Finances and You Workshop

"Finances and You" is a six-series workshop that will give participants a wealth of knowledge from Louisville Metro Government presenters and a number of guest speakers with experience in financial education and representatives from financial institutions.

Aug 11, Back to School Event at Meyzeek Middle School, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.  

Located at 828 S. Jackson St.  Call 574-6638 for more information. Open to students kindergarten through high school.  Free backpacks with essential school supplies for the coming year will be distributed while supplies last.  Your child must be present to receive school supplies.  Smile Academy will provide free dental screenings.   Many other local community venders and agencies will be in the gym to provide information for families.  Families may complete a CAP referral during the event as well for clothing and uniform assistance.  Sponsored by Charmoli Center Neighborhood Place, Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services and area JCPS schools.

Aug 11, Back to School Festival at Thomas Jefferson Middle School, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Located at 1501 Rangeland Rd.  Call 313-4498 or 313-4700 for more information. This annual event is open to families with children in kindergarten through high school. Free backpacks and grade-appropriate school supplies (while supplies last) will be provided. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.  Free lunches will be served to kids by JCPS Nutrition Services and families may complete a CAP referral during the event as well for clothing and uniform assistance. A Community Resource Fair will include over twenty presenters including diabetes and blood pressure checks, the YMCA program, voter registration, library services and lots of fun and music.  Event sponsored in part by First Neighborhood Place, area JCPS schools and Family Resource and Youth Services Centers, and Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services.


National Night Out in District 1

District 1 gathered with LMPD for National Night Out on Tuesday August 7th at Cash Savers Market. National Night Out is a national event that seeks to unite law enforcement and the communities they serve. The night featured free food, mascots, giveaways and crime prevention tips, and block watch information.

Back to School at Southwick Community Center

On Tuesday August 7th, Southwick Community Center hosted its Back to School supply giveaway. I was in attendance and over 300 backpacks were given away filled with school supplies! The event also featured free physicals, dental exams, free haircuts and free food! Thank you Charter Communications and Ms. Call for the generous $5,000.00 donation to Southwick Community Center!

Clear the Air Workshops

Louisville's ongoing effort to reduce air pollution is the focus of a new workshop series hosted by the Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District.

The goal of "Clearing The Air" is to give the public an inside look at the APCD, everything from the science of air pollution to the laws and regulations that protect our health from harmful air.

"Clearing The Air" will consist of seven free workshops, all to be held at the Louisville Free Public Library, 301 York St.

  •  Aug. 13: Odors: Reporting and Responding
  •  Aug. 27: The APCD Regulatory Process
  •  Sept. 10: How We Monitor Air Quality
  •  Sept. 22: Technical Workshop 
  •  Sept. 24: The STAR Program/Environmental Justice

The workshops will be 5:30-7 p.m., and they are free and open to the public.

(*Exception: The Technical Workshop will be 10 a.m.-2 p.m.)

Haz Bin Expanding Hours

Haz Bin, our household hazardous waste drop-off facility, will operate on a five days a week schedule beginning Tuesday, August 14. The facility is currently open only on Wednesday and Saturday. That's three additional days per week to safely dispose of such things as batteries, gasoline, solvents and other items that may be lingering in your basement or garage. Location and new hours:

Louisville Grows Fundraiser

Louisville Grows' First Annual Fundraiser will bring a series of feature length, independently produced films and shorts together for our first Film Festival. Each film will explore questions of farmland access, rural livelihoods and the sustainability of people and place. 

Pre-screening and intermission activities will feature booths by exhibiting partners. Each ticket purchased will be eligible for door prizes from local businesses during intermission. Refreshments will be available for purchase including Apocalypse Brew Works, Heine Brothers' Coffee and Tina's Fluff and Pop. Proceeds will benefit Louisville Grows’ tree plantings, community garden grants and Healthy House programs.

Sickle Cell Anemia Events

September 8, 2018, the Sickle Cell Association of Kentuckiana (SCAK) will host the 2nd Annual Sickle Cell 'Unity' Walk.' Last years was so nice, we decided to do it twice. In partnership with the Sickle Cell Patient/Family Support Group, the sickle cell community will come together from both sides of the river at Shawnee Park to help STOMP OUT SICKLE CELL DISEASE. Build your teams and register early. T-shirts will be available on a first come, first serve basis. A flyer above has detailed information. Sponsorships are welcomed and available for a $200.00 donation. Your name and logo will be displayed on t-shirts and any other printed materials for this event. The Sickle Cell Association of Kentuckiana (SCAK) will host its 8th Annual Sickle Cell Anemia Gala on September 22, 2018, at the Galt House Waterford Room, 25th Floor, the Rivue Tower. This black-tie event will feature Bennie Smith III on Saxophone, accompanied by Alysha Ashley on vocals. There will be a plated dinner, DJ, dancing, and a silent auction. The mistress of ceremony will be none other than yours truly Chea K. Woolfolk. Tickets are $65.00 each, $120.00 per couple and $600.00 per table of 10. Come enjoy 'A Night At The Oscars.'
