Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Social – July 8

The entire family is invited to enjoy a day of fun on the banks of the Ohio River as Riverside, the Farnsley-Moremen Landing hosts an “Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Social,”  Sunday, July 8 from 1-5 p.m. The historic property is located at 7410 Moorman Road in southwest Louisville.

The event features live music by Storefront Congregation, and several activities for kids, including games, miniature train rides, pony rides, a farm animal petting zoo and the Southwest Library Book Sale. Visitors will also be able to participate in an archaeological dig underway on the Riverside grounds, take tours of the circa 1837 Farnsley-Moremen House.

A highlight of the event is the Ice Cream Eating contest: ten children and six adults will be selected to compete. Contestants will vie for the “first to finish” award.

Admission to the event is free--and so are the children’s activities. Tours of the historic home are half-price for this event. Food will be provided by Ehrler’s Ice Cream, Lexie Lu’s and the Celtic Pig. Annual Community Back to School & College Fair

The Office of Multicultural Ministry will hold its 13th Annual Community Back to School Fair on Saturday, July 28, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (or until supplies run out) at the Catholic Enrichment Center, 3146 West Broadway, Louisville, KY 40211. This event is a component of the Family Life and Community Outreach and Academic Enrichment programs which minister to families regardless of race, religion or geographical location. The goal is to assist our youth with a successful start to their school year by providing them with pencils, ink pens, paper, spiral notebooks, folders, markers, crayons, colored pencils, scissors, glue, glue sticks, book bags (back packs) and other school supplies. The event and all of the supplies are free to the public. Snacks and drinks will be provided as well. We are also accepting school supply donations of any items mentioned. If you would prefer to make a monetary donation toward the purchase of supplies, we would welcome that as well. They can be dropped off at the Maloney Center located at 1200 South Shelby Street, Louisville, KY or the Catholic Enrichment Center, 3146 West Broadway, Louisville, KY. We will collect supplies through July 23,, 2018 to ensure that there is enough time to sort by grade. The College Fair component of the day will provide information for those interested in higher education. Representatives from local educational institutions will be on hand to provide information on educational opportunities. 1619 Flux: Art + Activism is excited to host community workshops to assist artist Bryan K Holden with a public art project that he is creating for the Russell Neighborhood. The artwork will represent education, inspirations & aspirations, and what the past can teach the future. The artwork will be created with keys from computer keyboards. To date, there have been approximately 2,200 keyboards donated by residents and companies from Louisville and the surrounding area. We welcome your help with removing the keys from the keyboards and organizing them, as well as sharing your ideas that will help the artist create the artwork. Fresh Stop Markets (FSM) are run by leaders in a grassroots food justice movement that operates from the belief that fresh food is a basic human right. FSMs are volunteer, community-driven farm-fresh food markets that pop up bi-weekly at local churches and community centers in fresh food insecure neighborhoods.

“Shareholders” agree to cooperate and pay ahead of time, on a sliding scale, for ten varieties of seasonal, local, organic produce that can then be picked up every other Saturday between 10 am and 12:00 noon, at Hughlett Temple AME Zion Church, 2215 W Jefferson Street. This cooperation and financial commitment ensures that farmers don’t face the same degree of risk as with traditional farmers’ markets. The sliding scale means food is affordable and everyone is included. WIC participants pay $6.25, those at or below 185% federal poverty guidelines pay $12.50, others pay $26, and those who would like to invest in the community pay $41. Payments must be received the Friday before the FSM. Everyone gets the same food! 2018 KY Cost Share Program Changes

Two years ago the Kentucky Division of Conservation and the Soil and Water Conservation Commission began reviewing and restructuring the KY Soil and Water Quality State Cost Share Program. The state cost share programs provides financial incentives in the form of a cost share for landowners to implement conservation best management practices on their land. The program has remained essentially the same since its inception in 1995, despite other partner programs and policies changing around it. The DOC and the SWCC worked with USDA Natural Resources Conservation Services staff to bring it more in line with other programs and policies and make it more efficient for conservation district field staff and NRCS technical staff to implement.

NEW PRACTICES
In recent years the program has had up to 20 individual "practices" that were eligible for applicants. The new program organized the practices into six categories with each containing NRCS Technical Specs. 

The new practices are:

• Livestock: Animal Feeding Operation BMP
• Livestock: Pastureland BMP
• Cropland BMP
• Streambank BMP
• Farmstead BMP
• Kentucky Environmental Grant

POLICY AND SCORING
The DOC and SWCC adjusted the scoring determination. Scoring is now primarily based on the practices which will be installed. This is the most accurate indicator of the natural resource concern being addressed and eliminates the reliance on subjective information as some application fields did in the past.

The cost share program is governed by 416 KAR 1:010. In order to comply with this statue, some practice limitations were amended. The Streambank Stabilization was reduced from $20,000 to $7,500 and the Winter Heavy Use Feeding Areas were reduced from $15,000 to $7,500. Applicant limitations were also reviewed and amended. In order for an applicant to receive $20,000 per program year, one of the six animal waste storage practices must be approved. If not, the applicant's limit is $7,500. For this program year each applicant is limited to one application. Each application may only have one of the practices. 

It is likely the program will have more than one cut-off date for scoring per year. This allows for a more equitable disbursement of funds and more efficient processing of applications by field staff. Applications received by a district office at any time throughout the year will be processed.

The search is on for local artists

President David James announces the first Art in City Hall Exhibition for Historic City Hall on Jefferson Street

Louisville – Completed in 1873, historic City Hall is currently home to the 26 members of the Louisville Metro Council. Very soon, it will showcase the works of local artists as President David James (D-6) announces the first Art in City Hall exhibition slated for this summer.

          “Over the years, we have come to appreciate the beauty of City Hall architecturally as we have restored its natural look and design as to preserve its history,” says James. “Now, I want to invite local artists to share their works in the public areas of this fine building to enhance the creative spirit and talent that we have in this city.”

          Art in City Hall is a joint effort between the Metro Council and Metro Government. The artworks selected will be exhibited in the entrance lobby, hallways and public spaces within City Hall.  Primary audiences will include the Metro Council representatives, staff, visiting constituents, and members of the public attending Metro Council and committee meetings.

          “City Hall is where our community gathers to advocate, debate, and make change. We are excited to work with President James and Metro Council to bring artists, and their contributions to our community dialogue, to this important public space,” said Metro Public Art Administrator Sarah Lindgren.

          Art in City Hall is an opportunity open to all artists of any race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, nationality or disability working in Louisville/Jefferson County.

Artists should submit original, two-dimensional artwork meeting the specifications outlined below. There is no entry fee. Each artist selected to exhibit their work will receive a $500 honorarium. The Art in City Hall exhibition will take place over August 2018 through August 2019.

SPECIFICATIONS

·        All artwork must be original and two-dimensional.

·        Outside dimensions of work (including frame) must not be smaller than 16 x 16 in. and must not exceed 60 x 60 in.

·        All artwork must be framed, stretched or mounted to durable material, and ready for hanging with D-ring hangers, wire, or equivalent.

·        Artists are responsible for transportation and delivery of selected artworks to City Hall by designated date and for pick up by a designated date at the conclusion of the exhibition.

Artwork will be selected by a committee consisting of Commission on Public Art, Metro Council, and Metro staff members. Up to five artists will be selected for the exhibition. Each artist will be asked to exhibit 1–5 artworks.

First Division

Major Eric Johnson Johnson began his career in 1999 with the Louisville Division of Police (LPD). Prior to merger, he served as a patrol officer and a flex detective in the former Third and Fifth Districts. After merger, Johnson served in the Fourth Division and Metro Narcotics. In August 2005, Johnson was promoted to Sergeant and served in the First Division as a patrol and Division Detective supervisor.  In April 2013, Johnson was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Second Division.  In October 2013, Johnson became the Strategic Planning Lieutenant, where he oversaw the department's strategic plan, the Mayor’s LouieStat program, the department’s response to the President's Report on 21st Century Policing and a series of performance improvement initiatives.   After being promoted to the rank of major, Johnson commanded the Administrative Services Division. Major Johnson is a graduate of Southern High School and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville (U of L). He has received certifications in LEAN and Six Sigma. He also earned certification as a Balanced Scorecard Professional in advanced strategic planning.

Second Division

Major Ryan Bates Bates began his law enforcement career in August 1997 with the Louisville Division of Police. He served in the former Second, Fourth, and Sixth Districts. He was also a member of the Street Crimes Unit and the Gang Squad. After merger, Bates served as a patrol officer in the First Division. He was promoted to sergeant in August 2005. He served as a sergeant in the Second Division where he supervised the mid-watch platoon, FLEX Unit, and Detectives Unit. In 2012, Bates was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Fourth Division. He also served in the Second Division, where he supervised the mid-watch platoon and Division Resource Officers (DROs).   After being promoted to the rank of major, Bates commanded the Fourth Division. Major Bates served on the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team for 14 years. He served on the SWAT Team as an officer, sergeant, and lieutenant. He was appointed as the Assistant Commander in 2012 and Commander in 2015. Bates has also served on two (2) task forces which were created to address violent crime in the community. Major Bates is a graduate of Xavier University and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Business. He is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officers Course.

Fourth Division

Major Joshua Judah Major Judah has been a police officer for 16 years, joining the former Louisville Division of Police in 2001. He served as a patrol officer all across Louisville, in neighborhoods ranging from Crescent Hill, Clifton, The Highlands, Downtown, Phoenix Hill, Old Louisville, Russell, Shawnee and Portland. He served as a detective in the Crimes Against Children Unit for three years, investigating physical, sexual, and internet crimes against children across Louisville Metro. He was promoted to sergeant in 2009, where he served in the 3rd Division in southwest Louisville. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2011 and served in the Chief’s Office and the 4th Division. Major Judah was most recently the commander of LMPD’s Technical Services Unit, which encompasses all of LMPD’s technical projects. Examples of these projects include body cameras, in-car cameras, investigative software applications, in-car computers, and gunshot detection systems. Major Judah was also responsible for the Real Time Crime Center, which monitors LMPD’s nearly 200 surveillance cameras, as well as the Crime Information Center, which analyzes crime trends and provides strategic intelligence for the LMPD and its law-enforcement partners in the region. Major Judah holds a BA in History from Centre College and is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville. He was the recipient of LMPD’s Commanding Officer of the Year award in 2015. He is a graduate of the Academy of Police Supervision class 39 at Eastern Kentucky University, the 127th Session of the Southern Police Institute’s Administrative Officer’s Course at the University of Louisville, and the 263rd Session of the FBI National Academy. Major Judah lives in Louisville with his wife Katie and their daughters, Miriam and Leah.
