America Reads for Black History Month at Brandeis Elementary

Per aspera ad astra

Last Friday, President James read the Story of Barack Obama to students from Brandeis Elementary. Black History Month reminds us of the countless barriers black Americans have faced throughout the nation's past, but also the courage and perseverance that in breaking them. Barack Obama gave our nation hope - if he could win the highest office in the land, what barrier could hold us back? But the struggle isn't over. There is so far yet to go, and it's the students at Brandeis and children like them - the future scientists, poets, artists, and yes, presidents - that, Lord willing, will take us there.

Learning for a Healthier Life at St. Ann's Healthy Families Class

Stuff

President James was honoured to attend a meeting of the St. Ann's Healthy Families class. This class, with 15 or more participants, has met for over 21 years, with the sponsorship of Dismas Charities. It meets weekly, 5:30 to 7 pm on Thursdays except holidays, Derby week, and 2 weeks at Christmas time.  Participants make goals and work on achieving those goals (that involve personal, family, career, and community goals) to be eligible for class participation and incentives.  In the past 21 years, they've celebrated college and other school graduations, and family and career goal achievements, forming a sisterhood. We're proud of all this class and its members have done to build strong families and communities, and we're looking forward to all they'll accomplish in the years to come.
