On Thursday, February 22nd the Metro Council’s Community Affairs and Housing Committee held a special meeting to honor outstanding residents and volunteers as part of its 16th Annual Black History Month Program.
Dwight M. Mitchell is a graduate of the Atherton High School Class of 1979, Dwight Mitchell has gone
on to become one of the most recognizable faces in the Louisville Metro Area. He is currently a retired officer on the staff
of the Louisville Metro Police Department Media and Public Information Office. After
graduating from high school, Mitchell went on to attend the University of
Louisville and in October of 1984, he was hired on as a police officer for the former
Jefferson County Police Department. Mitchell served six years as a patrol officer in the Adam
District, located in eastern Jefferson County. In 1990, he moved on to
Community Services where he became one of the original D.A.R.E (Drug Awareness
and Resistance Education) Officers where he educated over 10,000 students on
the harmful effects of drug and substance abuse through out the area. Mitchell
was later assigned to Baker District on Outer Loop where he became a Life Skills
Officer, where he continued work with children in both the public and parochial
schools.
In
2002, Mitchell was assigned to the Chief’s Office where he began his work as a
Public Information Officer. Upon retirement from being a sworn officer, Mitchell
returned to his instructive roots and began to educate local citizens about
community safety through the Citizen’s Police Academy. He also found his place
teaching children once more as an instructor at Safety City where second grade
students learned about the importance of traffic safety. In 2009, Mitchell returned to his position as
a Public Information Officer for the Louisville Metro Police Department where
he currently serves today.
He
is a graduate of Atherton High School, and attended the University Of
Louisville.
Dwight
Mitchell is married to the former Deborah Yates and has three sons, a daughter,
and 5 grandchildren. He is also an active member at St. Stephen Baptist Church
where he serves as a deacon.

 Louisville Metro Council Health and Education Committee invite the
community to attend one of three town hall meetings on the topic of legalizing
the use of marijuana for medical purposes.
Each town hall meeting will be held
in a different part of the community, with the first town hall starting Monday,
February 19 at 6:00pm. Each town hall will start with presentations by
panelists both in support and opposition to a resolution calling for the
legalization of medical marijuana which is currently being considered by the
Louisville Metro Council.
Persons attending the town hall meeting will have the
opportunity to ask questions of panelists following opening remarks. Each town
hall is expected to last 60-90 minutes and comments received during each event
will be given to all members of the Louisville Metro Council.

- Monday, February 26, 6:00PM – Louisville Fire Fighters Hall (400 Bakers Lane)

& Passport Health Plan Spring Community-Wide Cleanup is
open!!

The
cleanup will take place on Saturday, April 14th with the suggested cleanup
times of 8:00am – 12:00pm. (If the date we have set doesn't work for your
group, that's OK, we will support any cleanup that takes place in the weeks
surrounding April 14th.)
All
cleanup teams will receive bags and gloves at no cost, and the first 5,000
volunteers to register will also receive a free t-shirt. Brightside welcomes
groups of all sizes, big and small and if you're not sure where you would
like to hold your cleanup we can help with that too, just give us a call or
send us an email and we will be happy to make a suggestion.
Supply
pick up will be held on Sunday, April 8th at the Iroquois Park Amphitheater,
1080 Amphitheater Rd, 40214 from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm.
All
supplies are pre-packaged by group for team leaders to collect. If a group
fails to pick up their supplies on April 8, and they have t-shirts, the
t-shirts go to other volunteers on a first come, first served basis. Groups
who do not have t-shirts can call Brightside on Tuesday, April 10th to see if
any t-shirts have been returned.
Brightside
is proud to be holding our Cleanup with the Give A Day - Mayor's Week of
Service for the fifth year. Cleanups are an integral part of
Brightside's mission and without the help of your volunteer group, and many
other volunteers throughout the year, we could not achieve our goals of a
cleaner, greener and more sustainable Louisville.

 Regular yard waste
collection in the Urban Services District of Louisville is on seasonal shutdown
until March 12. But you may request a special pickup if the stuff is piling up
in the interim.
Just call MetroCall at 311 or 574-5000.
Those calls will
be handled on an as needed basis rather than running crews full-time on routes
across the city at a time when volumes are generally very low.

- The new completion date for the project is May 15, 2018.
2. Whom is responsible for overseeing the Dixie Highway Paving Project?
- The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the State Government's agency charged with building and maintaining federal highways and Kentucky state highways is charged with overseeing the construction of the Dixie Paving Project.
3. Whom is the contractor charged with the infrastructure repair and repaving of Dixie Highway?
- Hall Contracting of Kentucky, Inc. was awarded this contract in the amount of $14.5 million from the State.
4. Will the contractor be penalized for not completing all work by the completion date?
- If the project continues beyond the May 15, 2018 deadline the contractor will be assessed a fine of $25,000 per day.
