. (entry doors will close at 1 p.m.) at The Salvation Army (Old Male High School) campus at 911 S. Brook St. in Louisville. Several TARC buses will provide access throughout the day from emergency shelters to the event site at no cost courtesy of TARC. The event is coordinated by the Robley Rex Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services, Coalition for the Homeless and other community partners including The Salvation Army.
The Project Homeless Connect/VA Stand Down (PHC/Stand Down) is an annual one-day community outreach project where representatives from community service organizations come together to address the collective needs of the homeless during a single visit. This event is made possible by the work of hundreds of volunteers and resources from the Robley Rex VAMC, Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs, Louisville Metro Government, Coalition for the Homeless, and Louisville Metro Council.
The latest numbers from the 2017 Homeless Census indicate 6,217 individuals were homeless at some point in Louisville last year -- either on the streets, in homeless shelters or accessing services through Louisville’s homeless service providers. A variety of factors can lead to homelessness and often these individuals may be victims of domestic violence, disabled, veterans or senior citizens.
At last year’s event approximately 400 persons participated receiving a variety of individual services including State of Kentucky ID cards, flu shots and other medical exams and services, housing linkages, mainstream benefit access (SSI/SSDI), clothing, food and general case management services. The “Stand Down” event, named for the military concept of renewal, personal care, etc., is replicated from a national service delivery model that has proven to be crucial in eliminating barriers to housing, employment, education and the myriad of other factors that contribute to long-term homelessness.
“This is a vital event for our community because it allows our service providers to connect much-needed resources to our homeless residents", stated Gena Redmon Harris, director of the city’s Office of Resilience and Community Services. “It also allows us a great opportunity to measure the needs of our homeless population so that we can come together to be more responsive”.
Offered again this year will be a foot-washing service provided by community volunteers and the Coalition for the Homeless. Many individuals experiencing homelessness have issues with their feet due to diabetes, frostbite and other exposure issues. Every participant at Project Homeless Connect/Stand Down will be invited to soak their feet and have them examined by medical volunteers.

Louisville non-profits have launched a new website to help connect people in need of food, shelter and more. Metro United Way and the Family Scholar House partnered to create LouieConnect, modeling it on a similar site created in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When someone uses LouieConnect, the web-based app asks for basic information and then lists applicable resources nearby — from food pantries to shelters to career centers to financial literacy programs. |
Discounted Recycle Carts still available for $28 for District 10 residents - in 95-gallon or 64 gallon size
Kentucky's Republican-dominated legislature voted to impose sales taxes on services on April 2. Now, services such as landscaping, janitorial services, grooming for small pets, fitness centers, car repair and items sold by governments are subject to a six percent tax.
This affects our discounted recycle cart program. The normal purchase price for the carts is $50, plus six percent sales tax, for a total cost of $53.
Metro Council District 10 will continue to provide $25 towards the purchase of this cart. Constituents will be asked to pay the difference of $28 going forward.

The discounted recycle cart program has been re-instituted by Councilman Mulvihill and now offers two sizes: the 95-gallon carts and smaller 64 gallon carts.
The photos at left show the sizes (64 gallon on the left). |
![]() The carts normally cost $50, but Councilman Mulvihill has made them available for residents of District 10 for a reduced cost of $28. Please call 574-1110 or email us for the form.
The reduced cost recycle
carts will be available on a first come first served basis until the funds are
depleted. This offer is available to urban service district residents. |

In addition to receiving notifications, individuals can create a
Safety Profile for themselves and their household that can include any
information they want 9-1-1 and first responders to have in the event of an
emergency. When individuals make an emergency call, their Safety Profile is
automatically displayed to the 9-1-1 call taker, allowing them to send the
right responders to the right location with the right information. Information about medical history, allergies to medication, number of residents in a home and even a picture of the family dog can all be added to a Safety Profile. |
