Labor Day Weekend in Louisville

No Garbage, Recycling or Yard Waste Pickup on Labor Day

There will be no residential garbage, recycling or yard waste collection within the Louisville Metro Urban Services District (former Louisville city limits) on Monday, September 3, in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Collection through the week will be delayed by one day beginning with the regular Monday pickups occurring on Tuesday. Garbage pickup in St. Matthews will also be delayed because of the holiday. Other District 6 residents who rely on private haulers for garbage, recycling and yard waste collection should consult those haulers about holiday collection schedules. Also, Jefferson County staffed recycling, hazardous waste and waste reduction facilities will be closed on Saturday, September 1 in recognition of the holiday and closed on Monday as usual.

Affordable family golf special offered over Labor Day Weekend

Louisville Parks and Recreation is offering an affordable family golfing package at its ten golf courses over the Labor Day Weekend.  

For only $25, a family of up to four members can play nine holes at any Parks course. The $25 includes greens and cart fees, and families can take advantage of the deal after 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 1; Sunday, September 2; and Monday, September 3. 

Families are encouraged to call in advance to book a tee time at the golf course of their choice.

Parks golf courses are open from daylight to dark seven days a week.

Old Louisville LIVE is back August 31!

The Old Louisville LIVE resumes August 31 with In Lightning, an indie rock band which will play from 8-11 pm in Central Park. 

Next are Junior J and Shania Robinson performing on Sept 7 from 8-11 pm. Junior J is the Kentucky R&B artist of the year. 

On September 15 we are hosting the Hal & Ben's Bike-In 5-10 pm. Ben Sollee will perform, as will the Louisville Leopards, and we will have a movie, Madagascar 2. 

On September 22 the Monarchs will play from 7-10 pm.

On September 28 Mondance will play from 7-10 pm.

A group of local engineers searches for new ways to save energy and stop global warming. The message of cautious hope presented in the film is just as universal: To start solving complicated environmental problems, we need to forgo quick fixes and start restoring the natural world — and people's connection to it --from the forest floor up.

Information about the JCPS/KDE Agreement

The basics of this agreement are this: 

• This is not state assistance or state management. It is a settlement agreement. (More on that below.)
• The Jefferson County Board of Education retains all local authority, as does the superintendent, with the exception of some local policy authority (explained below).
• KDE will have final say over the corrective action plan (CAP), which they already have. Even if we had gone through the hearing and been awarded state assistance, they would have had that power. In this agreement, KDE retains that authority. The CAP will be designed around the 58 specific deficiencies identified in the audit completed this spring. JCPS added a provision that the KDE will continue to provide feedback on our progress along the way.
• Two administrative positions are required under this agreement – an internal auditor and a cabinet-level ECE (special education) chief.
• KDE retains the authority to have members of the department in the district during state testing. They already have this authority and already do this every year.
• Under this agreement, Dr. Pollio may not be removed without cause before the conclusion of the 2020 audit that will occur at the end of this term.
• KDE has agreed not to audit the district until September 15, 2020; they will have to issue that audit within 90 days of commencing the audit process. At that point, the Commissioner may recommend state assistance, state management, or no action pursuant to KRS 158.785. JCPS retains its authority to appeal any recommendation at that time.
• Any local policy changes proposed by the JCPS board that would fundamentally impact the 58 items in the CAP will be sent to KDE for approval 7 days before adoption. KDE will have the authority to override any of these local policies that are directly related to the 58 items in that CAP. This is not something KDE currently has authority over.

Cultural Inclusion is Disability Cool !

This Saturday join a special--in the right way--celebration of art and culture.  DeaFestival will be partnering with WorldFest this weekend (on the Belvedere outside the Kentucky Center for the Arts).

DeaFestival is a biennial celebration of art, music, storytelling, theater and culture from the deaf and hard of hearing community.  The celebration is Saturday, September 1, 2018, 10AM-8PM.  WorldFest is a celebration of international food, music, dance and culture--one of the region's largest international festival.  It is all weekend, August 31-September 3.

KY Historical Marker Dedication Celebrates the Origins of St. James Court Art Show, Monday, Sept 3.

Kentucky Historical Marker Dedication Recognizes St. James Court Historic Preservation and the founding of the St. James Court Art Show Dedication Ceremony and Marker Unveiling To Take Place on Monday, September 3 The Kentucky Historical Society will unveil and dedicate a new historical marker on Monday, September 3, at 4 p.m. at the famed St. James Court fountain in the historic neighborhood of Old Louisville. The marker focuses on two stories, the original use of the land dating back to the 1800s, including the vision of Wm. H. Slaughter and the Victoria Land Co. to develop St. James Court, and that of it’s restoration and revitalization in the mid-1950s through the efforts of Malcolm Bird, Bob Smith, and Jim Perry, leading to the founding of the St. James Court Art Show, which grew into one of the nation’s largest under the leadership of Ann Higbie. Malcolm Bird’s nephew, Mark Bird has led the efforts over the past several years to remember and recognize the history of St. James Court and to honor a group of people who were pioneers in a movement that would later become known as “historic preservation”. Kentucky Shakespeare presents the radio drama THE WAR OF THE WORLDS in Louisville Public Media's performance studio on select nights October 10th - 28th.

This infamous radio play, adapted from the H. G. Wells novel, originally presented by Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre in 1938, terrified the nation. People believed the tale that an alien invasion was actually taking place. Kentucky Shakespeare invites audiences to join the actors, musicians, and foley artists in creating a new version of this thrilling tale.

Louisville Resilience Launches New Phase and Discovery Area Teams

Louisville Metro Government’s Office of Resilience and Community Services is inviting the public to participate in a meeting to kick off Phase II of the Louisville Resilience initiative on Monday, Sept. 10.

The meeting will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Louisville Free Public Library’s Main Branch, 301 York Street, and will include the Louisville Resilience team, business leaders, educators, non-profit organizations, members of the faith community, and residents.

Louisville was chosen in May 2016 to join the 100 Resilient Cities initiative pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation to help cities around the world become more resilient to the growing social, economic, and physical challenges in the 21st Century.  Participating cities are provided with resources that include funding to hire a Chief Resilience Officer, expert support, access to a partner platform and a peer-to-peer network.

Louisville’s Chief Resilience Officer Eric Friedlander is overseeing the city’s development and implementation of a comprehensive Resilience Strategy to help prepare for, withstand, and bounce back from chronic stresses and acute shocks.

At the Phase II kickoff, participants will divide into working groups focused around four Discovery Areas identified in Phase I by residents and subject matter experts through community meetings, focus groups, interviews and an online survey.

The areas are: compassion and trust; resilience to trauma; financial capacity and economic opportunity; and the built and natural infrastructure to promote health and well-being. The working groups will identify specific actions recommended as a part of Louisville's Resilience Strategy.  View the Phase II flyer for meeting details and other pertinent information.

"Public input has been and will continue to be the cornerstone of developing Louisville's Resilience strategy," said Friedlander.  “I'm excited to expand the number of individuals, partners and perspectives involved in this process that will help our community better address many of our biggest challenges and identify solutions.”

The Brightside Bash presented by the Republic Bank Foundation is a fun twist on a traditional gala fundraiser. The Bash features local bands, a silent auction, raffles, food, and fun! Benefit Concert Returns to Riverfront

"CQ Music Festival" to be Held at Captain's Quarters on September 15

Louisville, KY (August 29, 2018) - The 6th Annual "CQ Music Festival" will be held at Captain's Quarters Riverside Grille, located at 5700 Captain's Quarters Road in Prospect, on Saturday, September 15 from 3pm to midnight. The fundraiser will benefit WaterStep, a local organization that works to save lives around the world with safe water, and will feature performances by the Southern Sirens, Soul Circus, Radiotronic and J.D. The Southern Sirens is an all-girl, Pop/Americana band that performs originals and covers. Its members include Emmy Bodner, Kelsey Lee, and Jessica Bullock. Members include Shaun Wallace, Steve "Pop" Wallace, Mike Vest, Earl Dickerson, Tim Flowers, David Hoback, and Felipe Hernandez. Radiotronic is a local 80's dance cover band that includes band members Rachel Hagan, Jeff Epperson, Luca Bianconcini, Kevin Garvey, and Ardel Cagata. Country artist J.D. Shelburne is from Kentucky and will perform original songs from past albums, as well as his newest album "Two Lane Town."

First Division

Major Eric Johnson Johnson began his career in 1999 with the Louisville Division of Police (LPD). Prior to merger, he served as a patrol officer and a flex detective in the former Third and Fifth Districts. After merger, Johnson served in the Fourth Division and Metro Narcotics. In August 2005, Johnson was promoted to Sergeant and served in the First Division as a patrol and Division Detective supervisor.  In April 2013, Johnson was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Second Division.  In October 2013, Johnson became the Strategic Planning Lieutenant, where he oversaw the department's strategic plan, the Mayor’s LouieStat program, the department’s response to the President's Report on 21st Century Policing and a series of performance improvement initiatives.   After being promoted to the rank of major, Johnson commanded the Administrative Services Division. Major Johnson is a graduate of Southern High School and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville (U of L). He has received certifications in LEAN and Six Sigma. He also earned certification as a Balanced Scorecard Professional in advanced strategic planning.

Second Division

Major Ryan Bates Bates began his law enforcement career in August 1997 with the Louisville Division of Police. He served in the former Second, Fourth, and Sixth Districts. He was also a member of the Street Crimes Unit and the Gang Squad. After merger, Bates served as a patrol officer in the First Division. He was promoted to sergeant in August 2005. He served as a sergeant in the Second Division where he supervised the mid-watch platoon, FLEX Unit, and Detectives Unit. In 2012, Bates was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Fourth Division. He also served in the Second Division, where he supervised the mid-watch platoon and Division Resource Officers (DROs).   After being promoted to the rank of major, Bates commanded the Fourth Division. Major Bates served on the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team for 14 years. He served on the SWAT Team as an officer, sergeant, and lieutenant. He was appointed as the Assistant Commander in 2012 and Commander in 2015. Bates has also served on two (2) task forces which were created to address violent crime in the community. Major Bates is a graduate of Xavier University and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Business. He is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officers Course.

Fourth Division

Major Joshua Judah Major Judah has been a police officer for 16 years, joining the former Louisville Division of Police in 2001. He served as a patrol officer all across Louisville, in neighborhoods ranging from Crescent Hill, Clifton, The Highlands, Downtown, Phoenix Hill, Old Louisville, Russell, Shawnee and Portland. He served as a detective in the Crimes Against Children Unit for three years, investigating physical, sexual, and internet crimes against children across Louisville Metro. He was promoted to sergeant in 2009, where he served in the 3rd Division in southwest Louisville. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2011 and served in the Chief’s Office and the 4th Division. Major Judah was most recently the commander of LMPD’s Technical Services Unit, which encompasses all of LMPD’s technical projects. Examples of these projects include body cameras, in-car cameras, investigative software applications, in-car computers, and gunshot detection systems. Major Judah was also responsible for the Real Time Crime Center, which monitors LMPD’s nearly 200 surveillance cameras, as well as the Crime Information Center, which analyzes crime trends and provides strategic intelligence for the LMPD and its law-enforcement partners in the region. Major Judah holds a BA in History from Centre College and is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville. He was the recipient of LMPD’s Commanding Officer of the Year award in 2015. He is a graduate of the Academy of Police Supervision class 39 at Eastern Kentucky University, the 127th Session of the Southern Police Institute’s Administrative Officer’s Course at the University of Louisville, and the 263rd Session of the FBI National Academy. Major Judah lives in Louisville with his wife Katie and their daughters, Miriam and Leah.
