Work is underway at Breslin Park (located at Lexington Road and Payne Street) for a new shade structure and skatespot. District 9 has committed $5,000 towards the shade structure; the remaining funds are being raised privately by the Louisville Parks Foundation, which needs your help.

Louisville Parks Foundation and Home Skateshop are staging a Breslin Park Fundraiser on Thursday, July 26 at 7:00 p.m. at Headliners Music Hall, 1386 Lexington Road. The all-ages show will feature Miracle Drug, The Hot Wires, Adventure, Comforter and Legs Akimbo with DJ’s Sam Sneed and Matt Anthony and Sean Cannon as emcee. Custom artwork, tee shirts and stickers designed by local pop artist, Matthew McDole, will be available for purchase. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance at http://headlinerslouisville.com/, Headliners Box Office, Home Skateshop, Guestroom Records, or at the door the night of the show. All tickets bought in person, will come with a free Matthew McDole Breslin sticker.

Plan to attend the event and show your support for the shade structure and skatespot. All artists are donating their time and the Louisville Parks Foundation will have raffle and silent auction items. Potterpalooza returns to the Main Library!

Potterpalooza

Don’t miss the summer’s biggest magical event: Potterpalooza returns for its second year on Saturday, July 28 at the Main Library, 301 York Street! Come in costume and join the fun after-hours, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m., for an evening of fun and magic. Wander through Diagon Alley, explore the newly expanded Muggle Museum, make glow-in-the-dark potions with Kentucky Science Center, fly on a broomstick, play Quidditch, enjoy sweet treats, and more.

New this year, enjoy a live performance of magically-themed music from the SMT String Quartet -- courtesy of the Imagine 2020 Concert Series and the Louisville Federation of Musicians. Adults are also invited to stop in our very own Hog's Head Pub where they can enjoy some beverages from Against the Grain Brewery (must be 21 or older to enter, ID required).

Carmichael’s Kids will be selling books and merchandise from the series, and refreshments will be available for purchase from Heine Brothers' Coffee.

MSD Expands Tunnel; Eliminates Basin at Lexington and Grinstead

MSD

The MSD Board voted this week to expand a massive underground tunnel to Lexington and Grinstead and eliminate a combined sewer overflow basin planned at the site.

The Waterway Protection Tunnel will capture combined sewer overflow points that now discharge millions of gallons of sewage and rainwater into the South Fork of Beargrass Creek and the Ohio River.

The tunnel will allow capture of 98 percent of these overflows and store the mixture until the rain subsides and sewer system capacity is available. The mixture will then be pumped back into the sewer system and conveyed to MSD's Morris Forman Water Quality Treatment Center resulting in a safer, cleaner environment and waterways for MSD’s community.

The tunnel begins just west of the central business district, at 12th and Rowan streets and was to continue east and southeast for 2.5 miles, ending near The Home of the Innocents on East Main Street. The expansion takes the tunnel further east to Lexington and Grinstead.

MSD has assured me that plans for a trailhead to the Beargrass Creek Greenway will continue despite the elimination of the basin. Watch future editions of the eNews for more information about the trailhead and the eventual reopening of the Greenway.

New Crossing Arm at St. Joe’s

csx arm

Thanks to Siemens and CSX, St. Joseph Children's Home now has a high tech railroad crossing arm at the main entrance crossing. The equipment and installation is valued at nearly $250,000 but was donated to St. Joe’s by the two companies.

CSX Press Conference - Bill Hollander

I was happy to be on site last week to help celebrate the partnership. Thank you Siemens and CSX!

Sustainability Story: Pick it Up!

trash can

Litter is more than unsightly. The debris you see on our sidewalks and streets often ends up in the sewers, Beargrass Creek and the Ohio River.

Earlier this year, we used your tax dollars to purchase and place eighteen new trash receptacles at bus stops along Frankfort Avenue.

We need your help to fill them up, and keep the Avenue and the rest of D9 green and clean.  So what can you do?

  • When you see litter, pick it up and throw it away!  Bring a bag on your walks and fill it up as you go.  You will feel better by improving your neighborhood and you might just make someone who sees you a little more responsible.
  • Make sure your trash (and that includes cigarette butts) is securely placed in the proper receptacle.
  • Carry a litterbag in your vehicle or bicycle.
  • Report at litterer to MetroCall: https://louisvilleky.gov/government/metrocall-311/services/report-litterer.  The owner of the vehicle will receive a letter saying that someone reported seeing litter being thrown from their vehicle, and reminding the owner that littering is punishable by a fine of up to $500 and/or up to a year in jail.
  • Organize a cleanup in your neighborhood. Call our office at 574-1109. We’ll be happy to help with tools and supplies.

We’d like to feature your sustainability story - a resident or business doing good things for the environment.  Riding the bus, bicycling, walking, gardening and more - our eNews will feature practices which can benefit all of us.  Send your story to Bill Hollander or Kyle Ethridge
