First Ever "Light Up California" set for Saturday, December 23rd

The historic California Neighborhood in West Louisville will kick-start the holiday season with its first ever “Light-up California” event next Saturday, December 3rd from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.  Sixth District Metro Councilman David James will welcome Santa Claus, city leaders, and neighborhood residents to California Leisure Park (located at the corner of Dixie Highway and West Kentucky Street) for an evening of festivities.

“Light-up California will be a great opportunity for residents of the California Neighborhood to come together for a fun evening in the heart of their community.  I look forward to starting this new tradition with our friends in California on Saturday, December 3rd.”

The evening’s entertainment will include live musical performances by the choir of First Gethsemane Baptist Church and the River City Drum Corps.  In addition to holiday tunes, free snacks and refreshments such as cookies and hot cider will be available to all those who attend.

Also, LG&E has partnered with Councilman James by donating 250 energy efficient light bulbs to be given out at the event and throughout the holiday season in an effort to promote safety through increased visibility in the neighborhood.  LMPD’s 2nd Division police officers have also agreed to turn their blue lights on during the evening hours in alleys in the neighborhood.  “Public safety is the number one responsibility of Metro Government to our citizens.  I’m appreciative to LMPD and LG&E for their assistance in keeping our neighborhood safe.”

Public forums give District 6 residents a voice in selecting next LMPD Chief

The recent confirmation of three (3) public forums over the next few weeks means residents across the Sixth Council District will have a chance to voice their priorities and concerns as the city begins its search for the next Chief of Louisville Metro Police.

The first of these forums is being held on December 1st at the NIA Center at 6:00pm. Councilman James will be joined by the Council members of Districts 1, 3, 4, and 5 at this meeting, where they will hear from residents on what they would like to see as the process gets underway.

“My fellow Council members and I are reaching out to the residents of our districts and all of West Louisville to help provide Mayor Fischer with input on what to look for when selecting the person who will be charged with the critical task of keeping our communities safe,” says Councilman David James (D-6).

Councilman James has also scheduled two additional public forums to take place in the Sixth District over coming weeks, which will be held on December 7th at 6:00pm at the South Louisville Community Center (2911 Taylor Boulevard) and December 17th at 10:00am at the Old Louisville Information Center in Central Park (1340 South Fourth Street).

“There is no doubt that LMPD’s next police chief will have a major impact on how public safety decisions are made throughout the city so I want to make sure that the perspectives of the taxpayers play an integral part of Mayor Fischer’s decision process. These forums will help ensure that the voices of those from the Sixth District are heard and that the best possible police chief candidate is ultimately selected,” added James.

Each one of these meetings will be open to the public. Please contact Councilman James’ office at 574-1106 with any questions or concerns.
