Volunteer Description

Summary: Amazing opportunity to be a resource to those without housing. This volunteer opportunity happens the last Saturday monthly to serve and support hard-to-reach individuals and families. Monthly ACLC leads an effort to provide hundreds of individuals with a fun environment for three hours where we provide hot and cold meals, music, pictures, and resources.

Volunteer Service Duties:

▪ Event Registration & Survey Support: Volunteers will ensure that participants have read the waiver and signed the waiver agreement; distribute and collect event survey for participants; ensure volunteers sign-in and sign-out for their service.

▪ Food Service Support: Volunteers will ensure all participants are served. Volunteers will support ACLC in preparing and serving food to participants. Volunteers will ensure everyone washes their hands and receive a water.

▪ Photography Support: Volunteers will ensure pictures and short videos are taken throughout the event that later be used on social media and our website. Volunteers will support ACLC at the photobooth and ensure fun photos are taken for memories.

▪ Welcome, Kindness, Tolerance, Fellow Feeling Support: Volunteers will have empathy for the participants we serve. Volunteers will create an environment of inclusion, love, and respect. Volunteers will support ACLC in making aware to the participants that their community cares and is working to better their quality of life.

▪ Set-up & Break-down Support: Volunteers will assist with set up and break down for the event.

▪ Donation Collection Support: Volunteers will ensure that all donations are collected and stored for transport to the facility after the event. Volunteers will support ACLC and direct donors to correct staff member to collect donor information for receipt of donation. Monetary donations will be directed to the ACLC staff members identified on site as collectors.

All donations and services are appreciated and truly needed. It takes one person to initiate change however it takes a village to cause change. Thank you in advance for your service. Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) continues to expand its technician training and development programs to tackle the critical shortage of qualified automotive technicians in the U.S. The luxury automotive manufacturer, which recently became the first to establish a Registered Apprenticeship Program for veterans through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, today launched a partnership with Jefferson Community & Technical College (JCTC) in Louisville, Kentucky. Mercedes-Benz Accelerate is the latest addition to a growing number of technician education programs offered by MBUSA. Announced at a ribbon cutting ceremony that included remarks by Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin, Kentucky Secretary of Education and Workforce Development Derrick Ramsey and MBUSA Vice President of Customer Service Christian Treiber, the partnership is the first-of-its-kind in the state and an important addition to the curriculum at JCTC. “The Mercedes-Benz partnership with JCTC will help to meet a critical and immediate need for qualified, skilled automotive technicians,” said Governor Bevin

“This innovative collaboration with an iconic, world-class company is a perfect addition to the Commonwealth’s topnotch registered apprenticeship programs. High-tech, cutting-edge educational training programs such as this one are strengthening Kentucky’s workforce and positioning our citizens and businesses for sustained success.” The JCTC educational program prepares students to become a level one Mercedes-Benz Certified Systems Technician in just three semesters. Students will train on Mercedes-Benz vehicles, intern at a Mercedes-Benz dealership and have the opportunity to gain full-time employment after completing the program. “The new Mercedes-Benz and Jefferson partnership is where the rubber meets the road,” said JCTC president Dr. Ty J. Handy. “Employers in the Louisville area depend on us to grow the workforce in order to fill thousands of vacant positions. This program answers that call.” This is the most recent example of MBUSA’s efforts to elevate technician training and meet the needs of its dealerships across the nation. The company currently offers Mercedes-Benz DRIVE, which became part of the government’s National Apprenticeship System in 2017 and is the first automotive dealershipfocused training program certified by U.S. Department of Labor, Department of Veterans Affairs and National Association of State Approving Agencies. Offered to veterans and nonveterans, the technician training is available with nearly 400 seats in locations across the country including Long Beach, Calif.; Dallas, Texas; Jacksonville, Fla.; and coming in 2019, Robbinsville, N.J. MBUSA also offers an ongoing training program with Gwinnett Technical College, one of Georgia’s largest technical colleges, with plans to introduce more in the coming years. “The need for educational programs like these are important as we face an acute shortage of qualified technicians,” said Christian Treiber. “The shortage largely comes from the outdated image of mechanics and increase in demand.   A Senior and Two Freshmen All-Purpose Players Make Honor Roll In Week Two

Louisville, Ky., - September 10, 2018 - Freshman wide receiver/kick returners Terrence Horne from USF and KJ Hamler from Penn State join senior all-purpose back KaVontae Turner from TCU on the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll for week two of the college football season.

The Paul Hornung Award, now in its ninth season, is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football by the Louisville Sports Commission and football legend and Louisville native Paul Hornung. The winner and his family will be honored at the annual Paul Hornung Award dinner presented by Jewish Hospital Sports Medicine, to be held at the Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisville in March 2019. This will be The Paul Hornung Award's third year as an associate member of the National College Football Awards Association.

Red-shirt freshman KJ Hamler of Penn State touched the ball three different ways, scored rushing and receiving, and accounted for 145 all-purpose yards in the Nittany Lions' 51-6 win over Pitt at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. Hamler scored on a 32-yard run on Penn State's first possession and added a 14-yard scoring reception just before halftime as the Nittany Lions' built a 14-6 lead. Kamler also returned three kickoffs for 75 yards.

True freshman Terrence Horne of USF touched the ball three different ways and accounted for 283 yards and three touchdowns in the Bulls' 49-38 over Georgia Tech in Tampa. Horne returned back-to-back kickoffs for scores in the first quarter, the first for 98 yards and the second for 97 yards. He added a clutch, three-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter helping the Bulls mount a comeback from 10 points down. He also carried the ball twice.

Senior KaVontae Turpin of TCU accounted for 176 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns in the Horned Frog's weather-delayed, rain-soaked 42-12 win over SMU in Dallas. Turpin returned a punt 78 yards for a score in the second quarter to ignite a comeback when TCU trailed 9-0, then put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter with a 42-yard scoring catch and a 34-yard punt return that set up a touchdown. He also made a tackle when SMU intercepted a TCU pass.

The Louisville Sports Commission successfully launched the Paul Hornung Award in 2010 to honor its namesake and native son, and to promote outstanding performances by versatile college football players who often go unnoticed. 

Previous Paul Hornung Award winners by year:

• 2017: Saquon Barkley of Penn State won the award as an electrifying All-American running back who lined up at slot and wildcat quarterback, and returned kicks and punts;
• 2016: Jabrill Peppers of Michigan won the award by playing 15 different positions on defense, offense and special teams, and earning first team All-America at linebacker;
• 2015: Christian McCaffrey of Stanford won the award after breaking the NCAA record for all-purpose yards, finishing with 3,864;
• 2014: Shaq Thompson of Washington won the award as a two-way player, earning first team All-American honors at linebacker and finishing as the Husky's second-leading rusher at tailback;
• 2013: Odell Beckham Jr. of LSU won the award after finishing the season ranked second in the nation and first in the Southeastern Conference with 2,222 all-purpose yards and 185.2 average yards per game;
• 2012: Tavon Austin of West Virginia won the award as one of two players in the nation with more than 500 yards in three different categories (rushing, receiving and kick returns);
• 2011: Brandon Boykin of Georgia won the award after excelling on defense, offense and special teams; and
• 2010: Owen Marecic of Stanford won the inaugural Paul Hornung Award as a two-way starter and All Pac-10 performer at fullback and linebacker.

Texas Roadhouse signed on as presenting sponsor of the Paul Hornung Award in 2011 and will team with the Louisville Sports Commission to power fan voting again this season. Family Kite Festival to be held at Riverside, the Farnsley-Moremen Landing Sunday, September 16

The second-annual “Family Kite Festival” will take place on the grounds of the historic home and farm, located in southwest Louisville at 7410 Moorman Road. Admission to the Kite Festival is free, although concessions will be offered for sale. The first 300 children in attendance at the festival will receive a free kite. Activities include performances from the Chicago Kite Team and Pigs Aloft Stationary Kites; stilt walkers; bubble making, kite making, jugglers, children’s games and complimentary tours (donations accepted) of the Farnsley-Moremen House. The LMPD display helicopter will also be at the festival for kids to enjoy. 

“The Family Kite Festival is quickly becoming a tradition in its second year at Riverside, one of the true gems in beautiful southwest Louisville. Last year, several hundred children attended and we’re hoping to see more smiling faces on the banks of the Ohio once again this year,” said Mayor Greg Fischer.

“This is a unique event for Louisville and we hope it becomes a popular tradition for years to come,” said Seve Ghose, Director of Parks and Recreation. “It should be a lot of fun for the entire family, whether you’re an experienced kite maker or just interested in trying out something new.”

“I’m excited to have the kite festival back for a second year at the lovely Riverside, the Farnsley-Moreman Landing. This will be a great event for young and old alike. Please plan on attending this free event on September 16,” said Councilwoman Cindi Fowler, who represents District 14 in southwest Louisville.

Riverside, the Farnsley-Moremen Landing is celebrating its 25th anniversary of public ownership this year. It exists to promote, preserve, restore and interpret historic farm life on the Ohio River. Standing atop a gentle rise overlooking the Ohio River, the Farnsley-Moremen House is the centerpiece of a 300-acre historic site in Louisville, Kentucky, called Riverside, the Farnsley-Moremen Landing. Built circa 1837, the house stands as a testament to the important role agriculture along the river played in the development of our country.

Multicultural Ministry to Offer Basic Level I Spanish Classes

Level I Spanish Classes

The Office of Multicultural Ministry will offer Basic Level I Spanish Classes for persons wishing to communicate and become more involved with the Hispanic community in their parishes. There will be ten classes in total designed to prepare students to engage in basic conversational Spanish. The classes will take on Mondays, from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. starting on October 8, 2018 through December 10, 2018 at the Maloney Center, 1200 South Shelby Street, Louisville, KY 40203. The class dates are: 10/8, 10/15, 10/22, 10/29, 11/5, 11/12, 11/19, 11/26, 12/3, and 12/10/2018. A minimum of five students are necessary for the course to take place. PAY BY PLATE ALLOWS DRIVERS TO PAY TOLLS ONLINE

Drivers can pay tolls owed before receiving an invoice Drivers using the tolled bridges connecting Louisville and Southern Indiana have a new option for paying tolls. Pay by plate allows drivers who do not have a prepaid account and transponder to pay tolls owed online, before receiving an invoice.   “During our first year of tolling, we heard from many drivers who didn’t want to wait for an invoice in order to pay their tolls online,” said Megan McLain, innovative finance manager with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. “Pay by plate gives customers an option to quickly and easily pay tolls owed soon after crossing the bridges.”   Drivers can Pay by Plate in a few easy steps: Wait 3-5 days after crossing a tolled bridge for the trip to post to the system (trips for out-of-state drivers may take longer to post). Go to www.riverlink.com and click Pay Tolls. Under Pay by Plate, enter the license plate number, state and the last six digits of the vehicle identification number (VIN). View tolls owed and pay with a valid credit card, debit card or ACH.  If the trip has not yet posted, drivers can enter their preferred contact information and will be notified of transactions that post in the next 30 days. Drivers can choose to be notified by text or email by providing a cell phone number or email address.  “This is another example of listening to our customers to make the system the best it can be for all drivers using our tolled bridges,” said Scott Adams, Indiana Department of Transportation director of tolling for the Ohio River bridges. “Pay by plate offers another payment option to drivers without accounts, but they will save money if they open a prepaid account and get a transponder.”  Drivers without prepaid accounts and transponders pay higher toll rates, $4.10, $7.18 and $12.30, depending on vehicle classification. Pay-by-plate toll rates are the same as pay by mail.  To pay the lowest toll rates and save more than $2 per crossing, drivers need to set up a prepaid account and get a transponder. Accounts can be opened online, by phone or in person at a customer service center. RiverLink local transponders are free for drivers opening an account, one per registered vehicle. Transponders are mailed, free of charge, to account holders.  RiverLink is all-electronic tolling with no slowing, no stopping and no lines. First Division

Major Eric Johnson Johnson began his career in 1999 with the Louisville Division of Police (LPD). Prior to merger, he served as a patrol officer and a flex detective in the former Third and Fifth Districts. After merger, Johnson served in the Fourth Division and Metro Narcotics. In August 2005, Johnson was promoted to Sergeant and served in the First Division as a patrol and Division Detective supervisor.  In April 2013, Johnson was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Second Division.  In October 2013, Johnson became the Strategic Planning Lieutenant, where he oversaw the department's strategic plan, the Mayor’s LouieStat program, the department’s response to the President's Report on 21st Century Policing and a series of performance improvement initiatives.   After being promoted to the rank of major, Johnson commanded the Administrative Services Division. Major Johnson is a graduate of Southern High School and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville (U of L). He has received certifications in LEAN and Six Sigma. He also earned certification as a Balanced Scorecard Professional in advanced strategic planning.

Second Division

Major Ryan Bates Bates began his law enforcement career in August 1997 with the Louisville Division of Police. He served in the former Second, Fourth, and Sixth Districts. He was also a member of the Street Crimes Unit and the Gang Squad. After merger, Bates served as a patrol officer in the First Division. He was promoted to sergeant in August 2005. He served as a sergeant in the Second Division where he supervised the mid-watch platoon, FLEX Unit, and Detectives Unit. In 2012, Bates was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Fourth Division. He also served in the Second Division, where he supervised the mid-watch platoon and Division Resource Officers (DROs).   After being promoted to the rank of major, Bates commanded the Fourth Division. Major Bates served on the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team for 14 years. He served on the SWAT Team as an officer, sergeant, and lieutenant. He was appointed as the Assistant Commander in 2012 and Commander in 2015. Bates has also served on two (2) task forces which were created to address violent crime in the community. Major Bates is a graduate of Xavier University and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Business. He is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officers Course.

Fourth Division

Major Joshua Judah Major Judah has been a police officer for 16 years, joining the former Louisville Division of Police in 2001. He served as a patrol officer all across Louisville, in neighborhoods ranging from Crescent Hill, Clifton, The Highlands, Downtown, Phoenix Hill, Old Louisville, Russell, Shawnee and Portland. He served as a detective in the Crimes Against Children Unit for three years, investigating physical, sexual, and internet crimes against children across Louisville Metro. He was promoted to sergeant in 2009, where he served in the 3rd Division in southwest Louisville. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2011 and served in the Chief’s Office and the 4th Division. Major Judah was most recently the commander of LMPD’s Technical Services Unit, which encompasses all of LMPD’s technical projects. Examples of these projects include body cameras, in-car cameras, investigative software applications, in-car computers, and gunshot detection systems. Major Judah was also responsible for the Real Time Crime Center, which monitors LMPD’s nearly 200 surveillance cameras, as well as the Crime Information Center, which analyzes crime trends and provides strategic intelligence for the LMPD and its law-enforcement partners in the region. Major Judah holds a BA in History from Centre College and is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville. He was the recipient of LMPD’s Commanding Officer of the Year award in 2015. He is a graduate of the Academy of Police Supervision class 39 at Eastern Kentucky University, the 127th Session of the Southern Police Institute’s Administrative Officer’s Course at the University of Louisville, and the 263rd Session of the FBI National Academy. Major Judah lives in Louisville with his wife Katie and their daughters, Miriam and Leah.
