 On Wednesday morning, council members and others who work in the building took part in an active shooter training from the LMPD SWAT team.
It included a practice drill and stop-the-bleed training.
"Like all our constituents, we want to make sure that metro government employees are kept safe. Obviously there are some threats that we have in a metro government. As legislators we make people mad all the time. But we want to make sure that we're responsive, and that we don't have innocent lives taken. And there are ways we want to make sure we minimize that by working with authorities, working with the police, the SWAT team and the fire department," said Councilman David Yates.
Yates says the group also learned information to take back to the public, including the concept of if you see something, say something, and the importance of knowing where all the exits are when at a public place.

 Wisertown Road, a major cut-through for many in our community, is undergoing a major widening project to improve the safety for both commuters and the property owners along this roadway.
Councilman David Yates secured $208,000 in Fiscal Year 2018 to see this commonly travelled road widened.
Construction began, Wednesday, May 9, 2018 and is expected to last two weeks, weather permitting.
During construction, Wisertown Road will be closed to all except those property owners living along Wisertown Road.
Please see the above signage and detour route that will be provided during the construction.
Please be as patient as possible while this necessary work is completed to make Wisertown Road safe for the thousands that travel it everyday.
 US 31W (Dixie Highway): Lane closures and sidewalk closures in place between Greenwood Road and Heaton Road (mile markers 11.7 to 14.5) due to construction for access management and bus rapid transit lines. Roadway is reduced to two lanes on northbound Dixie Highway between Greenwood Road and Blanton Lane and two lanes on southbound Dixie Highway between Heaton Road and Upper Hunters Trace.

US 31W (Dixie Highway): The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has deemed the Dixie Paving project complete, however they are providing time for their inspectors to identify areas in need of correction, add Thermoplastic markings for stop bars and turning arrows at intersections, finish traffic signal upgrades as well as ADA federally required sidewalk work, stated to not have been included in the original contract with Hall Contracting.
Once this work is deemed "complete" by the project manager, Heath Phillips, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will work through a punch list that will be given to the contractor and they will have 90 days to complete all corrective work.
Councilman Yates recently spoke with WAVE 3 regarding his concern and hope that Hall did not "rush" to have the paving completed by May 15th to avoid the $25,000 per day fine at the expense of the quality of the finished product.

 TreesLouisville is currently hosting a tree rebate. Those who purchase a shade tree can receive up to 40% off the purchase price. This is an initiative between TreesLouisville and Louisville Metro Division of Community Forestry to grow our tree canopy. Trees are more beneficial than you realize. For example, a yard tree can boost property value up to $10,000. They can also help lower heating & cooling bills. Louisville is the fastest warming urban heat island in the country; trees and shade help keep our city cool, improve air quality, and make for beautiful, safer neighborhoods.
In order to spread the word about the treebate, we would appreciate it if you could mention it in your newsletter.
Eligibility requirements include:
- Tree must be considered a shade tree
- Tree must be planted in a residential yard
- Program open to Jefferson County, KY residents only
- Max 3 submissions per household
- Tree must measure at least 1in in diameter at a point 6in above soil line
- Rebates are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis while funds are available
- Rebate is only eligible for purchase price of tree (i.e. excludes tax, planting or delivery fees, etc.)

 The Cultural Pass provides free access to many of Greater
Louisville’s arts and cultural institutions for children of Metro
Louisville. The Pass is valid for one-time general admission at each of
the participating institutions and is valid from June 1 to August 11.
Created from Vision Louisville, the Cultural Pass is an innovative initiative
to promote art and culture and improve summer learning in our community. Nearly
200,000 passes have been issued since its inception in 2014.
The Vision of the Cultural Pass:
A
Cultural Pass for children of all ages that supports and encourages life-long
learning by providing access to Louisville’s art and cultural institutions.
Key Objectives:
1. Impact
summer learning loss by creating a learning experience through programming,
activities, and education.
2. Establish
a life-long relationship between Louisville’s children and the art and cultural
institutions.
3. Work
to address barriers that may prohibit children from accessing the city’s art
and cultural venues.
The
2018 Cultural Pass is daily managed by the Fund for the Arts.
The 2018 Cultural Pass is available starting June 1, 2018
and may be picked up at any Louisville Free Public Library branch along with
the Summer Reading Program. Pass holders can register and track the
progress of your Cultural Pass online at www.lfpl.org/culturalpass.
The official Cultural Pass Launch Day will be on June 9
at the Main Branch of the Louisville Free Public Library and all participating
venues will be invited to participate. Pass holders are encouraged to
visit as many venues as you are able. Pass holders that visit the most
venues will be entered into a drawing for tickets, season passes and other prizes
provided by members of the Arts and Culture Alliance.
