Next Friday, we’ll be celebrating the 13th anniversary of Louisville’s Bike to Work Day with Bike Together Day! The event is Friday, May 18 and includes Meet and Rides from local parks including Seneca, Shawnee, Iroquois, George Rogers Clark, and the Big Four Bridge. Each ride has a Ride Captain and a set departure time, and attendees are encouraged to register. I’m registered to ride from the basketball courts at Seneca Park, leaving at about 7:15 am.
Those who register will receive a free Guy Fieri’s Smokehouse breakfast sandwich and Heine Bros coffee when they reach the destination at Fourth Street Live around 8am. Riders are encouraged to return midday for the public lunchtime celebration where one lucky winner will receive a brand new commuter bike from Parkside Bikes, and one youth will receive a brand new bike donated by GE. Vendors will promote health and wellness initiatives, charity bike rides, and more.

The award-winning St. Matthews Farmers Market opens Saturday for its 12th season. The market is located at Beargrass Christian Church, 4100 Shelbyville Road. It runs from 8:00 am to Noon every Saturday from May 12 through September 29.
Opening Day features the market’s farms and friends plus special guests Tim Laird, America's CEO Chief Entertaining Officer, and Dan Dry with their new book with Chef David Danielson of Churchill Downs, the Bourbon Country Cookbook: New Southern Entertaining. Edible Louisville will be on hand to share current and past issues of the magazine.

What an honor for nationally-recognized artist and D9 resident Lynn Dunbar, who was selected by Churchill Downs as the artist for the 144th Kentucky Derby. It was great to see her, along with her husband Tony Bayus, signing posters at Churchill Downs on Oaks Day.

MSD would like to alert neighbors of a road closure from May 21 – August 7, 2018. The intersections of Lexington Road and Baxter Avenue, as well as a portion of Lexington Road and Hamilton Avenue, will be closed for construction of a new sewer line. Local access and alternative routes will be available.
The above map shows the section in orange being closed, May 21 to August 7. The intersection of Lexington Road and Baxter Avenue, shown in red, will be closed from May 29 to August 7.
The construction is to install a new sanitary sewer line that will connect to the Waterway Protection Tunnel. The new line will capture nine sewer overflow points that currently discharge to Beargrass Creek. The Waterway Protection Tunnel will prevent millions of gallons of sewage from entering Beargrass Creek and the Ohio River. During excessive rainfall, the tunnel will store sewage and storm water for treatment until system capacity is available.

Recently I was interviewed by MetroTV about the new Louisville Metro Homeless Protection Ordinance and Homeless Encampment Task Force.
The ordinance, which I sponsored, provides for a 21-day notice period before the belongings of homeless individuals can be removed from Metro property. The task force is bringing together Metro officials and homeless service provides to discuss best practices for helping our homeless neighbors.

From June 11 through August 3, Louisville Parks and Recreation is offering summer camps at six of its twelve community centers. Registration is now available for all Community Center camp locations.
Camps run Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (early bird drop-off hours are available at some locations; please contact site for more details). For more information, such as registration times and documentation needed for registering campers, please contact the camp site of your choice listed below.

This year’s camp theme, “Amazing Adventures”, reflects an array of daily on-site programs focusing on fitness, the arts, the environment and education. Camp programs are designed for all children in the community between the ages of 6-12.
